About Washington Place

Washington Place in Honolulu, Hawaii, is a historic landmark with deep ties to the Hawaiian monarchy and state governance. Built in 1847, this elegant Greek Revival-style mansion was originally the home of Queen Liliʻuokalani, Hawaii’s last reigning monarch. She resided here before being overthrown in 1893 and later placed under house arrest within its walls.

In 1918, Washington Place became the official residence of Hawaii’s territorial and later state governors, serving in this capacity until 2002. Today, it operates as a museum and an event space, offering guided tours that highlight its royal history, political significance, and architectural beauty.

Visitors can explore its beautifully preserved rooms, lush gardens, and exhibits showcasing Hawaiian heritage. Listed as a National Historic Landmark, Washington Place stands as a testament to Hawaii’s past, blending monarchy, governance, and culture in one of Honolulu’s most treasured sites.
