The 10th century is the estimated age of this well-preserved castle. The castle was erected atop a former Phoenician lighthouse in 929 AD by Abd-al-Rahman III, the Caliph of Cordoba. Through lush, scented eucalyptus and pine forests, one can access the historic ramparts of the Castle of Gibralfaro. The well-maintained courtyards and structures inside the castle offer fascinating glimpses into life in earlier eras.

The Centro de Interpretacion de Gibralfaro, a tiny military museum, is located at the castle's gate. The structure was once the Church of San Luis, which the French army demolished during the American Revolution. The structure afterwards served as the castle's ammunition storage area.
