Japan Holiday Packages from Mumbai

Reviewed by Thrillophilia Japan Operations Team

Updated as of May 2026

Thrillophilia’s Japan tour packages from Mumbai start at INR 1,49,600 per person for a 7-day trip, covering key inclusions such as hotel stays, daily breakfast, airport transfers, guided sightseeing, and visa assistance. What feels like a distant international plan is actually just an 8 to 9 hour direct flight away from Mumbai, taking you from a fast-paced city environment to a country known for its calm, precision, and cultural depth. With strong flight connectivity and well-structured itineraries, Japan is far more accessible than most first-time travellers expect.

All you need is about 6 to 9 days for a well-planned Japan trip. From walking through centuries-old temples in Kyoto to experiencing the fast-moving, neon-lit streets of Tokyo, every part of the journey feels new and different. What makes Japan stand out is how seamlessly it blends tradition with modern life. Our destination experts with a record of completing 6,500 successful Japan trips in 2025 understand the pace, routes, and expectations that work best for first-time travellers from Mumbai. With multiple itinerary options, each trip is designed around your travel style, whether you prefer a relaxed pace or a more experience-driven route.

Most travellers from Mumbai choose a 6 to 9-day itinerary covering Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, sometimes adding Mount Fuji viewpoints like Hakone or Kawaguchiko. Based on our experience managing Japan trips, simpler routes tend to work better for first-time visitors. Trying to cover too many cities in a short duration often takes away from the experience. A more focused plan with fewer destinations and more time in each place allows you to understand Japan at a comfortable pace, which is where the trip truly comes together.

Why Should You Choose Japan as Your First International Destination

Japan is one of the few countries where first-time international travellers feel both excited and secure at the same time. It consistently ranks among the safest countries in the world, holding the twelfth position globally and second in Asia as per the Global Peace Index 2025. This directly impacts your travel experience, from walking in cities late at night to navigating public transport with confidence.

What makes Japan especially suitable for first-time travellers is how well the country is organised. Public systems run on time, cities are clean, and information is easily accessible even for non-Japanese speakers. This reduces the usual stress associated with international travel and allows you to focus more on the experience.

Japan also rewards travellers who prefer structured yet meaningful travel. Unlike destinations where itineraries can feel rushed, Japan encourages a more paced approach. Cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka are well-connected and offer enough depth to explore without constantly moving. This makes it easier for first-time travellers to settle into the journey rather than feeling overwhelmed.

Another important factor is reliability. Japan’s rail network is among the most punctual in the world, and its hospitality standards are consistently high. Tokyo has remained the city with the highest number of Michelin-starred restaurants globally for over a decade, which reflects the country’s commitment to quality and consistency.

Japan Trip Cost From Mumbai: Realistic 2026 Budget Guide

Japan is not a budget destination by Southeast Asia standards. However, compared to Europe or the US, it offers excellent value for the quality of experience. Here is a realistic breakdown for Mumbai travellers.

Land-Only Package Costs:

  • 6-night Tokyo and Kyoto route: Starting at INR 1,49,600 per adult
  • 7-night Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka classic route: INR 1,60,000 to INR 1,90,000 per adult
  • 9-night route with Hakone: INR 1,85,000 to INR 2,20,000 per adult
  • 10-night premium route including Hiroshima: INR 2,20,000 to INR 2,80,000 per adult

Flight Costs (Round-Trip, Mumbai to Tokyo):

  • Economy class: INR 65,000 to INR 1,10,000 per person
  • Business class: INR 2,50,000 to INR 4,00,000 per person
  • Best booking window: 60 to 90 days before travel for economy, 45 to 60 days for business

What Drives the Cost:

  • Sakura season (late March to April) and autumn season (October to November) carry 20 to 40 per cent price premiums on hotels.
  • JR Pass for 7 days costs approximately INR 26,000 to INR 30,000. It makes financial sense for routes using multiple Shinkansen journeys.
  • Hotel zone significantly impacts cost. Central Tokyo hotels can range from INR 8,000 to INR 25,000 per night, depending on star rating.
  • Theme parks like Universal Studios Japan or Tokyo DisneySea add approximately INR 5,000 to INR 8,000 per person per day.

Currency Note: Japan's official currency is the Japanese Yen (JPY). As of May 2026, 1 JPY is approximately INR 0.57, meaning 10,000 JPY is approximately INR 5,700. Japan remains a partially cash-dependent country, especially at smaller restaurants, temples, and local markets. Always carry some cash alongside your card.

Japan Visa for Indian Travellers

Japan does not offer visa-free entry to Indian passport holders. You need to apply for a Japan tourist visa before travelling. Here is the current process based on the Embassy of Japan in India guidelines as of May 2026.

  • Application method: Through VFS Global Japan Visa Application Centres across India
  • eVISA for India: Japan started accepting eVISA applications from India on April 1, 2024
  • Visa fee: INR 500 for a single-entry or multiple-entry tourist visa, plus VFS service charges (as of April 1, 2026, Embassy of Japan in India)
  • Processing time: Generally 5 working days from the date of submission. During peak travel season, timelines may increase
  • Application window: Applications are accepted up to 3 months before your travel date

Important note: A Japan visa does not guarantee entry. Immigration approval is at the discretion of border authorities as per the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan.

Thrillophilia provides document guidance and visa support as part of Japan packages. Keep at least 10 working days as a buffer between your visa application and travel date to avoid last-minute stress.

Flights to Japan From Mumbai: What You Should Know in 2026

This is where Mumbai stands out compared to most other Indian cities for Japan travel. As of May 2026, ANA operates a direct Mumbai to Tokyo Narita (BOM to NRT) route, which currently makes Mumbai one of the few Indian cities with non-stop Japan access. Air India is scheduled to begin a direct Mumbai to Tokyo Haneda (BOM to HND) route starting June 15, 2026, which will be significant because Haneda sits closer to central Tokyo and reduces transfer time considerably.

Direct Flights: Mumbai to Tokyo Narita

  • Duration: approximately 8 hours
  • Operating airline: ANA (All Nippon Airways)
  • Arrival airport: Tokyo Narita (NRT), approximately 60 to 90 minutes from central Tokyo
  • Round-trip fares: approximately INR 65,000 to INR 1,10,000 per person, depending on season and booking window

Upcoming: Mumbai to Tokyo Haneda (from June 15, 2026)

  • Operating airline: Air India
  • Arrival airport: Tokyo Haneda (HND), approximately 30 to 45 minutes from central Tokyo
  • This route, once active, will be especially useful for travellers looking for a tighter city arrival

There are currently no direct flights from Mumbai to Osaka. If your itinerary is Osaka-first, plan for a connecting flight via Bangkok, Singapore, or Hong Kong, or consider entering through Tokyo and taking the Shinkansen to Osaka, which is a scenic and practical option on most Japan itineraries.

Top Experiences Worth Prioritising on Your Japan Trip From Mumbai

Japan has a reputation for everything being worth doing. That's partly true, but it also leads to overcrowded itineraries. Here are the experiences our Mumbai travellers consistently rate the highest.

Onsen (Hot Spring Bathing): An onsen stay, ideally in Hakone or Beppu, is one of the most uniquely Japanese experiences you can have. Most ryokans come with a private or communal onsen. Note that many onsen do not allow guests with tattoos.

Fushimi Inari Shrine (Kyoto): Over 10,000 torii gates winding through a forested mountain. Go early morning, ideally before 7 AM, to avoid crowds. This is free to enter and visually unlike anything else in the world.

Shibuya Crossing (Tokyo): The world's busiest pedestrian intersection processes over 3,000 people per crossing cycle at peak hours. Watch from the Starbucks on the upper floor for the best view, or simply walk through it.

Tsukiji Outer Market (Tokyo): Even though the inner wholesale market moved to Toyosu, the outer market at Tsukiji remains one of the best food walks in Tokyo. Arrive by 8 AM for the freshest options.

Arashiyama Bamboo Grove (Kyoto): Dense bamboo forest with a distinctive rustling sound that you will not forget. Combine this with the nearby Tenryu-ji garden and the river area.

Mount Fuji Viewpoints (Hakone and Kawaguchiko): Mount Fuji is not a casual trek. The climbing season is July and August only, and it is a strenuous overnight climb. For most travellers, the best approach is to stay in Hakone or Kawaguchiko and view the mountain from a ryokan or Lake Kawaguchi. Weather clouds the peak frequently, so an overnight stay dramatically increases your chance of a clear view.

Best Time to Visit Japan From Mumbai

Japan has four distinct seasons, and each one changes how the country looks, feels, and costs. Here is an honest month-by-month guide for Mumbai travellers.

Late March to April (Sakura Season)

This is when Japan gets busiest and most expensive. Cherry blossom timing is not a fixed national date. It varies by city, elevation, and year. Tokyo usually sees peak bloom around late March to early April, while Kyoto follows a few days later. Prices for hotels and flights can rise by 30 to 50 per cent compared to the shoulder season. If you want to see sakura, book at least 4 to 5 months in advance and expect to pay a premium.

May (Shoulder Season, Highly Recommended)

May is one of the best months for Japan travel. The weather is warm and clear, crowds have thinned out after April, and prices come back to a normal range. This is the window many experienced travellers prefer.

September to November (Autumn Foliage Season)

This is arguably the second-best travel window for Japan. Autumn colours, particularly in Nikko, Kyoto, and Hakone, are stunning. September can still carry typhoon risk, so October and November are the more reliable months. Hotel and flight prices are high but slightly more predictable than the sakura season.

December to February (Winter)

Good for onsen trips, Hokkaido snow experiences, and fewer crowds at major temples. Tokyo and Kyoto in winter are cold but manageable. Not ideal for first-timers who want outdoor scenery, but excellent for those who love winter aesthetics.

June to August (Summer)

Hot, humid, and occasionally affected by typhoons from late summer. July and August are popular for families during school holidays and for festival season, including the Gion Matsuri in Kyoto, which is one of Japan's largest traditional festivals. Budget travellers often find lower hotel prices in June before the peak summer heat hits.

Where to Stay in Japan: Hotel Zone Planning Matters

In Japan, hotel location is not a minor detail. It directly affects how much time you spend commuting versus experiencing the city. Staying near a major train station in Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka can save 30 to 60 minutes per day in transit. Here is what Mumbai travellers need to know.

Tokyo: Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Asakusa are the most practical bases. Shinjuku is the rail hub of Tokyo and gives you easy access to almost every part of the city. Avoid hotels far from train stations, even if they seem cheaper.

Kyoto: Stay near Kyoto Station for maximum convenience. The station connects directly to Shinkansen lines, the city's bus network, and major attractions.

Osaka: Namba and Umeda are the two main hotel zones. Namba is walkable to Dotonbori and better for food-forward travellers. Umeda is closer to the Shinkansen terminal and suits business or premium travellers.

Hakone: If you are adding Hakone for Mount Fuji views, consider an overnight stay at a ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) with an onsen. This is one of the most memorable experiences Japan offers.

Food Planning for Indian Travellers in Japan

This is a question that comes up in almost every consultation with Mumbai travellers. Japan's food culture is extraordinary, but it is built heavily around fish, seafood, pork, and other non-vegetarian ingredients. Here is what to expect.

  • Vegetarians: Japan is challenging but manageable for vegetarians. Shojin ryori (Buddhist temple cuisine) is entirely plant-based and available near temples in Kyoto. Indian restaurants are available in Tokyo's Shinjuku and Asakusa areas.
  • Jain travellers: More difficult. Most Japanese dishes use dashi broth made from fish or seaweed. Inform your hotel in advance, and Thrillophilia can help pre-arrange Jain-friendly meals where possible.
  • Non-vegetarians: Japan is outstanding for non-vegetarians. Ramen, sushi, tempura, yakitori, and wagyu beef are among the best food experiences in the world.
  • Halal food: Available in select areas of Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. The Halal Gourmet Japan website lists certified restaurants by city.

Shinkansen, City Transit, and Practical Travel Tips

Japan's rail system is often called the world's best, and it genuinely earns that title. The Shinkansen (bullet train) connects Tokyo to Kyoto in approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes, and Tokyo to Osaka in about 2 hours and 30 minutes. Here is what Mumbai travellers should know before they arrive.

  • JR Pass: A 7-day JR Pass costs approximately INR 26,000 to INR 30,000 and covers most Shinkansen and JR trains. It is worth it if your route covers Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, and Osaka. Buy the JR Pass before you leave India, as it is cheaper and easier to exchange.
  • IC Card (Suica or Pasmo): Load money onto an IC card for local metro, bus, and convenience store purchases. This saves queuing time at ticket machines.
  • Luggage forwarding: Services like Yamato Transport allow you to send your luggage between hotels for approximately 1,500 to 2,500 JPY (approximately INR 855 to INR 1,425) per bag. This is particularly useful if you are moving from Tokyo to Kyoto by Shinkansen and want to travel light.
  • Cash and cards: Always carry some Japanese Yen (JPY) in cash. Japan has many cash-only establishments. International ATMs are available at Japan Post offices and 7-Eleven convenience stores across the country.
  • Pocket Wi-Fi or SIM card: Rent a pocket Wi-Fi device at the airport or purchase a tourist SIM. Connectivity is essential for navigating public transport on Google Maps.

We covered Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, and each place offered something different. Tokyo was exciting and full of energy, Kyoto was calm and beautiful, and Osaka was fun for the whole family. Japan in cherry blossom season from Mumbai, this was on our list for five years and Thrillophilia nailed the timing perfectly. Ueno Park picnic under the sakura trees, Arashiyama bamboo forest at dawn, Fushimi Inari shrine at sunset, Osaka Dotonbori street food at midnight — each day had its own magic. The bullet train itself was an experience. Everything was pre-planned so we never wasted a moment.

Yes, with the right route. Families with children tend to enjoy Tokyo's variety, theme parks like Tokyo DisneySea or Universal Studios Japan in Osaka, and the ease of getting around on the rail network. Keep the city count low for families with younger children.

Can I get vegetarian food in Japan?

It is possible but requires planning. Shojin ryori (Buddhist cuisine) in Kyoto is fully plant-based. Indian restaurants are available in Tokyo. Strict vegetarians and Jain travellers should inform Thrillophilia at the time of booking for pre-arranged meal options.

Is Osaka direct from Mumbai?

No. There are currently no direct flights from Mumbai to Osaka (KIX) as of April 2026. Osaka is best accessed from Tokyo by Shinkansen, which takes approximately 2.5 hours and is one of the highlights of any Japan itinerary.

Is a JR Pass worth buying for a Japan trip from Mumbai?

If your route covers Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka with a Shinkansen, a 7-day JR Pass (approximately INR 26,000 to INR 30,000) is generally worth it. For short routes or trips that stay mostly in Tokyo, point-to-point tickets may be cheaper.

What is the best season to visit Japan from Mumbai?

Late March to April for cherry blossoms, May for pleasant weather without peak crowds, and October to November for autumn foliage. May and November are considered the best value-for-experience windows by our Mumbai travelers.

Is the sakura season too expensive for a first visit?

Sakura season is beautiful but comes with 20 to 40 per cent price premiums on hotels and significant crowd pressure at popular spots. For first timers on a budget, May is a wiser choice as the weather is still excellent and costs are more reasonable.

Should I add Hiroshima to my first Japan trip?

Only if your trip is 9 nights or longer. Hiroshima and Miyajima Island add a deeply meaningful layer to any Japan trip, but they require at least a dedicated overnight or two-day detour from the Osaka-Kyoto base. Do not add Hiroshima to a 7-night trip.
