Japan had been on Dinesh and Mary’s travel list, and their seven-day holiday gave them a little bit of everything they could have hoped for. Their journey moved from Tokyo’s busy streets to the mountain landscapes around Mount Fuji, then into the traditional streets of Kyoto before ending with the energy of Osaka. Along the way came autumn colours, ancient temples, peaceful gardens, neon-lit neighbourhoods and plenty of those distinctly Japanese moments that are hard to recreate anywhere else.
The First Taste of Tokyo
Their first evening was a gentle introduction to Tokyo. After settling into their hotel, Dinesh and Mary headed towards Shinjuku, where the city immediately showed them its famous mix of old and new. Golden Gai was tucked away among the towering buildings, with tiny bars and narrow lanes giving them a glimpse of a much more intimate side of the city. A visit to Shinjuku Gyoen brought an entirely different atmosphere, especially with the autumn colours adding shades of red, orange and yellow to the gardens.
The following day gave them a proper introduction to Tokyo's landmarks. They saw Tokyo Tower from Zojoji Temple, crossed the famous Shibuya Crossing and walked through the peaceful grounds of Meiji Jingu. Their route then moved through Omotesando and towards the Imperial Palace before getting more colourful in Akihabara. The neighbourhood's anime stores, gaming arcades and enormous electronic shops brought out Tokyo's pop-culture side, while Sensoji Temple and Nakamise Street brought them back to the city's older traditions.
When Mount Fuji Took Centre Stage
Mount Fuji was the kind of sight that could easily become the highlight of an entire Japan holiday. Dinesh and Mary got their first memorable view from Arakurayama Sengen Park, where the famous Chureito Pagoda rises above the hillside with Mount Fuji stretching out behind it. In late November, the surrounding trees added beautiful autumn colours to the scene, making the view feel even more dramatic.
Their Fuji experience continued at the Fuji Sengen Shrine and Lake Kawaguchi. A boat ride across the lake gave them time to take in the mountain from a completely different angle, with the calm water and surrounding landscape creating a peaceful setting. Later, they travelled up to Mount Fuji's 5th Station, reaching around 2,300 metres above sea level. From the mountain road to the views around the station, the entire day felt like one long Fuji postcard brought to life.
A Day Surrounded by Autumn Beauty
The journey towards Kyoto gave Dinesh and Mary another chance to see Japan away from its major cities. At Iyashi no Sato Nenba, they walked through a traditional village where thatched-roof houses sat against the surrounding mountains. The setting felt wonderfully old-fashioned, with wooden architecture, quiet lanes and autumn foliage creating a very different picture of Japan from the bright streets of Tokyo.
Shiraito Falls added another beautiful stop to the day. Instead of one powerful stream, water spread across the cliff face in delicate white curtains, surrounded by greenery and rock. It was a peaceful place to pause before they visited the Toyota Museum, where the focus shifted from traditional Japan to the country's long history of automotive innovation. In a single day, they experienced three very different pieces of Japanese life.
Walking Through Old Japan
Kyoto brought some of the most recognisable cultural experiences of their trip. They explored Arashiyama, where tall bamboo stalks rose on either side of the pathways and filtered the daylight above them. A walk across Togetsukyo Bridge and a visit to Tenryuji Temple followed, with traditional gardens and architecture providing a quieter setting.
Fushimi Inari offered another unforgettable scene. Thousands of bright red torii gates created a winding path through the forest, with each section revealing another stretch of the famous tunnel. Later, Kinkakuji's golden exterior reflected across its surrounding pond, while Kyoto Imperial Palace offered another glimpse into the city's royal history. Their evening around Gion brought the day to a slower close, with traditional streets, Yasaka Shrine and Kenninji Temple adding to Kyoto's old-world charm.
Where Japan Got Loud Again
Nara and Osaka brought a completely different kind of energy. In Nara, Dinesh and Mary encountered the city's famous deer around the park before visiting Todaiji Temple and its enormous Great Buddha. Horyuji added another layer of history, with its ancient wooden structures and Buddhist heritage giving them a glimpse into Japan's architectural past.
By evening, Osaka had a very different mood waiting for them. Dotonbori was bright, crowded and full of life, with giant illuminated signs, restaurants and people filling the streets. The area around Ebisu Bridge was especially lively, giving them the perfect setting to experience Osaka after dark. After several days of temples, gardens and mountain landscapes, the city's food, lights and bustling atmosphere brought a fun change of pace.
A Trip with Thrillophilia That Already Had Them Looking Ahead
Across seven days, Dinesh and Mary experienced several sides of Japan without staying confined to one kind of holiday. They explored modern Tokyo, stood beneath the shadow of Mount Fuji, walked through traditional Kyoto, discovered the history of Nara and finished among Osaka's lively streets.
