Places to visit in Gangtok

Here are some of the best places in Gangtok:

1. Lake Tsomgo

If you are planning a Gangtok family trip, a visit to Tsomgo Lake, also known as Changu Lake, is a must-visit spot. This lake is located just 42 km from Gangtok City, and sits at a height of 12,313 feet. Take a fun and slow paced ride of the beautifully decorated yaks around the lake. Enjoy picnics and you can also buy refreshments from stalls nearby selling warm tea, maggi, and momos. After exploring the Lake you can go buy souvenirs like Tibetan handicrafts, oven fabric, yak cheese and more or visit the Baba Mandir nearby. Since the lake is at a high altitude, it is best to take it slowly, carry water, and essentials like motion sickness medication, wet wipes, some snacks, especially if you are traveling with kids or elderly members.

2. Nathula Pass

Situated at about 58 kilometers from Gangtok, Nathula connects India to Tibet and is part of the ancient silk route. Winters turn this high altitude pass into a snowy wonderland and you can see the Indo-China border from here. Take photos with the border gate and learn about the country's geography and history. You can also watch the flag lowering ceremony that is held every evening. The ride up to the Nathula Pass is as beautiful as the destination itself as you pass through cloudy mountain roads and wide valleys that look unreal.

3. Banjhakri Falls and Park

Banjhakri Falls and Park is an excellent recreation place that you can visit on your Gangtok family trip. The main attraction here is the 40 feet high plunge waterfall and near the waterfall there is a beautiful landscaped garden. There are several statues placed aesthetically around the garden as well as shaded areas and gazebos providing perfect picnic spots for families. The park was built keeping in mind the shamanic beliefs of the Nepalis and Sikkimese communities here. It is located a mere 9 km from Gangtok city centre and is open daily from 8 am to 5 pm. The park is spread over 2 acres of land and it's carefully designed with paved pathways, and footbridges.

4. Tashi viewpoint

Situated just 7 kms from Gangtok city centre, Tashi viewpoint is a great place for a family retreat. It is best to arrive early so you can witness the golden hues cast over the snow-capped Kanchenjunga by the rising sun. The viewpoint was built by King Tashi Namgyal and surrounding it there are numerous souvenir shops and a cafeteria for you to indulge in some local snacks and beverages. You can also access the mount telescopes set in place for a closer viewing of the peaks.

5. Rumtek monastery

Situated around 22 km from the city, the Rumtek Monastery is the seat of the Karma Kagyu lineage. You can explore the beautifully decorated monastery halls, attend ceremonies, and observe monks performing prayers. You can walk to the Golden Stupa, which holds the relics from the 15th Karmapa. Nearby, there is the Nehru Botanical Garden, which is a lovely spot for a picnic or simply letting the kids enjoy some green space. After your visit, you can eat some local food at the small eatery run by monks serving warm Tibetan and Sikkimese food like thukpas and veg momos.

4. Explore MG Road

Set in the heart of Gangtok, MG Road, or Mahatma Gandhi Road, is a pedestrian-only boulevard that shows the true essence of Sikkim. It stretches approximately 350 meters and is flanked by colourful shops, a variety of eateries, and cozy cafes, making it a favourite spot for tourists and locals alike. This road is a shopper's paradise, and it offers everything from traditional Sikkimese handcrafts to trendy clothing

5. Visit Namgyal Institute for Tibetology

Set in the calm surroundings of Deorali, the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology was established in 1958 and named after the 16th Shogyal of Sikkim, Sir Tashi Namgyal. The institute's museum owns a large collection of artefacts that provide insights into Tibetan, Buddhism and Sikkimese cultures.
