How to Reach Bhutan from Kolkata

Getting to Bhutan from Kolkata is simple: fly into Paro International Airport (PBH), the kingdom’s only international gateway. Since only two carriers serve the route and seats fill fast, book your tickets as soon as you confirm your Bhutan package from Kolkata.

1. Direct Flights from Kolkata
From: Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU)
To: Paro International Airport (PBH)
Airlines: Druk Air, Bhutan Airlines
Duration: About 1 hour 15 minutes gate-to-gate
Frequency: Three to four flights each week, with minor seasonal shifts
Tip: Window seats on the left side give the best Himalayan views when skies are clear.

2. Connecting Flights

Via Indian hubs: If direct seats sell out, connect through Delhi or Guwahati; total travel time is roughly four hours, including a short layover.
Airlines: IndiGo, Air India Express, Alliance Air
Travellers wanting a scenic detour can fly to Bagdogra, drive four hours to the Phuentsholing border, and continue by road - allow at least one extra day for this relaxed overland route.

Best Places to Visit in Bhutan

1. Thimphu:Thimphu sits in a wooded valley at about 7,375 feet above sea level. It is Bhutan’s capital, yet there are no traffic lights; white-gloved police keep cars moving. Walk through Tashichho Dzong to see the King’s offices, then step into the National Memorial Chorten where locals circle with prayer beads. At the National Institute for Zorig Chusum, students learn painting, wood carving and embroidery. End your day at the fifty-one-metre Buddha Dordenma statue and browse the market for chillies, cheese and woven fabric.

Best Time to Visit: March–May, September–November

2. Paro: Paro is the entry point to Bhutan for visitors because the international airport sits in a wide valley surrounded by the snowcapped Himalayas. A Bhutan trip from Kolkata often includes an exploration of Paro, where you can hike to the Tiger’s Nest, a monastery clinging nine hundred metres above the city. Inside the town, you can cross a wooden bridge to Rinpung Dzong, then visit Ta Dzong, the round tower now serving as the National Museum. Shops along the main street sell yak-wool scarves, red rice, and prayer wheels.

Best Time to Visit: March–May, September–November

3. Punakha: Punakha lies at the meeting point of two rivers, so the air is warmer and the land greener than in the higher valleys. The seventeenth-century Punakha Dzong stands on a spit of land between the Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu rivers, and guards relics of Bhutan’s early kings. Walk across one of the country’s longest suspension bridges, with a length of 160 metres, for views of rice terraces and purple jacaranda blooms in spring. A gentle hike through fields leads to Chimi Lhakhang, a historic temple where couples seek blessings for children.

Best Time to Visit: October–April

4. Phobjikha Valley: Phobjikha Valley is a broad glacial bowl at 9,800 feet in the Black Mountains. Each winter, hundreds of black-necked cranes migrate from Tibet and feed in the marsh, an event locals mark with dances at Gangtey Monastery. The easy Gangtey Nature Trail lets you watch the birds without disturbance. Energy cables run underground to keep the skyline clear. Many travellers add the valley to a Bhutan package from Kolkata to combine an offbeat experience.

Best Time to Visit: October–February

5. Bumthang: Bumthang covers four linked valleys, all lush with buckwheat, dairy farms and apple orchards. It is seen as Bhutan’s spiritual heart because it houses temples from the seventh century. Visit Jambay Lhakhang and Kurjey Lhakhang, where murals trace the life of Guru Rinpoche. Tamshing Monastery shows early Bhutanese art painted by hand on its walls. Between sightseeing, you can sample honey, cheese and locally brewed red panda beer in Jakar town, then cycle quiet roads beside cool, clear mountain rivers.

Best Time to Visit: March-May, September–November.

1. Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang): Start your Bhutan trip from Kolkata with a visit to this cliff-top site near Paro. The walk up takes about two hours through pine trees and bright prayer flags. Water from a small waterfall cools the last steps. The buildings date to 1692 and wrap around the cave where Guru Rinpoche once meditated. Inside, you will see gold statues and age-old murals, while balconies give wide views of the valley.

Finished in 2015 to mark the Fourth King’s sixtieth birthday, it boasts a height of 177 feet and shines with gold. Inside the hollow statue are 125,000 smaller Buddhas. Wall paintings tell stories from the Buddha’s life, and a big hall hosts daily prayers. Visit around sunset hours when soft light spreads across the town and the hills.

Location: Kuenselphodrang, Thimphu, Bhutan
Timings: 09:00 a.m. to 05:00 p.m.
Entry Fee: Free

3. Tashichho Dzong (Fortress of the Glorious Religion): Every Bhutan package from Kolkata stops at this riverside fortress in Thimphu. Rebuilt in the 1960s on older foundations, Tashichho Dzong now holds the King’s offices and thirty temples. White walls, neat lawns, and gold roofs stand out against green hills. During evenings, you can watch monks in red robes chant their evening prayers. The courtyard comes alive each September during the colourful Thimphu Tsechu festival.

You cross a wooden bridge to reach a courtyard shaded by purple jacaranda trees in spring. Inside, murals show scenes from Guru Rinpoche’s life, and sacred relics honour early kings. You can enjoy views of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers from the balconies, while nearby rice terraces add calm green views for travellers heading east.

Location: Punakha, Bhutan
Timings: 09:00 a.m. to 05:00 p.m. (closed on Sunday)
Entry Fee: INR 500 per person

5. Dochula Pass: Most routes on a Bhutan tourism package from Kolkata include this 10,171-feet-high pass between Thimphu and Punakha. You can see a ring of 108 white chortens here, which honours soldiers who fell in 2003. On clear days, you can spot peaks such as Gangkar Puensum far to the north. The nearby Druk Wangyal Lhakhang temple shows murals that mix royal events with local legends. Red rhododendrons bloom around tables and short forest trails.

Location: Between Thimphu and Punakha, Bhutan
Timings: Open 24 hours
Entry Fee: Free

6. National Institute for Zorig Chusum: This Thimphu school keeps thirteen traditional Bhutanese crafts alive, from painting and weaving to bronze work, embroidery and wood carving. Opened in 1971, it runs four- to six-year courses led by master artists. Guests can walk through workshops, smelling wood shavings and paint as students draw deities, carve masks and weave silk. A small shop sells finished pieces, and earnings help fund the training. Visiting shows how much time and care go into the art you see across the kingdom.

Location: FJMJ+4JV, Thimphu, Bhutan
Timings: 09:00 a.m. to 05:00 p.m. (closed on Saturday and Sunday)
Entry Fee: INR 100 per person

Insider Tips for Travellers

Best Time to Book: Reserve your Bhutan tour 6–8 weeks in advance, especially during spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) when festivals and treks are in full swing.

Visa & Permits: Indian nationals don’t need a visa, but must carry a valid passport or voter ID. Entry permits are required for Thimphu and Paro, and additional permits for Punakha or Phobjikha might be required, which are usually covered in Thrillophilia’s Bhutan tour packages from Kolkata.

Currency & Payments: The Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN) is almost equal in value to the Indian Rupee, which is widely accepted (₹500 and ₹100 denominations preferred). Carry some cash, as digital payments may not work in remote areas.

Connectivity: Indian SIMs usually lose signal after entering Bhutan. You can easily buy a TashiCell or B-Mobile SIM at Paro or Phuentsholing by showing your permit.

Altitude & Health: Most towns lie between 2,000–3,000 metres, so it is recommended to stay hydrated, walk slowly, and avoid overexertion during the first day.

Local Etiquette: Dress modestly while visiting monasteries and dzongs, remove shoes before entering, and avoid photographing monks without permission.

Packing Tip: Carry light woollens even in summer as the temperatures drop at night. During winter, layered clothing is essential.

6. Only Carbon-Negative Country: Bhutan absorbs more carbon dioxide than it emits, making it the world’s only carbon-negative country.

7. Rare Snow Leopard Sightings: Bhutan is home to rare species like the snow leopard, which roams its mountainous regions.
