How To Reach New Zealand

Flying is the best way to travel from Mumbai to New Zealand, but there are no direct flights currently. You get top commercial airlines with one or two stops each day.

To reach New Zealand from Mumbai, you must take a connecting flight from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) to Auckland International Airport (AKL), as there are no direct flights. Flights take between 16 and 22 hours with one or two layovers. Moreover, ticket prices typically range from ₹50,000 to ₹120,000+ one-way, depending on the season and how early you book.

Flight Options and Layover Cities

Major airlines operate one-stop and two-stop flights to New Zealand with layovers in transit hubs:

  • Singapore Airlines: Layovers at Changi Airport, Singapore.
  • Malaysia Airlines: Layovers at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Malaysia.
  • Cathay Pacific: Layovers at Hong Kong International Airport.
  • Emirates or Qatar Airways: Layovers in the Middle East.

Visa / Permits

Indian passport holders travelling for tourism require an approved visitor visa before arriving in New Zealand. Applications are processed online via the Immigration New Zealand portal, with typical processing times ranging between 20 and 27 working days.

Essential Requirements and Documents

To successfully apply for a visitor visa, Indian travellers must provide the following:

  • Valid Passport: Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from New Zealand, with a minimum of two blank pages.
  • Photographs: Two recent colour photographs measuring 35mm × 45mm, meeting official photo specifications.
  • Financial Proof: Evidence of sufficient funds, typically NZ$ 1,000 per month for maintenance and accommodation, or NZ$ 400 per month if accommodation is prepaid. This includes the last 6 months of stamped bank statements, salary slips, income tax returns (ITR) for the last 3 years, and proof of additional investments.
  • Proof of Travel & Stay: A detailed cover letter explaining the purpose of your trip, along with a tentative travel itinerary, confirmed return flight tickets, and hotel bookings.
  • Travel Insurance: Recommended for the entire duration of your stay, covering emergency medical and hospitalisation expenses.

Application Process

  1. Submit Online: Fill out the application form on the Immigration New Zealand website and upload all required documents (translated into English if necessary).
  2. Passport Submission: Once your online application is submitted, you will receive instructions to submit your physical passport to VFS Global (the official partner in India) for visa stamping.
  3. Traveller Declaration: All travellers must complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration online within 24 hours before departure.

Best Time To Visit New Zealand

Before you plan, just remember that the timing of New Zealand's seasons is opposite to India's. So December is actually summer in New Zealand, and May is winter.

Once you know this, it becomes much easier to choose the right time for your kind of trip. Sumanta Roy, one of our verified travellers from Kolkata, who booked the All-in-One New Zealand Tour package, shared in April 2026 that “It was an amazing trip. It has fjords, glaciers, mountains, lakes, meadows, farms and humility. We realised how tiny we are in the larger scheme of things. It's such a beautiful destination. Thanks to ThrillOphelia for making it an everlasting memory. Thanks specifically to Vasu (Vasudevan), who patiently managed me and delivered the best of the customised itinerary for me. Love you, Vasu, for such wonderful memories.”

  • December to February (Summer): It is certainly the best time to travel to New Zealand as the temperature hovers around 20°C to 30°C. It is the perfect time to experience beaches, swimming, and skydiving.
  • March to May and September to November (Shoulder Season): Spring (September-November) is a sweet spot for travel in New Zealand with fewer crowds and better prices. Lake Tekapo comes alive with lupins, while the Southern Alps still hold snow. With mild weather and temperatures between 15°C and 25°C, it’s a good time for hiking or cycling in places like Mount Cook and Tongariro. This is the best time for experiencing spring blooms, autumn foliage, and affordable lodge rates.
  • June to August (Winter): The winter months from June to August are the low season in New Zealand. Mercury dips to 5°C - 15°C with snowfall in the mountains. If you like to experience skiing in Queenstown, then this is when you need to plan. During this time, you can enjoy gondola rides in Queenstown, luge rides, snowshoeing, and alpine walks.

Best Places To Visit In New Zealand

Here are some of the best places to visit in New Zealand:

1. Auckland: Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city and a must-visit place in the tour package for New Zealand from Mumbai. The city is famous for its iconic Sky Tower, the historic Auckland Museum, and the bustling harbour. You can gain insights into Maori culture at the Auckland War Memorial Museum or simply relax at stunning beaches like Piha and Takapuna. This port city offers adventure seekers a plethora of outdoor activities like sailing, hiking, and bungee jumping.

2. Milford Sound: Located in the South Island, this fjord looks breathtakingly beautiful with towering peaks like Mitre Peak and waterfalls like Stirling and Bowen. You can explore this region through scenic boat rides and kayaking tours and witness various water species like seals, penguins, and dolphins. You can also hike along the famous Milford Track and visit the Milford Discovery Centre and Underwater Observatory here.

3. Fiordland National Park: Fiordland National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site in New Zealand that you should definitely include in your tour package for New Zealand from Mumbai. The park is home to the iconic Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound, which are famous for their dramatic fjords and cascading waterfalls. Hike the famous Milford Track, kayak on serene lakes, and encounter unique wildlife with seals and penguins at this national park.

4. Queenstown: Queenstown is playfully dubbed the "Adventure Capital of the World" as the city offers a playground for thrill-seekers. You can marvel at the city’s skyline with the Skyline Queenstown Gondola ride, bungee jump at Kawarau Bridge and Nevis Bungy or skydive over Remarkables Mountain for an adrenaline rush. In addition, you can cruise on Lake Wakatipu, explore wineries in Central Otago and create happy memories.

5. Waiheke Island: Waiheke Island is located a short ferry ride from Auckland. The islands beautifully showcase the Mediterranean-like charm and stunning landscapes. You can explore world-class vineyards, indulge in wine tastings, and savour gourmet cuisine at waterfront restaurants. Nature lovers can relax on pristine beaches, hike scenic trails, or embark on kayaking adventures.

6. Christchurch: Known as the "Garden City", Christchurch is famous for its lush botanical gardens. Other popular attractions here are the Christchurch Art Gallery, the Canterbury Museum and the iconic Christchurch Cathedral. With its picturesque parks and charming neighbourhoods, Christchurch offers a delightful urban experience to enjoy in New Zealand tour packages from Mumbai.

Things To Do In New Zealand

Here are some of the best things to do in New Zealand:

1. Set Sail in the Bay of Islands: With its stunning natural beauty, crystal-clear waters, and over 140 picturesque islands, this New Zealand paradise is one of the best places in the world to go on an island-hopping tour. You can sail peacefully in the Bay of Islands and soak in the serene landscapes. Adventure lovers can add snorkelling to their New Zealand tour packages from Mumbai and enjoy an adventurous maritime experience.

2. Taste New Zealand’s Finest Wines on Waiheke Island: New Zealand has some of the world's best wines, and the vineyards here have breathtaking landscapes. Waiheke Island here is fondly known as the "Island of Wine", as it boasts world-class wineries producing award-winning varietals. Go on a wine-tasting tour at Waiheke and savour the flavours of premium wines. You can also soak in panoramic views of the island's lush scenery and enjoy a truly unforgettable and delectable experience.

3. Hang Out at the Hamilton Gardens: Located on the banks of the Waikato River, Hamilton Gardens is a hidden gem that you should visit with New Zealand tour packages from Mumbai. This themed garden is inspired by cultures from around the world, including Italian Renaissance, Japanese, and Chinese gardens. You can stroll along serene pathways, marvel at stunning floral displays, and unwind in peaceful surroundings.

4. Visit the Glowworm Caves at Waitomo: The Glowworm Caves are centuries-old natural caves located at Waitomo and are inhabited by thousands of luminescent glowworms. You can witness these special creatures illuminating the dark caverns by taking a small boat ride. Visit this place during your New Zealand trip from Mumbai and observe the mesmerising sight of naturally illuminated caves above you.

5. See Kiwi Birds in the Wild: Embark on a wildlife adventure to the remote sanctuaries in regions like Stewart Island, Fiordland National Park, and the Waitangi Treaty Grounds to witness the Kiwi birds in their natural habitat. These areas offer the best chances to observe Kiwis in the wild. If you love birdwatching and nature walks, then you should definitely include this activity in New Zealand tours from Mumbai.

6. Ride the Rere Rock Slide: Located near Gisborne on the North Island, the Rere Rock Slide is a natural water slide. The rock formation of the waterfall is naturally inclined at about 30 degrees with running water. You can glide down its smooth surface into refreshing pools below and experience an adrenaline-pumping adventure. This natural rock slide is surrounded by stunning native bush, making it an ideal location to picnic and have fun.

New Zealand was one of those trips that stays in your mind long after you’re back. The landscapes were incredible, but what made the journey special was how varied everything felt one day scenic drives, another day adventure activities, and then quiet evenings in beautiful towns. A long-distance trip like this can become stressful if planning is not good, so having everything arranged in advance really helped. Hotels, transfers, and local coordination were smooth, which gave us the freedom to just enjoy the experience. Thank you team thrillophilia

Five friends from Coimbatore we have been wanting to do New Zealand for years and finally made it happen. Domestic flight between islands was timed well. Hotels were comfortable and guides were knowledgeable. The team was reachable throughout despite the time difference. One suggestion the Auckland to Queenstown travel day felt a bit long. Planned a year in advance and Thrillophilia helped us plan it properly not just book it. They explained why the South Island does better in certain months, suggested Kaikoura for whale watching which we had not considered, and positioned the North Island thermal experience on a day the geysers are most active according to historical patterns. Saw sperm whales from the boat in Kaikoura which was genuinely unexpected. Milford Sound still the most beautiful place I have been. Zero issues throughout 14 days new zealand trip.
