How to Reach Arunachal Pradesh from Mumbai

The easiest way to reach Arunachal Pradesh from Mumbai is to take a connecting flight to Itanagar or Dibrugarh. The whole journey takes around 6-9 hours and costs between INR 8,000 and 16,000 depending on your booking time and season. You can avail yourself of a shared/private cab from the airport to go across Arunachal Pradesh after landing.

Flights to Itanagar

  • Airport: HGI - Donyi Polo Airport
  • Operating Airline: Primarily IndiGo
  • Layover cities: Kolkata or Guwahati

Flights to Dibrugarh

  • Airport: DIB - Mohanbari Airport
  • Operating Airlines: IndiGo, Air India, and Akasa Air
  • Layover Cities: Kolkata or Guwahati

You can also choose a train journey to enter Arunachal Pradesh from Mumbai for a budget Arunachal Pradesh trip since it's the most economical mode of transfer. Due to the lack of direct trains, you would have to reach Assam first, followed by a connection to Naharlagun, the railway station of Itanagar.

Permit Requirements for an Arunachal Pradesh Trip from Mumbai

For visiting Arunachal Pradesh, Indian citizens require an ILP (Inner Line Permit), which costs INR 300 for up to 3 days or INR 500 for 3 to 14 days. You can apply online via the Arunachal eILP Portal or offline at border check gates, Arunachal Bhawans, or Deputy Commissioner offices.

Basic requirements include a scanned copy of an Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, Driver's Licence, or Passport for identity proof and a recent passport-size colour photograph. Minors under 14 years do not need a separate permit if accompanied by an adult, but individuals 14 and older must have their own ILP.

Note that foreign nationals do not qualify for an ILP; instead, they must acquire a Protected Area Permit (PAP) through a registered tour operator in a group of at least two people.

Thrillophilia’s Arunachal Pradesh tour packages from Mumbai include comprehensive permit guidance as required by your itinerary.

Enjoyed the natural beauty of Arunachal Pradesh and soaked in the peaceful monastic vibes. We had a fun group and the driver was very nice and helpful too. Facilities were basic, but decent for the remote region. Felt that a guide to explain the various monasteries would make the trip even more enriching. But overall, completely satisfied and content with my experience. Fourth trip with Thrilliophilia after Sikkim, Spiti and Bhutan. More to come!

Arunachal Pradesh was on my list for years and Thrillophilia sorted everything inner line permits, restricted area permits, all in advance. Tawang monastery at dawn with prayer flags in the wind and the mountains behind. The Bumla Pass at the India-China border at 15,200 feet. Our local guide Tashi Norbu knew the area as well as his own home and was full of stories about the 1962 border history. This is not an easy destination to plan independently and having a team that had done it before made all the difference.

Arunachal Pradesh is India's most spectacular and least explored state - and this tour proves exactly that. Tawang Monastery sitting at 10,000 feet with snow around it is an image I won't forget anytime soon.

Ten days across the Northeast gave a genuinely broad picture of how diverse and beautiful this region is. From Assam's tea and tigers to Meghalaya's waterfalls and living root bridges to Arunachal's monasteries, each state surprised me. The logistics of moving between remote destinations were handled remarkably well. This region rewards curiosity and this itinerary was structured to deliver exactly that. In Short everyone should visit there highly recommended

Arunachal Pradesh Tours From mumbai FAQs

Can you travel to Arunachal Pradesh from Mumbai on a budget?

Northeast India is one of the few affordable destinations in India that offers year-round travelling windows with multiple tourist-friendly areas and experiences. For a budget trip, INR 21,000-24,000 per person is perfect for you to comfortably cover all major attractions without feeling rushed.

Are vegetarian food options available in Arunachal Pradesh?

While the local cuisine is more meat-heavy, traveller-focused areas have multiple vegetarian restaurants and local stalls. Itanagar specifically has a vegetarian-friendly, strong cafe and bakery culture.

Which one is better for a honeymoon: Dirang or Tawang?

Both of these cities in Arunachal serve a different purpose, suiting different traveller needs. If you’re seeking a culture-based honeymoon with slow-paced travelling and local culture, Dirang is perfect for you. For a nature-heavy honeymoon with dramatic UNESCO sites and alpine lakes, Tawang is the better choice.

Is Arunachal Pradesh suited for luxury trips?

Yes, however, you will find more nature-focused premium experiences here rather than urban ones. Expect boutique resorts, valley-view rooms, riverside cottages, private transfers, strategically chosen experiences, and privacy-focused detailing.

Is an Arunachal Pradesh tour from Mumbai good during the monsoon?

Arunachal Pradesh is beautiful in the monsoon season with its waterfalls at full force, lush and green landscapes, and heavy cloud movement. If you don’t mind a flexible itinerary and possible delays caused by landslides, you can comfortably have a beautiful monsoon trip there.

Are the roads of Arunachal Pradesh difficult?

Although the scenic roads make for a unique experience by themselves, the weather largely affects their visibility, other than their slow progression. This is why overpacked itineraries reduce comfort since the regions are located far apart from one another, resulting in little time to actually take in the scenery.

Is Arunachal Pradesh safe for Mumbai travellers?

Arunachal Pradesh is considered to be one of the safest Indian destinations. The people are welcoming with minimal traveller crime rates. However, you should still be cautious of your belongings and verify your driver’s authenticity and expertise in navigating the roads beforehand.

How many days are enough for an Arunachal Pradesh trip from Mumbai?

5-7 days are perfect for covering the main zones of Arunachal Pradesh, like Shillong, Tawang, Bhalukpong, and Dawki, at a comfortable pace. Any fewer than 5 days covering the same regions would result in a rushed tour and a dissatisfying experience.

What is the best time for an Arunachal Pradesh trip from Mumbai?

Each season of Arunachal has something unique for all couples. For overall best weather, October-April is perfect, while June to September works best for waterfalls and lush landscapes. For budget-friendly, comfortable weather, choose March-April.

Is Arunachal Pradesh a good destination for a honeymoon?

Arunachal Pradesh is a quiet, scenic part of India whose many areas are still free of excessive crowds and commercialisation, making it perfect for honeymoons. If you’re a couple seeking nature, culture, mountainscapes, cafes, quiet stays, and slow-paced travelling, then Arunachal is perfect for you.
