Places to Visit in Meghalaya:

Here are some of the best places to visit in Meghalaya.

1. Shillong

You can visit Shillong with Meghalaya packages from Mumbai, which is located at an elevation of 4990 feet. It is known for its pine-covered hills, and the diverse tribal communities. Here, you can enjoy your time at Elephant Falls, hike to Laitlum Canyons, and go boating in Umiam Lake. You can also shop for items at the Police Bazar and explore the Don Bosco Museum. For more in-depth adventures, go to Mawphlang's sacred groves or Mawlynnong's living root bridges. To round out your trip in this ‘Rock Capital of India’, you can also go to indie and rock music events like NH-7 Weekender.

2. Cherrapunji

Also known as Sohra, Cherrapunji is one of the wettest places on Earth which is known for its Khasi heritage, waterfalls, and caves. It is the location of the limestone Mawsmai Caves and the tallest plunge waterfall in India, called the Nohkalikai Falls. During the monsoon season, you can come here to witness the Dainthlen Falls or Wei Sawdong's three-level secret waterfall. However, in the dry months, you can take part in a picturesque hike to the Double Decker Living root bridge during your Meghalaya trip from Mumbai.

3. Dawki

In the West Jaintia Hills, close to the border with Bangladesh, Dawki is a must-see for people who love rivers and wildlife. You can use it as a base to visit Shnongpdeng and Darrang, two beautiful riverside spots where you can camp. In the evening, you can see the fields of Bangladesh lit up with tiny lights, creating a beautiful view. Take a short 8-kilometer trip to Shnongpdeng to float on the clear Umngot River or do cliff jumping, boating, or scuba diving on your Meghalaya trip from Mumbai.

4. Mawlynnong

Mawlynnong is considered to be Asia's cleanest town and can be one of the most peaceful places to visit as part of the Meghalaya tour packages from Mumbai. This lovely village lets you witness Khasi culture and nature, with fruit trees, clear streams, and waving palms all around. You can trek to the Nohwet Living Root Bridge here which was made by bending the roots of rubber trees over many generations. Moreover, you can climb the skywalk here to enjoy views as well as visit the 100-year old Church of the Epiphany.

5. Laitlum Canyon

With Meghalaya tour packages from Mumbai you can have the chance to see the Laitlum Canyon, which lies about 24 km from Shillong. This canyon literally means ‘End of the Hills’ and offers views of lush valleys, deep gorges, and misty hills. It's a great place for hikes, quiet breaks, and watching the sunset. Here, you can hike down to Rasong Village, which is hidden away at the bottom of the canyon. Moreover, for a more in-depth cultural experience you can witness genuine Khasi customs and daily life in this lovely location.

Things to Do in Meghalaya

Here are some of the best things to do in Meghalaya.

1.Trek to Nongriat Village

Reach Nongriat, a remote Khasi town famous for its Double Decker Living Root Bridge, by climbing more than 3,500 stone steps through forested hills. This bridge, which was constructed from the roots of rubber trees, is a natural engineering marvel. You can discover a number of geological treasures in this area, including lagoons, potholes, waterfalls, and natural pools. After walking for another hour, you can trek to the 100-metre high Rainbow Falls to enjoy a refreshing break as part of the Meghalaya packages from Mumbai.

2.Take a Boat Ride on Umiam Lake

On Umiam Lake, you can take a quiet boat ride as part of the Meghalaya tour packages from Mumbai, surrounded by rolling East Khasi hills. Covering 220 square kilometers, the calm water offers stunning views of the sunrise and sunset. This scenic experience is often included in Meghalaya family tour packages, making it perfect for all age groups to enjoy nature together. On this ride, you can see fishermen in wooden boats and people gathering logs along the shore. If you're up for some adventure, you can also indulge in kayaking and canoeing. In the summer, you can see the Gulmohar trees add colour, while in the winter, you can see the lake's water take on a vivid blue appearance.

3.Explore the Living Root Bridges

Explore Meghalaya's living root bridges in Cherrapunji and Nongriat. These are man-made wonders made by weaving Ficus (rubber) tree roots across rivers. To get to the famous Double Decker Root Bridge, you have to walk up and down steep paths for two to three hours. As time goes on, you can see how these bridges get stronger as the roots naturally join together and support the bamboo scaffolding. Thus, on your Meghalaya trip from Mumbai, this is a must-see as it gives you a unique look at nature and the creativity of the local people.

4.Visit Mawlynnong Village

With Meghalaya packages from Mumbai, you can explore Asia's cleanest Mawlynnong Village, which offers spotless walkways and beautiful gardens. It provides stunning views and a glimpse into the unique matrilineal society of the Khasi people. Here, you can explore the well-known Jingmaham Living Root Bridge, which represents the symbol of the unity of nature and community working together. Moreover, you can witness the village's environmentally conscious lifestyle, where the dwellers actively take part in garbage management, recycling, and rainwater collection. This serene setting is also a favourite stop for couples on a honeymoon trip to Meghalaya.

5.Hiking at Laitlum Canyons

You can visit Laitlum Canyon, which is only 24 km from Shillong, with Meghalaya tour packages from Mumbai. This canyon, which denotes ‘End of the Hills’, provides breathtaking views of green valleys, steep canyons, and misty mountains. Here, you can hike, take a break, and watch a beautiful sunset. Moreover, you can also hike down to Rasong Village at the bottom of the canyon and see real Khasi customs and their everyday life, an experience that fits perfectly into a Meghalaya group trip.

Best Time to Visit Meghalaya

The best time to visit Meghalaya is between March to June, when the pleasantly breezy and clear skies make it perfect for sightseeing. During winter, from October to February, you can make the most of misty mornings, quiet nature walks and relaxed sightseeing amidst lesser tourist crowds. While July to September brings heavy monsoon rain that can make travel difficult, it’s also the best time to see waterfalls like Seven Sisters and Bophill Falls. So, those who enjoy dense greenery and the rain, this season is perfect for photographers and monsoon lovers.
