How to Reach Meghalaya From Kolkata

While you are planning for your Meghalaya trip from Kolkata, you can travel by train, road or air as per your preferences. Moreover, all three ways give you completely different experiences while you reach your destination.

By Air

While planning for your Meghalaya tour package from Kolkata, a flight can be the most convenient and fastest way to reach your destination.

Direct Flights

  • To: Shillong
  • From: Kolkata
  • Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Price: INR 4,500 to INR 6,000, depending on the demands and season.
  • Airline: IndiGo

Additionally, you can also travel via Guwahati and reach Shillong by a 100 km road journey.

  • To: Guwahati, Assam
  • From: Kolkata
  • Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Price: INR 4,000 – INR 5,500
  • Airline: IndiGo, Air India Express, or Air India

Note: Because Shillongi Airport is small and located in a higher-altitude valley, flights are occasionally delayed and cancelled because of fog and poor visibility. After landing in Guwahati, you will reach Shillong by travelling for 3 more hours by road.

Connecting Flights

  • To: Shillong
  • From: Kolkata
  • Layover: Agartala or Imphal
  • Duration: 3 to 6+ hours (depending on layover)
  • Price: INR 7,000 – INR 10,000
  • Airline: Indigo

Note: We don’t recommend taking connecting flights to Shillong, as it can take more time and cost you more while you are planning your Meghalaya trip from Kolkata.

By Train

Travelling from Kolkata to Meghalaya might not be time-saving, but it can be one of the most cost-effective and scenic journeys one can ever have. Since Meghalaya doesn't have any direct railway network, you must travel to Guwahati, Assam and cover the last part of the journey to Shillong by road.

  • From: Howrah Junction or Sealdah Junction
  • To: Guwahati Railway Station or Kamakhya Station
  • Key stops: Barddhaman, Malda Town, Kishanganj, and New Jalpaiguri.
  • Duration: 14 to 20 hours, depending on the train
  • Price: INR 500 to INR 2000
  • Popular Train Options: Saraighat Express (12345), Kanchanjunga Express (13175), Guwahati Garib Rath (12517)

By Road

While planning for your Meghalaya tour package from Kolkata, travelling via road can be the most unforgettable journey, offering freedom and a scenic experience. If you are travelling with your group, this could be one of the most fun and cost-effective ways to reach your destination.

Private Cars

  • Route: Kolkata to Malda to Siliguri, then Alipurduar (Dooars), followed by Bongaigaon (Assam) to Guwahati and finally to Shillong.
  • Distance: Approximately 1,100 km to 1,150 km (depending on the exact highway choices in North Bengal)
  • Duration: 20 to 24 hours of pure driving time
  • Cost: Around INR 10,000 to INR 14,000 (including night toll taxes and fuel)

Note: It is highly recommended to break this into a 2-day journey with an overnight stay at Malda or Siliguri to avoid any accidents. Moreover, the last 80 km from Guwahati to Shillong is entirely a hill climb. Ensure the person who would be driving has enough experience driving on winding hill climbs.

Buses

Kolkata and Shillong (or any other major towns located throughout Meghalaya) are well connected by public transportation through the regular bus service. Both state-owned and privately owned buses offer service from Guwahati to Shillong; travel time from Guwahati to Shillong via bus is about 2 hours and 12 minutes.

Best Time to Go For Meghalaya Trip From Kolkata

Meghalaya offers diverse experiences throughout the year. If you are planning a Meghalaya tour package from Kolkata, it can be an escape to a diverse climatic and cultural landscape from the scorching heat of Kolkata. Though Meghalaya has something new to offer throughout the year, the peak season to visit Meghalaya is between October and February.

1. Peak Season (October to February)

  • The temperature is somewhere between 4°C and 16°C, providing a clear, dry and sunny day with a cool night.
  • One of the most attractive aspects of this season is that the water of the Umngot River in Dawki turns completely crystal-clear and transparent.
  • It is the perfect time for exploring trekking, adventure caving, and outdoor camping.
  • This is the peak time to experience cherry blossom in mid-November.

2. Shoulder Season (March to May)

  • This is the best time to escape Kolkata’s scorching heat, as this is the perfect mountain retreat.
  • Mild humid weather ranging from 15°C to 25°C.
  • Great for light treks without any extreme winter chill or heavy rain.

3. Monsoon Season (July to September)

  • This season is fully covered with heavy mist, rainfall and highly humid weather.
  • Best time to witness dramatic rivers and waterfalls: Waterfalls like Nohkalikai Falls and Seven Sisters Falls are in their most ferocious, majestic forms.
  • Not recommended for families or first-time visitors because of the high risk of landslides.
  • Fewer crowds and high discounts on flights and hotel bookings.

Places to Visit on Meghalaya Trip From Kolkata

Here are some of the best places to visit in Meghalaya:

1. Shillong

While planning for a Meghalaya tour package from Kolkata, Shillong, which is also referred to as the “Scotland of the East", is the main gateway to enter Meghalaya. Shillong is also the hub from where you can visit the other parts of Meghalaya, like the wettest place on Earth, Cherrapunji, the clean borders of Mawlynnong, and the crystal waters of Dawki. Spending 1 to 2 nights in Shillong is sufficient to cover the city sights before moving deeper into the hills.

2. Cherrapunji

About 54 km away from Shillong, Cherrapunji is famous for its dramatic cliffs and landscapes covered with mist. A few of the most iconic spots one must not miss in Cherrapunji while planning for their Meghalaya tour package from Kolkata are Nohkalikai Falls, Seven Sisters Waterfall and Mawsmai Cave. Once the world's wettest place, it is famous for its double-decker living root bridge, lush flora, natural attractions, Mawsmai Caves, and Mawlyngnong, Asia's cleanest village, all included in your Meghalaya tour packages from Kolkata.

Aditya Srivastava, one of our verified travellers from Kolkata who booked the Mesmerising Meghalaya & group tour package, shared in March 2026 that "Exploring Shillong, Cherrapunji, and Dawki with the group made the journey even more enjoyable. The waterfalls, living root bridges, and crystal-clear river views were absolutely stunning. Everything was well-organised, and we travelled comfortably throughout.

3. Mawlynnong

Mawlynnong gained global recognition after being declared, by international travel publications, the cleanest village in Asia in 2003. This title remains an accurate reflection of the community's daily dedication to hygiene, pulling in thousands of travellers every year.

Travelling here gives you a striking glimpse of how indigenous Khasi culture seamlessly integrates with sustainable ecotourism. The key sights which must be covered in the Meghalaya trip from Kolkata are the Skywalk Structure and the Living Root Bridge at Riwai, while you visit Mawlynnong.

4. Dawki

Dawki, which has the Umngot River as its main attraction, offers both boating and scenic views of the riverbed. This very small town in the Jaintia Hills is located on the border between India and Bangladesh and is popular with tourists, especially during the springtime boat-riding contest held on the Umngot River.

Supriya Das, one of our travellers from Kolkata who booked the Delightful Journey to Meghalaya & FREE Double Decker Bridge Trek package, shared in April 2026 that "Meghalaya genuinely feels like a different country with the living root bridges, the Dawki River and the Cherrapunji waterfalls. This six-day package covered all the best spots without ever feeling rushed or overcrowded. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to explore India beyond the usual tourist trail.” Make sure to include this area in any Meghalaya package tours from Kolkata.

5. Mawsynram

You might also consider visiting the world's wettest place as a weekend destination, about 61 km away from Shillong. Even though Cherrapunji is known worldwide for being the wettest place, Mawsynram receives more annual rainfall than even Cherrapunji, which is famous for its unique megaliths as well as a Shiva-linga-shaped stalagmite. Observe during your Meghalaya trip from Kolkata how the local villagers utilise thick grass for soundproofing their residences against heavy rains.

Things to Do on the Meghalaya Tour From Kolkata

Here are some of the best things to do in Meghalaya:

1. Trek to the Living Root Bridges: A trek to the living root bridge is one of the top activities during a Meghalaya trip from Kolkata. You can get this experience at Nongriat village, Cherrapunji (double-decker bridge) or Mawlynnong (smaller, easier bridge). Arnab Das, one of our travellers from Kolkata who booked the Meghalaya | Small Group Tour package, shared in April 2026 that "the double-decker living root bridge trek is genuinely one of India's greatest natural wonders.”

2. Boating on the Umngot River: Boating on the Umngot River in Dawki, West Jaintia Hills, is one of the most beautiful experiences you can ever have during your Meghalaya trip from Kolkata.

3. Visit Mawsmai Cave: Mawsmai Cave in Cherrapunji is one of the most accessible limestone caves in Meghalaya, offering a safe glimpse into the state's vast underground networks without requiring specialised caving gear.

4. Camp by the Umiam Lake: While planning for your Meghalaya tour package from Kolkata, camping by the Umiam Lake needs to be on your bucket list. A hub for adventure and picnics, camping by this lake provides an exhilarating experience with activities like 'jumaring', rock climbing, rappelling, and zip-lining.

5. Go trekking along the David Scott Trail: This famous David Scott Trail was discovered by David Scott, a well-known explorer. This is a well-used trail to visit while you're planning for your Meghalaya tour package from Kolkata.

Tips to follow during a Meghalaya trip from Kolkata

  • Indian nationals do not need a restricted area or Inner Line Permit (ILP) to visit Meghalaya, but mandatory visitor registration is strictly enforced. You must register on the Discover Meghalaya Tourism Portal or the official mobile app to generate an e-invite with a QR code before entering.
  • Travellers must carry Aadhaar, a voter ID, a passport, or a driving licence (ensure all members of your group carry original copies and 2-3 photocopies). You will need to declare your full itinerary and your first night's accommodation details. Printouts of your hotel or homestay bookings are also highly recommended in case of low internet connectivity. Know more from the official Meghalaya tourism department portal.

This is our second trip with Thrillophilia and our experience was as good as the 1st one to Rajasthan. This was a 7N8D trip to Assam and Meghalaya. As we went there in the last week of April we saw all the waterfalls in their full splendor. We also saw Emerald green river water. Clear water was visible at KrangShuri falls. We loved the trek to the Famed Single and Double Decker living root bridges. We trust Thrillophilia because of their excellent choice of comfortable hotels. Special mention about our driver, Rajkumar, after knowing that we are vegetarians he took us to some awesome restaurants through the journey. Also suggested an ama... Read More

Meghalaya was genuinely one of the most extraordinary trips I have taken within India. The living root bridges at Nongriat require real effort but standing on a bridge that has been growing for five hundred years shaped by human hands across generations is unlike any other experience. Dawki river in the early morning when there are no other boats was surreal, the water so transparent the boat appeared to float in air. Our driver added genuine depth to every stop. Cherrapunji, Mawlynnong, Shillong all covered at a pace that let us absorb the place. They handled permits and local logistics. A trip I will remember forever.
