Top Places to Visit in Kerala from Chennai

1. Munnar: Tea Heritage and Eravikulam Peaks

Munnar sits at 1,600 metres above sea level and feels like a completely different world for travellers arriving from the heat of Chennai. Visit the Tata Tea Museum to learn about tea cultivation and processing. Eravikulam National Park is a major highlight, famous for the endangered Nilgiri Tahr and the rare Neelakurinji that blooms once every 12 years. Waterfalls like Attukad and Lakkam are also worth exploring.

2. Thekkady: Where Forest Trails Tell Untamed Stories

Thekkady is where the forest feels close. Spot elephants, deer, and sometimes tigers in Periyar National Park. Visit spice plantations, take a boat ride on Periyar Lake, or go for a guided forest walk where you might spot a Great Hornbill or a Kingfisher. One of our verified traveller Priya D. who booked the Best of Coorg & Wayanad | Misty Meadows and Scenic Trails package specifically mentioned this stating that “The drive to Thekkady was a bit curvy, but the stunning scenery made the journey very enjoyable. The coordination was very professional and we never had to wait for our vehicle at any point.”

3. Alleppey: A Backwater Dream You'll Never Forget

Enjoy a houseboat ride across Vembanad Lake with good food, calm water, and views that keep changing. Try a canoe ride through the smaller canals for something closer to local life. Boat cruises run from about 12 PM to 5:30 PM before anchoring for the evening.

4. Kumarakom: A Lakeside Haven of Peace and Beauty

Kumarakom is a must-add for travellers who want to stay at a resort, relax, and try Ayurveda. Explore the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, spot herons and migratory Siberian cranes, and go for a sunset boat ride on Vembanad Lake.

5. Kochi: A Cultural Mosaic by the Sea

Walking through Fort Kochi, you will see old buildings and streets carrying traces of Portuguese, Dutch, and British influence. The Chinese fishing nets near the coast are hard to miss at sunset. Spend time in Mattancherry, visit the Dutch Palace, and walk through Jew Town's historic spice-lined lanes.

6. Kovalam: Classic Beach Holiday

Kovalam is ideal for a classic beach holiday with easy accessibility from Thiruvananthapuram. Lighthouse Beach and Hawa Beach are perfect for relaxing, water sports, or watching sunsets over the Arabian Sea.

7. Varkala: Cliffside Beach Views

Varkala is the only place in Kerala where dramatic red cliffs run right alongside the Arabian Sea. Papanasam Beach is known for its religious significance, while the cliff area is lined with cafés and scenic viewpoints. It is also one of the best places in Kerala to enjoy authentic Ayurvedic massages.
