    Kinnaur
    d15 Days n14 Nights

Kinnaur is the most scenic but less known district of Himachal Pradesh, located on the Indo-Tibet border. It is surrounded by Tibet on the east, Garhwal Himalaya trek on the south, Spiti Valley on the north and Kullu on the west. The Sutlej River, which rises on the southern slopes of Kailash Parvat near Mansarovar in Tibet flows through the Kinnaur valley. Due to the proximity of Kinnaur to Tibet, the life style and religion of its inhabitants had been influenced by Buddhism, mostly in the northern and central regions, although the majority of the people practice Hinduism. Set within the Greater trekkings in Himalayan belt it boasts of the highest mountains in Himachal Pradesh. Close to the border with Tibet, entry to Kinnaur was restricted even for Indian nationals till 1993 and foreigners still have to register themselves with Inner line permit. Kinnaur valley comprises of the lower valley of Spiti and Satluj gorge, the two rivers race through valleys of The Satluj and The Spiti. Sutlej river which has its origin (common to the Indus and Bhramaputra rivers) in Lake Mansarovar beside the holy Mt. Kailash in Tibet. Kinnaur holds three of the world's grand mountain ranges - the Zanskar, the Greater Himalaya and the Dhauladhar, Mount Kinner Kailash (6'050 m) dominates this region, it has religious significance for a huge "SHIVA LINGAM" the representation of Lord Shiva which is a 79 feet vertical rock formation that resembles a Shivalinga and changes color as the day passes. This is one of the mythical abodes of Lord Shiva. The circuit around the whole range attracts many pilgrims every year. The Parikrama or circumambulation begins from Kalpa via Triung valley and back to Kalpa via Sangla valley. Drive up to Thangi and the actual trekking begins from here. To reach this forbidden land, India's northern tip, before July, we travel through the Hindustan - Tibet highway, the ancient silk route following the Satluj. The Spiti river joins the Sutlej from the west and runs parallel with the Great Himalayan Range, the natural boundary between India and Tibet (China). In July it is possible to enter Spiti from the north, crossing Rohtang Pass (3980m.) into Lahaul and Kumzum La (4550m).

Kinnaur Kailash Parikrama Trek is a religious yet very adventurous one. If you are someone who would enjoy really long treks which involves rock climbing, boulder hopping, etc, then you would definitely enjoy this trek. I absolutely loved how the whole trek was made into a beautiful experience. I am glad to have taken this package.

Very good option for trekking and camping. Beautiful scenery with snow capped Himalayas in the backdrop, exquisite meadows, refreshing springs en route. Spent a memorable trip. wanted the sheer joy of being etherized to the core by the beauty of the unknown. Trekkers can also explore this park area as its one of the richest biological parks in world. Small lodges are available with good local food.

We sped past Barshaini and we now able to view the mountain peaks from an altogether different angle - could not believe these were the same vistas that we had been viewing all day long. As the evening hues came about, the peaks turned crimson red - absolutely stunning. We were once again humbled into silen

We treaded slowly so as to enjoy the views around and capture as many clicks as possible and eventually reached the Barshaini village - I was very envious of the people inhabiting this place. They were virtually in the lap of nature - the village was nestled below the huge expanse of snow-capped (virtually a 150o span from left to right) and the mighty Pravati joined by other tributaries way below. In addition to the views on the right side, one could also witness the Parvati glacier on the extreme left - just a glimpse. The village offers mostly home-stays at very cheap prices. These mostly cater to the trekking folks who eventually venture to Tosh (to & fro). Also there are a lot taxis available for hire for a one/ two way trip to Tosh.

Kinnaur Kailash Parikrma Trek is one of the best treks I had known about. Trekking Himalayas is no longer a distant dream. There are many moderate level challenging treks that are available in trek packs to trekking enthusiasts. We, some of the Chennai Trekkers, took this trek and it was amazing. The trek was definitely tedious and exhausting, but we did make it to the top and back. It was a spellbinding experience. The flights were costly, but the trek as such is not that costly. It was a nice trek.

The fourth, fifth and sixth day were the most amazing threes of this trek! On these days, I and other members of the trek got to enjoy the blissful views of the Kull Valley, Beas Valley, the Pir Panjal Range, whispering meadows, Indrasan Glacier and the Alain river. Finally, on the ninth day, we made it to the Hampta Pass. Anyways, it a fascinating expereince for all of us from the beginning to the end.

More than the trekking part, I liked camping amidst the lofty and sno-capped peaks. For someone seeking total soliditude and peace of mind, this is a must. Starting from Lama Dugh to Bara Bhangal, I and the other group members were very excited. The routes were pretty challenging. But the time spent in the Bara Bhangal made us forget all the pains to reach there.
