Best Time to Visit Iceland?

The best time to visit Iceland depends on what you want to experience, whether it’s for the Midnight Sun, Northern Lights, or snow-covered landscapes. Thrillophilia's well-planned Iceland tour packages cater to each season, ensuring a proper and memorable experience for Indian travellers.

Summer (June to August) Peak Midnight Sun & Peak Exploration

Summer is the most popular time to visit Iceland, especially for first-time visitors and families. During this period, you can experience the midnight sun, where daylight lasts up to 24 hours, allowing you to explore more in a single day.

This season aligns perfectly with the Indian school summer holiday (May-June), making it an ideal time for family vacations.

  • Comfortable temperatures ranging from 10 °C to 15 °C
  • You can expect green landscapes, wildflowers and active wildlife like puffins.
  • There is easy access to major attractions, including the Highlands.

Thrillophilia offers summer itineraries that maximise daylight hours, covering 10-12 attractions in 5-7 days, making it a highly efficient travel window.

Autumn (September to October)

Autumn marks the transition into Northern Lights season while still offering relatively mild weather. This is a great time for travellers who want a balance between sightseeing and aurora experiences.

Our highlights include:

  • Literally the first Northern Lights sightings of the season.
  • Golden landscapes and fewer crowds.
  • Better availability and pricing compared to the peak summer packages

Thrillophilia’s packages during the winters are designed with at least 2-3 Northern Lights viewing opportunities, increasing your chances of witnessing this phenomenon.

Winters (November to March)

Winter is the peak season for sighting the famous Northern Lights, making it one of the best times to visit Iceland. While temperatures can drop below 0 °C, the experience is truly unmatched.

What makes winters in Iceland so special:

  • Best visibility for Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights).
  • Perfect time to visit the ice caves, glaciers and snow activities.
  • A beautiful snow-covered landscape, making it very dramatic.

Thrillophilia's winter itineraries include guided tours, thermal stays (perfectly heated), and dedicated aurora-viewing excursions, ensuring both safety and experience optimisation.

Spring (April - May )

Spring is a hidden gem for travellers looking for fewer crowds and better deals. As snow begins to melt, Iceland’s waterfalls are at their most powerful.

Key advantages:

  • Prices stay comparatively lower during this season than during the peak season.
  • Waterfalls are at peak flow due to snowmelt during this season.
  • Major tourist attractions are less crowded, making it perfect for travel.

This is ideal for couples or budget-conscious travellers opting for customisable Iceland packages from India, flexible itineraries and better hotel availability.

For the estimate, it takes

  • Distance from Reykjavik: 50 km
  • Time to spend: 2-3 hours (if exploring)
  • Entry cost: Free

13. Arnarstapi

Arnarstapi is a charming coastal village that is located on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, recognised for its rugged cliffs and natural rock formations. It’s ideal for short walks along the coastline, offering stunning views of arches, seabirds and the dramatic Atlantic waves.

  • Distance from Reykjavik: 190 km
  • Time to spend: 1-2 hours
  • Entry cost: Free

13. Ring Road

The Ring Road is also known as Route 1. It is Iceland’s most iconic road trip, which circles the entire island and covers approximately 1,332 kms. It is the best way to experience the country in depth and is typically included in longer Iceland tour packages by Thrillophilia for travellers with more time.

While you are on this route, you might encounter some of Iceland’s most dramatic landscapes, including the massive Vatnajökull (Europe's largest glacier) and the stunning Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, and the nearby Diamond Beach, where ice chunks wash up on the black sand. Further along this route, you get the Myvatn geothermal area, which offers bubbling mud pools and volcanic terrain, while Akureyri provides a charming northern city stop. This route also connects to remote regions like the Westfjords for those looking to explore beyond the usual paths of the city.

The Ring Road can be covered fully in 7 days and becomes an essential route during winters, but for a more relaxed and immersive experience, 10-14 days are ideal. A 4WD vehicle is highly recommended here; rentals start from INR 6,000 to INR 12,000 per day. Although you don’t have to worry about this, as Thrillophilia covers all the on-trip transfers.

Overall, the Ring Road is the ultimate Iceland experience and is ideal for travellers who want to go beyond the usual highlights of Iceland and go explore the entire country in detail and the country at their own pace.

14. Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights)

The Aurora Borealis is the number one reason why most Indian travellers travel to Iceland, and it is literally magical to witness. The lights are caused by solar wind charged particles interacting with Earth’s magnetic field, which is why sightings can never be guaranteed. Even with the best planning, nature is not in our control.

The best time to see the Northern Lights is between mid-September and mid-March; during this time, nights are usually longer and darker. The peak window for seeing the Northern Lights is December to February, offering the highest chances due to extended darkness. However, visibility depends heavily on natural conditions like clear skies, low light pollution and minimal moonlight.

Thrillophilia tip: Use the Vedur Iceland app; it provides real-time aurora borealis forecasts and cloud cover updates.

If you are staying in Reykjavik, you don’t always have to travel far. Spots like the Grotta lighthouse, Reykjanes Peninsula, and Pingvellir National Park offer good visibility away from the city. For a more dramatic view and better chances, locations like Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon (light reflects on water here), the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and Akureyri are perfect.

Thrillophilia’s Iceland tour packages include at least 2-3 aurora hunting nights, which generally increases the chances of sighting the Aurora Borealis. With the right planning and a bit of patience, witnessing the Northern Lights can easily become the literal highlight of your Iceland journey.

Thrillophilia Traveller Note:

Pihu Nair, a traveller from Jaipur, who booked the Escape to Iceland | Waterfalls, Wonders, and Aurora Lights, said, “Iceland is an amazing place for anyone who loves nature and peaceful surroundings. The landscapes are breathtaking, with waterfalls, glaciers, and wide open views all around. Everything feels well-organised and easy for travellers. It’s a great destination to unwind and experience something completely different from busy cities.”

15. Solar Eclipse - August (Solar Eclipse)

A rare celestial event is going to occur in Iceland this year. Between 12 and 15 August 2026, Iceland will witness a total solar eclipse. This highlight would be perfectly viewed from the scenic Snæfellsnes Peninsula.

What makes this event so extraordinary is its rarity. The next total solar eclipse that will be visible from Iceland will occur in the year 2196, making this a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for travellers who are planning their trip in 2026.

The Snæfellsnes Peninsula is considered one of the best viewing locations not just for its position in the eclipse path but also for its dramatic landscapes, including the Snæfellsjökull glacier, which is famously associated with Jules Verne’s novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth.

Many Iceland tour packages by Thrillophilia are expected to align itineraries, keeping this event as the main highlight and thus giving you a perfect combination of the solar eclipse and other highlights like the Northern Lights, Golden Circle and South Coast. If you’re planning a trip in 2026, this is a unique opportunity to experience Iceland at a truly historic moment.

How to Reach Iceland From India?

To reach Iceland from India, there is a requirement of connecting flights, as there are no direct flights to Iceland from India. Travellers usually arrive at Keflavik International Airport, which is Iceland’s main international airport and is located almost 50 km away from Reykjavik. From the airport, Thrillophilia provides a proper transfer to your hotel, so you don’t need to worry about your commute once you reach Iceland. Given Iceland’s remote geographic location, all flight routes from India involve 1-2 layovers to reach there; normally, for the smoothest connectivity, the layovers are at major European or Middle Eastern hubs, with travel time ranging from 14 to 18 hours approximately.

Flight Details (India to Iceland)

  • There are no direct flights from India to Iceland
  • All routes require at least 1-2 layovers.
  • Flights like Air India (code-share on former Vistara routes), Lufthansa, KLM, and Swiss operate from the European hubs.
  • Flights like Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Turkish Airlines operate via Middle Eastern hubs (often the most cost-effective option)
  • Finnair operates from Helsinki, the closest European hub to Reykjavik.
  • The average total time that it takes to reach Iceland is 14 - 18 hours.
  • Flights are available from all major Indian cities, such as Delhi and Mumbai.
  • Approximate round-trip cost: INR 55,000 - INR 90,000, depending on the season and the booking window you choose.

Iceland Visa Requirements for Indian Visitors

Iceland is a part of the Schengen Area, so Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa for their Iceland trip. This visa also allows you to travel across all 29 Schengen countries, making it really convenient for multi-country European trips. Applications for the visa can be submitted through authorised centres only, like VFS Global or BLS International in India, which depend on the current processing arrangement.

The visa fee may vary, so it is best to check the latest charges on the official VFS Global India website before applying for it. The process of confirmation usually takes 15-30 days, so applying in advance is highly recommended.

Several bank documents are needed, such as cover letters, recent bank statements, hotel bookings, flight itineraries and travel insurance with a minimum coverage of INR 30 lakh. Salaried applicants must also submit a leave letter, while self-employed individuals only need an NOC with their ITR proof.

The visa normally gets issued within 30-90 days with a single or double entry, and that depends completely upon the travel plan.

Vegetarian Food Guide For Indian Travellers

Iceland’s cuisine is mainly based on meat and seafood, which can make things slightly challenging for vegetarian travellers. However, in Reykjavik, you will find a growing number of vegetarian restaurants and many vegan options in the city’s central area. Restaurants like Gló, Loving Hut, and Astur-Indiafjelagiǒ offer vegetarian foods and Indian dishes too.

Common safe options to eat include skyr, which is a yoghurt-like dairy product; fresh bread; cheese; salads; and vegetable soups, which are available in all the cafes and supermarkets. Outside Reykjavik, the rural areas really lack vegetarian options, so carrying snacks like dry fruits and instant meals or ready-to-eat food is very important.

Also, be aware that whale meat is often marketed as a local speciality for tourists. It is ethically sensitive, and travellers can choose to avoid it.

We had an amazing time at Finland and Norway! Kudos to Thrillophilia team for putting together a wonderful, easily accessible, and awesome itinerary! We were looking for an experience that would let us see more natural beauty and other activities which we won't get in India. For example, the train from Helsinki to Rovaniemi, the Sojnefjord cruise in Norway, staying in a remote fishing village, etc. The team completely understood our expectations and curated an itinerary that helped us explore at our own pace while at the same time saved the hassle of minute level of planning and booking actvities. The travel and activities were nicely planned... Read More

Northern lights over Iceland was on my bucket list for ten years finally ticked off and it exceeded every expectation. The waterfalls and black sand beaches during the day were equally jaw-dropping.

A wonderful Scandinavian combination that let us experience both Finland and Iceland in a single itinerary. The contrast between Finland's forest silence and Iceland's volcanic drama was remarkable. The Northern Lights viewing sessions were well-organised and our guide knew exactly how to read the forecast. A minor logistical delay at one airport but it was handled gracefully by the team.

April is the tail end of aurora season in Iceland and we were lucky to catch one strong display near Vik on Night 3. The glacier lagoon at Jokulsarlon had large icebergs floating toward the black sand beach which looked completely unreal. Seljalandsfoss waterfall you can walk behind was one of those experiences that photographs genuinely cannot capture. Thrillophilia had built flexibility into the itinerary to account for Iceland's unpredictable weather which turned out to be a good call on two of the days. Solo trip and not a single moment felt disorganised or unsafe.

Iceland solo trip from Delhi, first solo international and Thrillophilia made it completely stress-free. The Ring Road itinerary covered waterfalls, geysers, black sand beaches and the Blue Lagoon in 8 days. Having all transfers pre-arranged meant I could focus entirely on soaking in the landscape. Absolutely magical country.

Yaar Iceland bilkul mind-blowing rahi, sach mein another planet ka feel tha! Midnight sun concept took some getting used to but was absolutely amazing. Blue Lagoon was so relaxing after days of adventure activities. The landscapes look completely unreal, photos don't do it justice at all. Highly recommend for adventurous couples!

Iceland Tour faqs

Can I see black sand beaches in Iceland?

Yes, Iceland is famous for black sand beaches, especially around Vik on the South Coast, where volcanic landscapes create dramatic scenery.

Thrillophilia Tip: Stay alert near the shoreline because waves can be unexpectedly strong.

Are cash payments commonly used in Iceland?

No, Iceland is almost completely cashless, and card payments are accepted almost everywhere, including small cafés, buses, and parking areas.

Thrillophilia Tip: Carry an international debit or credit card with contactless payment enabled for convenience.

Is Iceland suitable for solo women travellers?

Yes, Iceland is considered one of the safest destinations for solo women travellers because of its low crime rate and well-developed tourism infrastructure.

Is Iceland expensive for Indian travellers?

Yes, Iceland is quite expensive compared to most travel destinations. You will notice higher costs for hotels, food, transport, and activities. Even a simple meal can feel pricey. However, the experiences here are very unique, from glaciers to waterfalls and the Northern Lights, which makes the overall trip worth it.

Thrillophilia Tip: Plan a mix of paid activities and free natural attractions like waterfalls and beaches to manage your budget better.

Do I need travel insurance for Iceland?

Yes, travel insurance is mandatory for a Schengen visa and must have a minimum coverage of €30,000 (INR 32,76,435). It is also useful because medical expenses and emergencies can be very costly in Iceland.

Thrillophilia Tip: Choose a plan that also covers adventure activities like glacier hiking and snowmobiling.

Are restaurants in Iceland expensive for tourists?

Yes, dining in Iceland can be costly, especially in tourist areas where even simple meals are priced much higher than in India.

Thrillophilia Tip: Choose lunch specials or supermarket meals if you want to reduce daily food expenses.

What is the best time to visit Iceland?

The best time depends on what you want to experience. Summer, from June to August, offers long daylight hours and is great for road trips and sightseeing. Winter, from November to March, is ideal for Northern Lights, snow-covered landscapes, and ice caves.

Thrillophilia Tip: If your main goal is to see the Northern Lights, plan at least 3 to 4 nights to increase your chances.

Are hot springs open throughout the year in Iceland?

Yes, many geothermal hot springs and lagoons remain open throughout the year, including during winter when bathing becomes especially popular.

Thrillophilia Tip: Book popular lagoon entries in advance, especially during peak travel months.

What should I pack for Iceland?

Packing properly is very important because the weather can change quickly. You should carry thermal wear, waterproof jackets, gloves, and sturdy shoes. Windproof clothing is also very useful.

Thrillophilia Tip: Wear layers so you can easily adjust to changing weather conditions throughout the day.

Can I use my Indian mobile network in Iceland?

Yes, Indian mobile networks such as Jio, Airtel, and Vi usually work in Iceland through international roaming, as these providers offer global roaming services in most European countries. However, roaming charges for calls, mobile data, and SMS can be quite expensive, especially if you frequently use maps, social media, or video calls during your trip.

Thrillophilia Tip: Buying a local SIM card or eSIM is often more economical if you are staying for several days.

Is Iceland crowded during the summer?

Yes, summer is the busiest travel season in Iceland because of pleasant weather and long daylight hours, especially around major tourist attractions.

Is Iceland safe for travellers?

Yes, Iceland is one of the safest countries in the world with very low crime rates. The only thing you need to be careful about is nature, as weather conditions can change quickly, and some natural sites can be risky.

Thrillophilia Tip: Always follow safety signs, especially near waterfalls and beaches, where conditions can change suddenly.
