Best Time to Visit Meghalaya

The ideal time to visit Meghalaya depends on the experiences you wish to enjoy. It also depends on the type of weather you prefer and whether it's a good time for adventure, relaxation, or cultural immersion.

Peak Season (October-February)

  • Weather: The days are cool and dry, with temperatures ranging between 5°C and 15°C, making them perfect for outdoor activities.
  • Activities to Enjoy: You can enjoy sightseeing in Meghalaya, trekking at the living root bridges, boating, exploring limestone caves, visiting waterfalls, and photographing scenic landscapes. Since this is the peak time to visit, you will find heavy footfall at the popular attractions.

Shoulder Season (March-June)

  • Weather: The days are slightly warm with chances of occasional light rain from May, as these are the pre-monsoon months. Temperatures range between 15°C and 25°C, so exploring the outdoors will feel pleasant.
  • Activities to Enjoy: Apart from sightseeing, trekking, and boating, you can include nature walks, museum tours, and market strolls in your Meghalaya travel packages.

Monsoon Season (July-September)

  • Weather: These are the monsoon months, which means heavy rainfall across Meghalaya. Cherrapunji and Mawsynram are the wettest places on earth and get maximum rainfall in this period. Travelling becomes difficult in such weather, as the roads flood and landslides become frequent. The weather remains cool as temperatures range between 12°C and 20°C.
  • Activities to Enjoy: You can indulge in Ayurvedic retreats and indoor activities like museum tours. If you are up for some adventure, these months are the best time to see Meghalaya’s waterfalls at their full flow.

Tips and Safety for Travellers on Meghalaya Trip

1. Be mindful of the local customs, dress modestly, and ask for permission to take photos.

2.  Meghalaya’s roads can be winding and steep, so be ready for a bumpy ride.

3.  ATMs are scarce in rural areas, so carry some cash with you for small purchases.

4.  If you're prone to motion sickness, it’s wise to carry medication while travelling with Meghalaya tour packages.

5.  Keep the environment clean by avoiding littering, especially in natural spots and trekking routes.

6.  Internet and phone networks may be weak in remote areas, so be prepared for limited connectivity and plan accordingly.

7.  Check daily weather and rainfall forecasts, as heavy showers often trigger landslides and road closures between Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki, and Mawsynram.

8.  Carry rain jackets even in winter, since sudden drizzles occur frequently in Meghalaya’s cloud-heavy climate.

9.  Wear sturdy footwear for treks to living root bridges, as stone steps remain slippery year-round due to moisture.

10. Follow village council instructions carefully during your Meghalaya trip, as access rules differ across the Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo regions.

11. Hire a local guide for the Double Decker Living Root Bridge trek in Nongriat, as the 3,000+ stone steps become slippery after rainfall.

12. Avoid trekking remote trails alone, and hire village guides for safe navigation and river crossings.

Meghalaya genuinely feels like a different country the living root bridges, the Dawki river and Cherrapunji waterfalls. This six-day package covered all the best spots without ever feeling rushed or overcrowded. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to explore India beyond the usual tourist trail.

Meghalaya Scenic Trails was the most visually stunning domestic trip I have taken in years. The double-decker living root bridge trek is genuinely one of India's greatest natural wonders. Waterfalls around every corner, misty hills and incredibly friendly locals made every day special. Came back completely recharged this one stays with you long after you return home.

Meghalaya super-a irukku, romba nalla experience thumba! Living root bridges are unlike anything you will see anywhere else on this earth. Cherrapunji's waterfalls during the season were absolutely magnificent. Kandipa worth the long journey to get there. Only wished we had one more free day to explore at our own pace. Will come back for longer!
