Situated at a staggering height of 14,500 feet above sea level, Sarchu is nestled on the border of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal. Surrounded by extraordinary natural beauty, this congenial stopover point is located exactly halfway between the Baralacha La Pass and Lachulung La pass. This little town is generally considered as a rest stop while travelling to and from Leh to Manali.

The town of Sarchu is surrounded by snow-laden peaks and scenic walking or trekking routes, and its beauty attracts travellers from around the world. A number of ridges and gorges line the barren beauty of the place, while frozen rivers zigzag through the picturesque location.

The little towns of Jispa and Keylong offer the rustic beauty of small towns on the foothills of Himalayas. These towns also offer a number of different adventure sport opportunities, especially that of mountaineering or trekking.

One of the most popular attractions here is the Tsokar Lake, a glacial lake in the heart of the Himalayas. Owing to its high salinity, the lake water here is completely white, thus giving Tsokar the nickname of the “White Lake”. The Lake area is also rich in endemic animal life, making it a popular spot for wildlife enthusiasts.

If you are an adventure enthusiast, Sarchu is one of the best places to visit in Himachal- the town boasts of a number of challenging trekking trails, that takes trekkers across scenic routes and gorges. It is also home to one of the largest trekking routes in the Himalayas, the Zanskar trek, which takes several days to complete. The town also provides hiking opportunities along the various hiking trails found here.

The summer months in Sarchu between April to September experiences pleasant and cool climate, which is ideal for activities such as hiking or trekking. The monsoon months between heavy rainfall, especially during the months of July and August. The winter months, between October to March, experience extremely low temperatures. The region remains covered in snow during this time, and temperatures may fall to -35 degree Celsius.
