Fort George is 42 acres and was designed to provide all the facilities. It consists of a comprehensive range of buildings to accommodate the Governor and officers, the artillery detachment, and a large infantry garrison. The fort is also known to have a bakehouse, brew house chapel, powder magazine, a provisions store, and an ordnance store. The castle is made up of red sandstone and displays a castellated style and you can see the remains of its original bastion wall. The castle today serves as the Sheriff’s Court but was originally built as a prison. The castle was constructed in the 11th century, and the original castle was destroyed by the Jacobites in 1746.
