Had an absolutely phenomenal experience on our Kerala tour with Thrillophilia! The entire booking process was smooth, and the execution was completely hassle-free. The itinerary covered the perfect mix of Munnar’s beautiful hill stations, the amazing Periyar boat safari cruise in Thekkady, Alleppey's iconic houseboat backwaters, and the breathtaking Kovalam Sea Beach. The hotels were excellent, the food was delicious, and our dedicated driver was polite, always on time, and guided us to some amazing local hidden gems. Thank you, Thrillophilia, for your outstanding hospitality and for organizing a flawless vacation. Our hearts are so full as we look back on this incredible journey. A massive, soulful thank you to the Thrillophilia team for making our dreams a reality. To Anshika, your unwavering support was our safety net; we truly couldn't have navigated this without your constant care. And to Ansari Bhai, you weren't just a guide—you were like family. Your patience, kindness, and 'never-say-no' attitude turned every moment into a treasure. You’ve given us memories we will carry with us forever.

Even though we are from Kerala we had never done a proper tourist trip within the state. Thrillophilia planned it beautifully. Athirappilly waterfalls at its most powerful, Kovalam beach at sunset, Padmanabhaswamy temple darshan. Felt like seeing our own home with fresh eyes.

Kerala trip from Bhopal through Thrillophilia. Kerala is totally different from our city. Too much greenery everywhere. Munnar was best part. Weather cool, roads full of tea gardens. Long drive but didn’t feel boring. Driver Shaji was helpful, stopped at few good points without us asking. Alleppey houseboat was slow but nice experience. Just sitting, eating, watching outside. Everything was managed properly. No confusion at any point. Good trip overall.

Good Kerala experience with Thrillophilia. The houseboat was comfortable and the crew very attentive. Thekkady jeep safari was a fun add-on. One resort in Munnar had a slight room issue but the team sorted it quickly. Would recommend for families looking for a relaxed Kerala break.

Kerala was not even our first choice in the beginning, but it ended up being the trip we needed most. After a busy few months, we wanted somewhere that didn’t feel rushed. Kerala gave exactly that. The greenery, the slower pace, even the drives between places had a different kind of charm. Munnar was easily our favorite stop. The weather was pleasant, and waking up to those tea garden views felt unreal after spending so much time in city traffic back home. Thanks to Thrillophilia team and Tancy our driver for such a memorable trip

Kerala was on our list for years and Thrillophilia delivered beyond what we expected. Munnar was misty and green in a way that photographs cannot capture. The tea estate walk in the early morning with no other tourists around was something special. Alleppey houseboat was deeply peaceful. Fresh fish curry on a banana leaf while floating through the backwaters is Kerala distilled into one meal. The entire route was well structured with no unnecessarily long driving days. Our driver knew the roads personally. The team had communicated all dietary preferences in advance with every property. Perfect trip.

What Does a Kerala Package Actually Include? (And What Doesn't)

Many travellers focus on the package price without checking what it includes. While most Kerala tour packages cover accommodation, sightseeing, and transfers, some expenses are usually excluded. Knowing the inclusions and exclusions beforehand can help you plan your Kerala trip budget better.

What Is Usually Included

  • Verified hotel stays based on the chosen category
  • Private airport or station transfers
  • Intercity travel by private vehicle
  • Guided sightseeing at major destinations
  • Houseboat stay in Alleppey (when listed in itinerary)
  • Selected meals, usually breakfast
  • 24/7 on-trip assistance

Note: All accommodation partners used in our Kerala packages are verified for safety, hygiene, and comfort standards.

What Is Usually Not Included

  • Flights to Kerala
  • Entry fees for attractions (INR 50 to INR 500 per site)
  • Personal shopping expenses
  • Travel insurance
  • Meals not mentioned in the itinerary
  • Driver or guide tips

Flight tip: Booking three to four weeks before travel usually saves 20 to 30% compared to last-minute fares. Airlines on these routes include IndiGo, Air India Express, SpiceJet, and Akasa Air.

How Much Does a Kerala Trip Really Cost in 2026?

The price of a Kerala tour package is only part of your overall travel budget. While most packages include accommodation, local transfers, and sightseeing, some experiences and personal expenses may cost extra. Understanding these additional costs can help you choose the right package and plan your trip more effectively.

Houseboat Upgrades in Alleppey: Many Kerala tour packages include a houseboat stay, but the category may vary. Deluxe houseboats may cost INR 6,000–10,000 per night for two people, while premium and luxury options can range from INR 10,000–25,000+.

Flights to Kerala: Most Kerala tour packages are land-only and do not include airfare. Round-trip flight fares from major Indian cities generally range between INR 5,000 and INR 14,000 per person.

Periyar Boat Safari: While visits to Thekkady are commonly included in Kerala itineraries, the boat safari at Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is often an optional activity with separate ticket charges ranging from INR 225 to INR 1,500 per person.

Meals Beyond Package Inclusions: Many packages include breakfast, while lunches and dinners are usually at an additional cost. Travellers can budget around INR 500–1,500 per person per day for meals.

Cultural Activities: Popular experiences such as Kathakali performances and traditional cultural shows may not always be included in the package price. Tickets may cost INR 200–500 per person.

Personal Expenses and Tips: Shopping, optional activities, and tips for drivers, guides, or houseboat staff are usually not covered in Kerala tour packages and should be budgeted separately.

Peak Season Surcharges: Package prices are generally based on standard travel dates. If you plan to visit during the peak holiday season between late December and early January, rates for hotels, houseboats, and other services may be 15–30% higher than usual.

Thrillophilia Note: Checking the package inclusions carefully before booking can help you estimate the total cost of your Kerala holiday and choose the package that best suits your budget and travel preferences.

How to Reach Kerala: Flights, Trains, and Road Routes

Kerala is well connected to the rest of India through four international airports, an extensive railway network, and a strong network of national highways.

By Air

Kerala has four international airports: Kochi (Cochin International Airport), Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, Calicut International Airport (Kozhikode), and Kannur International Airport. Most travellers fly into Kochi, which is the most convenient entry point for the classic Munnar-Alleppey-Thekkady circuit.

Approximate one-way fares: Delhi INR 7,385 to INR 10,600 (approx. 3 hours). Mumbai INR 4,870 to INR 8,000 (approx. 1 hour 50 minutes). Bangalore INR 4,045 to INR 6,500 (approx. 1 hour 10 minutes). Kolkata INR 8,275 to INR 12,000 (approx. 3 hours 15 minutes). Chennai INR 5,267 to INR 7,500 (approx. 1 hour 25 minutes). Airlines include IndiGo, Air India Express, SpiceJet, and Akasa Air.

By Train

Kerala sits along India's dense coastal railway corridor. Key trains include the Rajdhani Express (Delhi to Thiruvananthapuram) and the Duronto Express (Mumbai to Ernakulam). Overnight journeys reduce travel fatigue and are a practical option for travellers from northern cities.

By Road

Road travel suits those already in South India. Bangalore to Kochi is approximately 10 hours via NH275. Madurai to Thekkady is roughly 4 hours through mountain roads. Hill routes may be slow during the monsoon. Starting drives early avoids both rain and traffic.

Where to Go: Kerala's 6 Travel Zones Explained

One of the reasons Kerala is so popular with travellers is its remarkable diversity. Within a relatively small area, visitors can experience scenic mountain landscapes, wildlife reserves, serene backwaters, tropical beaches, historic port cities, and vibrant cultural traditions. Most Kerala itineraries combine two to four regions, with road journeys between major destinations usually taking no more than four to five hours. This makes it possible to experience different sides of the state without spending long hours in transit.

Understanding Kerala's main travel regions will help you choose destinations that match your interests, travel style, and available time.

1. Hill Stations: Munnar, Wayanad, and Vagamon

Kerala's hill region lies along the Western Ghats, a UNESCO-recognised mountain range known for its rich biodiversity and cooler climate. These high-altitude landscapes provide a refreshing contrast to the state's tropical coastline and are often included at the beginning of a Kerala itinerary.

Munnar is Kerala's most visited hill station and is renowned for its tea estates, mountain views, and pleasant year-round weather. The region is also home to Eravikulam National Park, which protects the endangered Nilgiri Tahr, a species found only in the Western Ghats. Visitors should note that the park closes annually from 1 February to 31 March during the breeding season.

Wayanad offers a more nature-focused experience. Dense forests, waterfalls, trekking routes, wildlife habitats, and the ancient Edakkal Caves make it appealing to outdoor enthusiasts and travellers seeking fewer crowds.

Vagamon is one of Kerala's quieter hill destinations. Its open meadows, pine forests, and paragliding opportunities attract visitors looking for a peaceful alternative to the state's busier tourist centres.

2. Backwaters and Lakes: Alleppey and Kumarakom

Kerala's backwaters are one of the state's most famous attractions. This network of canals, rivers, lakes, and lagoons stretches across much of the coastline and plays an important role in local life, farming, and tourism.

Alleppey (Alappuzha) is widely regarded as the heart of Kerala's backwater tourism. Traditional houseboats cruise through palm-lined waterways, offering visitors a close look at village life and local culture. The city is also known for hosting the internationally recognised Nehru Trophy Boat Race, one of India's most famous rowing events.

Kumarakom, located on the shores of Vembanad Lake, provides a quieter and more resort-oriented experience. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary attracts numerous resident and migratory bird species, making it a popular destination for birdwatchers and nature lovers.

Traveller’s Note: Choose Alleppey if you want to enjoy a houseboat ride. If you prefer a calm and peaceful stay by the lake, Kumarakom is a great option.

3. Wildlife and Spice Country: Thekkady and Periyar

Located in Kerala's highlands, Thekkady is best known as the gateway to Periyar Tiger Reserve, one of South India's most important protected wildlife areas. Covering approximately 925 square kilometres, the reserve is home to elephants, Indian bison, deer, numerous bird species, and a range of other wildlife.

Boat safaris on Periyar Lake provide one of the best opportunities to observe animals in their natural habitat. Although tigers inhabit the reserve, sightings are rare due to the dense forest area. Wildlife viewing is generally most rewarding between February and April when animals gather around water sources.

The region is equally famous for its spice plantations. Guided tours allow visitors to learn how cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, and other spices are cultivated, harvested, and processed. These plantations offer valuable insight into one of Kerala's most important agricultural industries.

4. Coastal Kerala: Kovalam, Varkala, Marari, and Cherai

Kerala has over 550 kilometres of coastline, offering a mix of lively beach towns, relaxing seaside destinations, and quiet fishing villages.

Kovalam is one of Kerala's well-known beach destinations. Its crescent-shaped shoreline, Ayurveda wellness centres, surfing opportunities, and family-friendly infrastructure make it a popular choice for both domestic and international visitors.

Varkala stands apart as the only major cliff-backed beach destination in South India. Visitors can enjoy panoramic sea views from cliff-top cafés, yoga retreats, and walking paths overlooking the Arabian Sea.

For a peaceful beach experience, Marari Beach is a great choice. It has a calm atmosphere and is home to a traditional fishing village. Cherai Beach, near Kochi, is famous for the place where the backwaters meet the sea and for its historic Chinese fishing nets.

5. Kochi and Fort Kochi: Kerala's Cultural Gateway

Kochi is often the first stop for travellers visiting Kerala. It is a historic port city that has been influenced by traders from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia for centuries.

The Fort Kochi area is known for its mix of Portuguese, Dutch, and British architecture. Popular attractions include the Chinese fishing nets, Mattancherry Palace, and the Paradesi Synagogue, one of the oldest active synagogues in the Commonwealth.

Kochi is also a major centre for modern art. The Kochi Muziris Biennale, held every two years, is Asia's largest contemporary art festival and attracts visitors from around the world. Most travellers spend at least a full day exploring the city's history, culture, and attractions.

6. North Kerala: Kannur, Kasaragod, and Kozhikode

Often overlooked by first-time visitors, North Kerala offers a more authentic and less crowded travel experience. The region combines rich cultural traditions, historical landmarks, and coastal scenery while generally remaining more affordable than Kerala's southern tourist circuit.

Kannur is internationally recognised for Theyyam, a centuries-old ritual art form that combines dance, music, storytelling, and elaborate costumes. Unlike staged performances, Theyyam remains an active religious tradition performed in local temples and village shrines.

Kasaragod is home to Bekal Fort, the largest fort in Kerala. Overlooking the Arabian Sea, the fort is one of the state's most impressive historical landmarks and offers spectacular coastal views.

Kozhikode (Calicut) holds an important place in Indian history as the region where Vasco da Gama first arrived in 1498. Today, it is known for its rich culinary heritage, lively markets, and status as the cultural heart of the Malabar coast.

Which Region Is Right for You?

Each region of Kerala offers something unique. The hill stations are known for their cool climate and beautiful mountain views. The backwaters are famous for houseboat cruises, while wildlife reserves give visitors a chance to experience Kerala's rich natural beauty. The coastal areas offer relaxing beaches, Kochi is full of history and culture, and North Kerala is known for its lesser-known traditions and scenic landscapes.

For first-time visitors, exploring three or four of these regions is a great way to experience the best of what Kerala has to offer.

Ayurveda in Kerala: What a Wellness Retreat Looks Like

Ayurveda is an important part of Kerala's culture and wellness traditions. Across the state, you'll find certified practitioners, specialised wellness centres, and accredited treatment facilities offering a wide range of therapies. Many visitors choose to include an Ayurveda session in their Kerala itinerary to relax and rejuvenate.

The monsoon season (June to September) is traditionally considered the best time for Ayurvedic treatments, as the humid weather is believed to help the body absorb herbal oils more effectively.

Popular Ayurvedic Treatments

Abhyanga (Full-Body Oil Massage): A relaxing massage using warm herbal oils to help improve circulation and relieve stress. Popular in Kovalam, Varkala, and Kumarakom. The sessions cost between INR 1,500 and INR 4,000.

October to February: Best Weather and Peak Tourist Season

This is the most popular time to visit Kerala. Temperatures usually range between 22°C and 30°C, making it comfortable for sightseeing, houseboat cruises, wildlife safaris, and beach holidays. Most attractions remain fully accessible, and travel conditions are generally excellent.

The Kochi Muziris Biennale, Asia's largest contemporary art festival, is also held during this period in festival years.

If you plan to visit between 20 December and 5 January, book well in advance as this is Kerala's busiest travel period. Hotel rates can increase by 30–50%, and accommodations often sell out several months ahead.

One thing to note is that Eravikulam National Park remains closed from 1 February to 31 March for the breeding season of the Nilgiri Tahr.

March to May: Ideal for Hill Stations

Summer brings warmer temperatures, especially along the coast, where temperatures can reach 33°C to 38°C. However, popular hill stations such as Munnar and Wayanad remain much cooler, with temperatures generally between 20°C and 28°C.

This is a great time for travellers who want to explore Kerala's mountain regions. Wildlife sightings in places like Periyar Tiger Reserve can also improve during this season, as animals gather around water sources.

June to September: Monsoon Season

The monsoon transforms Kerala into a lush green landscape filled with flowing rivers and scenic waterfalls. Many travellers choose this season for its peaceful atmosphere and lower prices, with tour packages often costing 20–30% less than during winter.

Monsoon is also considered the best season for Ayurveda treatments and wellness retreats, as the humid weather is traditionally believed to enhance the effectiveness of oil-based therapies.

Travellers heading to hill regions should be aware that heavy rainfall can occasionally affect road conditions. Starting journeys early in the day is generally recommended to avoid both rain and traffic.

Is Kerala Safe? Essential Travel Tips for 2026

Kerala is widely regarded as one of India's safest and most visitor-friendly destinations. Good tourism infrastructure, high literacy rates, and well-developed transport networks make it an easy place to explore. Keeping a few practical tips in mind will help ensure a smooth trip.

Choose Registered Houseboats: If you're booking a houseboat in Alleppey, look for a KIV (Kerala Inland Vessels) registration number displayed on the boat. This indicates compliance with safety requirements, including life jackets and licensed crew members.

Solo Travel is Common: Kerala is a popular destination for solo travellers, including women travelling alone. As with any destination, it is best to stay in well-reviewed accommodations and avoid isolated areas late at night.

Check Road Conditions During Monsoon: Heavy rains can occasionally affect roads in hill regions such as Wayanad, Munnar, and Idukki. Checking local travel updates before long drives during the monsoon season is recommended.

Follow Temple Dress Codes: Some temples have strict entry requirements. For example, Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram requires men to wear a dhoti and women to wear traditional attire such as a saree or long skirt.

Pay Attention to Beach Safety Flags: Always follow local safety warnings when visiting beaches. Avoid entering the water when red flags are displayed, particularly at beaches known for strong currents, such as Varkala, Kovalam, and Cherai.

Prepare for Humid Weather: Kerala's tropical climate can feel humid, especially for first-time visitors. Lightweight cotton clothing, sunscreen, and staying hydrated will help you stay comfortable throughout your trip.
