The ‘Cultural Immersion in Sri Lanka’ was our third trip through thrillophilia. We received full support from the team, especially Sunny. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour. All the hotels booked were good, but were little away from the cities. Foods served were also satisfactory with suitable picks. We did encounter little issues with the vehicle / local support system. The vehicle was not seen on arrival but was available after half an hour wait with the help from thrillophilia team. Over all it was good tour and we enjoyed the beaches, climate, greenery, food, visit to historical and other places and have started the planning of our next tour…... Read More

Our experience was really good, all the hotels were good, the driver was friendly and helpful. The only reason I deducted one star is that we didn't get proper vegetarian food that we had already mentioned before hand. The hotels served only boiled veggies in the name of veg food. We survived majorly on bread.

Six cousins from Vizag this was our first group international trip and Sri Lanka was the perfect choice. Thrillophilia planned everything beautifully. Sigiriya rock climb was the toughest thing we did but the view from the top was absolutely worth it. The train from Ella to Kandy through the tea estates is something we keep showing people in pictures and videos. Mirissa beach for the last two days was very relaxing. Our guide was very good and kept the group together and engaged at every stop. Hotels were comfortable and well located. One small feedback the Colombo hotel could have been better for the price. Itinerary plan was excellent, customized as per what we needed. Contact persons were experienced and on time. Local guides were good and polite. Only change I would recommend is the hotel at Colombo it did not feel like the 4-star category it was listed under. Rest of the stays, especially the Ella property overlooking the tea estates, were very nice. The train from Ella to Kandy through the mist is something I keep recommending to everyone who asks.

Sri Lanka is warm, beautiful and endlessly surprising - Colombo's food scene alone was worth the trip. Bentota's beach resort was the perfect way to end a holiday that felt both cultural and deeply relaxing.

We had a comfortable and well-organized Sri Lanka trip with Thrillophilia. All three of us felt at ease throughout the journey. The Ella to Kandy train was a highlight we will not forget. Hotels were neat, driver was cooperative and the houseboat experience was wonderful. One thing was that the WhatsApp response was slightly slow on Day 3 when we had a question about the next day but it was sorted eventually. Overall very satisfied and would recommend.

The planning was thorough from the start. Sigiriya rock fortress climb was physically demanding but the view from the summit made it completely worthwhile. Ella to Kandy train through tea country was the most scenic few hours of the entire trip. Our coordinator was reachable on WhatsApp throughout and sorted a hotel room issue on Day 3 within an hour of us reporting it. Would book with Thrillophilia again for the next trip.

Sri Lanka surprised me with its density of extraordinary experiences within a small geographical area. Sigiriya's ancient rock fortress, the tea-carpeted hills of Nuwara Eliya, the temple-filled streets of Kandy, and the pristine beaches of the south coast are all within hours of each other. This itinerary captured that variety beautifully. Our guide was exceptionally knowledgeable about the island's history and made every site visit deeply meaningful.

Sri Lanka Packages

Reviewed by Thrillophilia Sri Lanka Operations Team

Updated as of April 2026

Thrillophilia’s Sri Lanka Tour Packages start from INR 28,000 per person, making it one of the most affordable international trips for Indian travellers. Sri Lanka is less than 2 hours by air from Chennai, Kochi, or Bangalore, it’s incredibly accessible.

A well-planned 7-day trip can take you from the colonial streets of Colombo to the mist-covered highlands of Ella. You can also enjoy a wildlife safari in Yala, try snorkelling and diving in Hikkaduwa or enjoy watersports in Bentota Beach.

Travellers who book a Sri Lanka tour package with flight find this especially convenient, since bundling flights with accommodation and transfers on routes usually works out more economically than piecing things together independently.

Thrillophilia’s 40+ Sri Lanka packages are designed around how Indian travellers actually like to explore. Standard itineraries include accommodation, guided sightseeing, and all transfers.

For those looking at a more private experience, luxury Sri Lanka holiday packages go up to INR 65,000 per person with beachside stays and curated excursions. Honeymoon couples choose packages around Bentota and Mirissa, while families tend to combine Colombo, Kandy, and Yala into one well-paced circuit.

The temple architecture, rice and curry meals, and the warmth of locals toward Indian visitors create a rich cultural experience. Sri Lanka tours from India have grown consistently because the island keeps delivering on what it promises.

Popular Destinations to Visit on a Sri Lanka Trip

1. Colombo

Colombo is where most Sri Lanka trips begin, and it rewards a full day of exploration before you head for other destinations. Located on the island's western coast, the city blends colonial buildings, busy markets, and calm lakes in a way that feels layered and lived in.

The Gangaramaya Temple, Galle Face promenade, and Dutch Hospital precinct are all worth your time. Book a Colombo tour package to explore the city's culture and history without missing anything important.

2. Kandy

Kandy is located roughly 121 kilometres from Colombo, about 3.5 hours by road. It is home to the Temple of the Tooth Relic, which ranks as the holiest Buddhist site in the country. It houses one of Buddhism's most sacred relics and draws pilgrims and travellers in equal numbers.

The daily puja ceremonies at dawn, noon, and evening are worth timing your visit around. Kandy Lake and the surrounding tea estates also make the city worth a visit. The Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, just 6 kilometres away, is a rewarding add-on. A Kandy tour package is an essential stop in any well-planned trip to Sri Lanka.

3. Sigiriya

Sigiriya is a 200-metre volcanic rock fortress built by King Kashyapa in 495 AD. It is Sri Lanka's single most visited landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The climb takes 90 to 120 minutes and passes ancient frescoes and the famous lion paw gateway near the summit.

Go early, since the heat builds quickly and crowds grow by 09:00 a.m. Located about 178 kilometres from Colombo, it is the perfect place to include in a Kandy-Sigiriya-Dambulla circuit. The Dambulla Cave Temple, just 15 kilometres away, is well worth combining on the same day.

As per reviews by travellers who booked with Thrillophilia, Sigiriya, Kandy, and Ella consistently rank as the most memorable stops.

3. Ella

Ella is a small highland village located 312 kilometres from Colombo, which most travellers reach by the Kandy-Ella train. This train journey is widely considered to be one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world. The route passes tea estates and mountain tunnels. You can also see the famous Nine Arch Bridge here.

The village itself is relaxed, with trails to Ella Rock and Little Adam's Peak keeping hikers occupied. An Ella tour package gives you the best of the waterfalls, tea estates, and highland walks. It is best to plan at least 2 nights here.

4. Galle

Galle is a coastal city on Sri Lanka's southwestern tip, about 130 kilometres from Colombo by road. The city is best known for its UNESCO-listed Dutch Fort (Galle Fort), but there is more to it than the fort walls alone. The streets inside are lined with colonial-era buildings, independent boutiques, and quiet cafés that make for easy, unhurried exploring.

The beach at Unawatuna, just 5 kilometres away, is one of the most popular on the southern coast and pairs well with a Galle stopover. A Galle tour package covers the city's rich history and coastal charm, making it one of the most complete stops on any Sri Lanka holiday package.

5. Nuwara Eliya

At 1,869 metres above sea level, Nuwara Eliya is located 168 kilometres from Colombo. It is noticeably cooler than the rest of Sri Lanka, averaging around 16°C in the evenings. The British colonial influence is visible in the Tudor-style buildings, golf courses, and well-kept gardens.

Hakgala Botanical Gardens and the Gregory Lake area are worth half a day each. Tea estate visits here are genuinely interesting, as most estates allow factory tours where you can follow the full process from leaf to cup.

6. Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura was Sri Lanka's first capital, located around 206 kilometres from Colombo. It was founded in the 4th century BCE and remained the seat of power for over a thousand years. The sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree and the Ruwanwelisaya Stupa show the city's deep importance in Buddhism and Sri Lankan culture.

The Jetavanaramaya is one of the tallest ancient structures in the world. Budget a full day for the archaeological zone. Hiring a bicycle at the entrance is the most practical way to cover the spread-out sites.

7. Trincomalee

At a distance of 266 kilometres from Colombo, Trincomalee is located on the country’s northeast coast. It is best visited between May and September when the East Coast sees its dry season. Nilaveli and Uppuveli beaches are quieter alternatives to the busier southern resorts.

The Koneswaram Temple, perched on a clifftop overlooking the ocean, is worth visiting in the morning. Whale and dolphin watching trips also operate from Trincomalee during the dry season, making it a strong addition to longer Sri Lanka holiday packages.

8. Jaffna

Jaffna, situated 404 kilometres from Colombo, is in the far north of Sri Lanka. It feels culturally close to Tamil Nadu, with familiar food, language and temple architecture. Jaffna Fort, Nallur Kandaswamy Temple, and the islands off the Jaffna Peninsula are the main draws.

The local Tamil cuisine is worth the trip alone for South Indian travellers. That said, accommodation options remain limited compared to the south, and the drive from Colombo takes around 6 hours.

Jaffna works best as part of a 10-day or longer Sri Lanka tour package, for travellers who enjoy exploring independently.

Thrillophilia Traveller’s note:

Places to Visit with Sri Lanka Tour Packages

As per Thrillophilia's destination expert, a well-structured Sri Lanka tour package covers cultural, coastal, and hill-country experiences within a single itinerary. Here are some popular places you should visit in Srilanka:

1. Sigiriya

Sigiriya is Sri Lanka's single most visited landmark and one of the best-preserved examples of ancient urban planning in Asia. King Kasyapa built this 200-metre granite rock fortress in 495 AD, with a palace complex at the summit accessible through the famous Lion's Paw gateway. Ancient frescoes known as the Sigiriya Damsels line the rock face on the way up, and an 8th-century mirror wall carries centuries of inscribed visitor graffiti. The climb takes 1 to 2 hours to return.

  • Location: Northern Matale District, near Dambulla, Central Province, Sri Lanka
  • Timings: 05:00 a.m. to 06:30 p.m.
  • Entry Fee: LKR 315 (approx. INR 92) per person, Free for children below 6 years

2. Yala National Park

Yala holds the world's highest concentration of leopards per square kilometre, which is reason enough to include it in any Sri Lanka tour. Beyond leopards, the park shelters Asian elephants, sloth bears, mugger crocodiles, water buffalo, and over 200 bird species. A half-day dawn jeep safari from the park entrance gives you the best sighting conditions. December to April is the ideal time to visit, when dry weather draws animals to waterholes and sightings are more reliable. The park gets crowded with jeeps in peak season. Book an operator who knows the less-visited zones within the Yala national park for a more rewarding experience.

  • Location: Hambantota/Monaragala, Southern/Uva Provinces, Sri Lanka
  • Timings: 06:00 a.m. to 06:00 p.m.
  • Entry Fee: LKR 20,500 (approx. INR 6,000) onwards (includes entry, taxes, jeep and service charges)

3. Temple of the Tooth Relic

The Temple of the Tooth Relic, known locally as Dalada Maligawa, houses one of the most sacred relics in the entire Buddhist world. It is also the primary reason Kandy holds UNESCO World Heritage status as the Sacred City of Kandy. This 16th-century temple complex sits on the shores of Kandy Lake and houses the tooth relic of the Buddha in a golden casket within the inner sanctum. During the Esala Perahera in July or August, elephants, drummers, and dancers parade through Kandy in one of Asia's grandest processions. Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, and remove shoes at the entrance. Many travellers on Sri Lanka holiday packages time their Kandy stay specifically around this temple.

  • Location: Sri Dalada Maligawa, Kandy, Sri Lanka
  • Timings: 05:30 a.m. to 08:00 p.m.
  • Entry Fee: LKR 1,890 (approx. INR 555) per adult, LKR 945 (approx. INR 277) per child

4. Gangaramaya Temple

The Gangaramaya Temple is one of Colombo's most significant religious sites, built in the 19th century and known for its striking architectural style. The main attraction is the large Buddha statue, with temple ceilings covered in paintings that depict his life story. Beyond its spiritual significance, it also houses the Sri Jinarathana Training Institute, making it both a place of worship and a centre of learning. Travellers on Sri Lanka travel packages that include Colombo almost always add this to their city day.

  • Location: 61 Sri Jinarathana Rd, Colombo 00200, Sri Lanka
  • Timings: 06:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
  • Entry Fee: LKR 300 (approx. INR 88) per adult, LKR 200 (approx. INR 58) per child

5. Sinharaja Forest Reserve

Sinharaja is Sri Lanka's last remaining stretch of tropical rainforest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The dense canopy creates a habitat found nowhere else on the island, sheltering langurs, elephants, leopards, tree frogs, hump-nosed vipers, and pit vipers. Birdwatchers come specifically for species like the Crested Drongo, Orange-Billed Babbler, Red-Faced Malkoha, and Blue Magpie, many of which are endemic to Sri Lanka. Trails here require a local guide, and the terrain gets slippery after rain. Early morning entries give the quietest and most rewarding experience.

  • Location: Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces (near Ratnapura, Deniyaya, and Kalawana), Sri Lanka
  • Timings: 06:00 a.m. to 06:00 p.m.
  • Entry Fee: LKR 2,700 (approx. INR 794) (includes a local guide)

6. Galle Dutch Fort

The Galle Dutch Fort is one of the best places to include in your Sri Lanka tour packages. The Portuguese first built this fort in 1588, and the Dutch substantially rebuilt and expanded it in 1663. The UNESCO listing recognises the Dutch-era structure, which remains one of the finest examples of European colonial fortification in Asia. The blend of South Asian and European architecture within the fort walls is what sets it apart. Intricate stonework and arched gateways sit alongside narrow streets and well-preserved Dutch-era buildings.

  • Location: Church St, Galle 80000, Sri Lanka
  • Timings: Open 24 hours
  • Entry Fee: None

7. Bundala National Park

Bundala National Park is a dedicated birdwatcher's destination, with over 200 bird species recorded here. Spread across an area of 6,216 hectares, the park comprises dunes, lagoons, marshes, and scrub. Around 50 of these are migratory species like Greater Flamingo, Wood Sandpiper, Marsh Sandpiper, Common Redshank and Little Stint. These birds arrive seasonally, drawn to the park's coastal lagoons. The varied topography also supports other wildlife, making it a worthwhile stop on southern Sri Lanka tour packages. The best birdwatching is in the early morning when activity is highest, and the light is good for photography.

  • Location: Weligatta, Bundala 82004, Sri Lanka
  • Timings: 06:00 a.m. to 06:00 p.m.
  • Entry Fee: LKR 3,500 (approx. INR 1,030) plus vehicle and service charges

8. Colombo National Museum

Built in the 19th century, the National Museum in Colombo is the largest in Sri Lanka. Its two-storey building sits within a well-maintained lawn shaded by Banyan trees. The collection includes the throne and crown of the Kandyan kings, a 4th-century Buddha statue in the lobby, demon masks, ancient carvings and relics from the colonial period, including swords and firearms. It gives a useful historical overview before heading into the cultural sites upcountry, and most travellers find a 90-minute visit sufficient.

  • Location: Sir Marcus Fernando Mawatha, Colombo 00700, Sri Lanka
  • Timings: 09:00 a.m. to 05:00 p.m.
  • Entry Fee: LKR 1,500 (approx. INR 441) per adult, LKR 750 (approx. INR 220) per child

Thrillophilia Traveller’s note:

He came back satisfied and said, “We travelled as a family with two teenagers from Pune and the itinerary had the perfect balance of culture and adventure. Yala Safari, surfing lessons in Weligama, and the Dambulla caves - the kids were thoroughly engaged. Rohit from support was always just a call away.”

Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka from India

As per the insights from our destination experts, Sri Lanka does not have one universal travel season. The island has two distinct monsoon patterns due to its geography.

The southwest monsoon brings heavy rainfall to the west and south coasts between May and September, while the northeast monsoon affects the north and east coasts between October and January.

This means that when one coast is wet, the other is typically dry and sunny. Understanding this split is the single most useful thing you can do when planning your Sri Lanka trip.

December to April

This is the dry season for the west and south coasts, with temperatures between 22°C and 32°C. Colombo, Galle, Bentota, Mirissa, Kandy, Ella, and Nuwara Eliya are all at their best during these months. It is also peak season, so Sri Lanka holiday packages book up quickly. Accommodation prices rise, and popular sites like Sigiriya get crowded. It is advisable to book at least 6 to 8 weeks in advance if you are travelling between December and February.

May to September

When the southwest monsoon brings rain to Colombo and Galle from May onwards, the east coast flips to its dry season. Trincomalee and Arugam Bay see warm, sunny weather with temperatures around 28°C to 30°C.

Arugam Bay is one of Asia's most popular surf breaks and stays busiest from June to September. This period is also good for whale watching off Trincomalee. Travellers who time their itinerary around the East Coast often find fewer crowds and better prices overall.

Festival Season (July to August)

The Esala Perahera in Kandy is one of the most significant Buddhist festivals in Asia, held annually in July or August. The procession features decorated elephants, fire dancers, and drummers over 10 consecutive nights. It draws large crowds, so book accommodation in Kandy at least 2 to 3 months ahead if you plan to attend.

Visa Requirements for a Sri Lanka Tour From India

Indian passport holders need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to enter Sri Lanka. The ETA serves as an e-visa. You can easily apply for the same online at eta.gov.lk, and the process takes just a few minutes to complete.

The ETA is available for tourism, business, and transit purposes. When you are planning a Sri Lanka tour from India, you need to fill in your passport details, travel itinerary, and accommodation information. Upon approval, the ETA is linked electronically to your passport.

The government fee for Indian nationals is currently zero on the official portal. It is best to apply at least 3 to 5 days before travel since processing usually takes 24 hours but can stretch to 48 to 72 hours during peak season. Your ETA arrives by email, stays valid for 6 months from issue, and allows a stay of up to 30 days per entry. If you apply on arrival at Colombo airport instead, the fee is USD 25 (approx. INR 2,300), so applying in advance is the smarter choice.

The ETA covers a 30-day stay with double entry. It is recommended to keep the following documents ready before you apply for the ETA:

  • a valid Indian passport with at least 6 months' validity and 2 to 3 blank pages
  • a scanned copy of your bio-page
  • a recent colour photo
  • confirmed return flight details
  • accommodation proof

Sri Lanka Safety Tips for Indian Travellers

  • Stay vigilant in crowded areas and follow local security advice.
  • Drink bottled or purified water to avoid waterborne illnesses.
  • Use mosquito repellent, wear long sleeves and sleep under nets to prevent dengue and malaria. This is particularly important in rural areas and at dusk.
  • Respect cultural sites by dressing modestly and following temple protocols.
  • Avoid isolated beaches and nighttime travel in unfamiliar areas.
  • Carry important local emergency numbers and keep your phone charged for quick access during emergencies.
  • Ocean currents on the southwest coast, particularly around Mirissa and Unawatuna, can be strong. Swim only in designated areas and heed lifeguard flags. If caught in a rip current, swim parallel to shore rather than against it.
  • Sri Lanka drives on the left, the same as India. Road quality outside major highways can be poor. Hiring a driver with local road knowledge is recommended over self-driving for most Indian travellers.
