Japan covers such extraordinary ground in a relatively small geographic area. The bullet train connecting cities makes the whole country feel accessible. Hiroshima was deeply moving. Osaka's food culture is world-class. Nara's deer park was charming. I left feeling I had genuinely seen the country's soul rather than just its postcard images.

Japan in cherry blossom season from Mumbai, this was on our list for five years and Thrillophilia nailed the timing perfectly.
