Things to Do in Hassan

Approximately 195 kilometres away from Bangalore lies Hassan, a district with a glorious history. During the reign of the Hoysala Empire, Hassan was the proud capital of the kings. Today, it rests in peace and solitude, rich in ancient temples and elegant statues, but still bearing the stamp of modernity in its high-rise buildings and open roads surrounded by green pastures.

When in Hassan, you don’t just view temples, you experience them. The best thing to do in Hassan is to visit its magnificent array of temples that it is difficult to know where to start. An entire day can be spent simply making a pilgrimage of these serene ancient structures. Begin by paying a visit to Kedareswara Temple, a temple which houses some of the most wonderful statues carved in stone enshrined in a still silence that instills awe and calm in visitors. Lakshmi Narasimha Temple which is over 800 years old and rich in intricate carvings that exemplify the highest point of the Hoysala Empire, should be your next stop. This temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu while its counterpart Sadasiva Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Hasanamba Temple is another grand temple in Hassan but only open to tourists during the month of Diwali. Other sacred sites that add to the glory of the city include Bhagawan Bahubali Statue, Lakshmi Devi Temple, Koravangala Temple, and Shettihalli Church among others.

But Hassan is not just rich in ancient architecture, it also has some beautiful natural locations that are worth a visit. The scenic Bisile Ghat is a must-visit when in Hassan, especially in the monsoon. Hills upon hills stretch on to the horizon covered in lush green forests and fresh sweet-scented air blow all around. Chandragiri Hill, known to be the final resting place of Chandragupta Morya, is another wonderful location full of spirituality and well-being. The Gorur Dam and the Hemavathy Reservoir are great sites to visit too. Spending a weekend in Hassan is a great way to escape from the chaos of the city life and to immerse yourselves in peace and spirituality. We compiled the best things to do in Hassan for a memorable vacation here.
