The Gaumukh Tapovan trek is a thrillfest with gigantic views of the cow-shaped Gaumukh Glacier which is also one of the main water sources of the holy Ganges. The trek offers breathtaking views of the Gangotri peaks - Shivling, Thalay Sagar, and Meru.

The Gomukh Tapovan trek is scenic with nature's bounty and is decorated with fragrant flowers, snow-capped peaks, and similar jaw-dropping views. Take a dip in the holy Bhagirathi River, which is considered one of the sacred rituals. During the Gomukh glacier trek, one can also immerse in the divine aura of the pilgrim cities- Rishikesh, Uttarkashi, Gangotri, and Bhojwassa. Marvel at the sight of the Bhagirathi sisters to experience the summit views.

How to reach Gangotri:


By Rail:

The nearest railway station to Gangotri is Rishikesh 234 km before Gangotri on NH58 and is well connected by railway network with major destinations of India. Trains to Rishikesh are frequent. Taxis and buses are available from Rishikesh, Tehri Garhwal, Uttarkashi, and many other destinations to Gangotri.

By Air:

How to reach Gangotri by Air- The nearest airport to Gangotri is Jolly Grant Airport which is located around at the distance of 250kms. This airport is well linked to Delhi and there are numbers of daily flights to Delhi which connects to major parts of the country.

By Road:

Gangotri can be reached only via road in a bus, privately operated jeeps, SUVs/ other vehicles. The journey from Rishikesh takes about 12 hours. Taxi/Jeeps are also available from Taxi Stations in Rishikesh, Haridwar & Dehradun. Tourist cabs are available from Dehradun/Rishikesh.

2. Meals – (Breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner). We provide simple, nutritious vegetarian food on all days of the Gangotri Gomukh trek.

3. Camping charges – All trekking permits and forest camping charges are included.

4. Trekking equipment – High-quality tents and sleeping bags in all the camps. Sleeping bags can withstand temperatures as low as -10 ºC.

5. Safety equipment – First aid kit, oxygen cylinders, oximeter, etc. will be with guide/trek leader and at the campsite as well to deal with emergencies.

6. Expert trek Leaders – All our trek leaders are at least qualified in basic/advanced mountaineering and first aid course.

7. Expert Trek support team – The mountain staff on the Gomukh Gangotri trek consists of certified guides, cooks, helpers, and porters.

Gaumukh Tapovan Trek Itinerary

Day 1
Dehradun to Gangotri drive.
Gangotri

7/8 hours drive of 242 km

From Dehradun we drive to Gangnani via Uttarkashi.

Gangnani is known for the natural hot water spring baths it has.

We drive to Gangotri on this day itself. We stay at a guesthouse overnight.

Day 2
Gangotri (3,048 m) to Chirbasa (3,600 m) - 6 h trek
Gaumukh

9km trek in 6 hours.

On this day, we start our trek from Gangotri to Chirbasa (3,650 m).

From Gangotri we move along the beaten trail towards Chirbasa, which is on a tree line.

The entire trek today is along the roaring Bhagirathi River.

Day 3
Chirbasa to Bhojbasa (3,800 m) - 3 h trek
Tapovan

5 km trek in 3-4 hours.

Beyond Chirbasa the terrain becomes really desolate and barren.

In fact, it has been referred to as Arctic Tundra by many trekkers.

From Chirbasa we trek further to Bhojwassa, the entire trail passes through dense forest.

In Bhojbasa there is a small temple and a potential campsite near the river.

In the afternoon we are free to explore the area and to enjoy excellent sunset on Bhagirathi's group of peaks.

Day 4
Bhojbasa to Gaumukh (3,900 m) to Tapovan (4,335 m)- 7 h

Bhojbasa to Gaumukh to Tapovan, 7 hours 9 km

Early in the morning enjoy the panoramic view of the Bhagirathi group of peaks.

After breakfast, we trek to Gaumukh (3,890 m), the source of the Ganges.

We explore the area and trek to Tapovan, one of the finest high altitude alpine meadows in the area.

The trek from Gaumukh to Tapovan has a steep ascent, and as we climb, the view of the surrounding peaks becomes clearer.

They appear to be just a stone's throw away.

It is also a little wonder why Sadhus and saints choose this spot for extended meditation during the long summer months.

Day 5
Tapovan (4,463 m) rest day
Gangotri

This day is free for us to acclimatize, relax and enjoy the magnificent snow-capped peaks, flora, fauna, and mountain landscape.

This land is frequented by some of the greatest contemporary mountaineers.

The Shivling peak stands tall in front of us. Behind Shivling, towards the right is Meru.

A little towards the left of Shivling is Sumeru.

The Bhagirathi peaks are visible further to the left.

Bhagirathi III, Meru (Central Peak), and Sumeru have some of the hardest climbing routes in the world.

We can visit the Meru Glacier and return to our campsite.

Day 6
Tapovan to Bhojbasa- 5-6 h
Rishikesh

Tapovan to Bhojbasa, 5-6 hours trek 7 km

Early in the morning, we enjoy the sunrise on high peaks.

After breakfast, we trek down to Bhojbasa.

Day 7
Bhojbasa to Gangotri- 5-6 h

Bhojbasa to Gangotri, 5-6 hours trek 14 km

We trek to Gangotri in the morning.

Dinner and overnight stay at a guesthouse.

Day 8
Gangotri to Dehradun drive

Gangotri to Dehradun drive, 9 h drive 245 km

Early morning after breakfast, we drive back to Dehradun and arrive by evening.

Know Before You Go for Gaumukh Tapovan Trek

  • Climatic conditions in the high altitudes vary from the plains; take adequate time to get acclimatized to high altitudes.
  • The management reserves all the right to modify the trek during any emergencies or natural calamities.
  • Consult a physician before undertaking the trek. Carry basic medications and a first-aid kit during the trek.
  • Pay heed to the trek guides and instructors in order to enjoy a safe and sound trek.
  • The trek takes place through an eco-friendly zone; do not encourage littering the local sites or campsites. Travelers littering may be fined.
  • Water is very precious, so conservation is appreciated.
  • Do not encourage trekking during the night unless it is a part of the itinerary and a guide is with you; this might lead to unforeseen mishaps.
  • Avoid using plastic bags and maintain the ecological balance of the destinations.
  • In case, the trek needs to be canceled, the authorities should be informed beforehand.
  • Guidelines issued by the State-Government are to be followed. Social distancing to be maintained. Frequent hand sanitization and the use of masks are recommended.
  • Please provide a valid ID at the time of check-in.
  • The exact location will be shared with you post-booking.
  • Professional guide(s) are available to ensure high safety and more information and personal attention which are necessary to appreciate a trek.
  • Neat and clean vehicle for the journey with experienced drivers especially for hilly terrains available.
  • All the activities depend upon the weather.
  • Camping is very basic in nature. One must not expect luxuries. Electricity may be available only at a few locations.
  • Mobile & laptop charging points may/may not be available on campsites at a common point.
  • Any personal expenses, items of personal nature, meals not mentioned, etc. will not be in part of the package.
  • Carry dry snacks/food from home (you will save a lot of money). Carry water bottles with you, so that you can refill
  • Keep your luggage minimum; the more you carry, the more you hassle.
  • Children below the age of 7 years are not recommended for this trek.
  • It is recommended to carry enough warm clothes and the right kind of shoes for Gangotri Gomukh trek.
  • Avoid using earphones during Gomukh Glacier trek, this might hinder your audibility.

  • During a trip, in case the roads are blocked due to landslides or a reason that is beyond control, Thrillophilia will rearrange the itinerary for the travellers real-time, however, the cost of alternative accommodation will be borne by the customer as the hotels pre-booked execute their cancellation policies and are nonrefundable.
  • Because of any reason natural or personal, if the Trek or a particular activity is not completed, no refund will be processed.
  • The difference in the cost shall be borne by the client in case of any amendment in the package due to change in the number of guests, hotel change, itinerary change, etc.
  • If in case any traveller wants to or decides to leave the trip in the middle, all the expenses from that point onwards will be borne by the traveller. Neither the operator nor Thrillophilia will be held responsible for such decisions or for any refund.
  • The refund or compensation is also not issued if for any reason you have to come down from the trek. The trek leader may send you down from the trek, owing to reasons like lack of fitness, AMS, blood pressure, turn-around-time, health issues, or if you are found smoking/ drinking, or breaking the rules of the trek. refund or compensation are issued only when the whole trek is cancelled or called off on behalf of Thrillophilia.
  • At Thrillophilia, we almost never call off or cancel our treks. But in the rare event we might have to call off or cancel a trek due to any unforeseen natural catastrophes like continuous rain or snow, thunderstorms, snowstorms, landslides, floods, earthquakes, or any other natural calamity or other issues like local riots, curfews, pandemics, lockdowns, government orders, or any such situations that might prevent a safe trekking experience. In such cases, Thrillophilia will issue a Credit note summing up to the same amount as your trek fee that can be redeemed on any of the treks over a period of the next year.
