Within the 6 days of this Gangotri Gomukh Tapovan trek, one can marvel at the beauty of the Gomukh glacier, which forms one of the main sources of water for river Ganges.  Along with your way to the peak, you can also visit several other attractions as well. This includes some of the popular and stunning pilgrimage sites in the area. The caves and huts housing ascetics at Tapovan are also quite inspiring. You will start the trek after reaching Rishikesh.

Uttarkashi to Gangotri will let you watch many holy rivers and landscapes which are the prominent attractions coming along with you.  This trek will let you observe the magnificent beauty of Bhojwassa after you cover the well-laid paths leading to the region. The steep climbs leading to the high altitude meadows are conquered by many people before and you are also invited to catch the glimpses of the major towers in the Himalayan Ranges spreading across the region very closely by staying at the velvet type grasslands.

Witnessing the beauty of the stunning views of the Bhagirathi group of peaks, you will continue trekking to Gomukh and then towards Tapovan. Get a chance to witness the flora and fauna of the region as you keep continuing your trek on the seventh and eighth day. Itinerary

  • Day 1 - Rishikesh – Uttarkashi- Gangotri  (250 kms/ 7-8 hrs) (3048 m/ 10,000 ft)

    Get transferred to Uttarkashi (1150 mt) via a hill town of Chamba and Tehri which takes 5-6 hrs.

    As you reach Gangotri check-in to your hotel.

    In the evening, you are free to explore the nearby places on your own.

  • Day 2 - Gangotri (3048 mts/10000 ft) - Bhojwassa (3792 mts/12440 ft) 14 kms trek/5-6 hrs)

    Today, post breakfast, start trekking towards Bhojwassa via Chirbasa (3600mt).

    The entire trail passes through dense forest.

    You can watch a small temple near the destination and a beautiful campsite near down the river in Bhojwassa.

    Enjoy staying at the river side camps.

    Amble around the picture perfect surrounding and in the evening head to witness the stunning sunset on Bhagirathi group of peaks.

  • Day 3 - Bhojwassa - Gomukh (3890 mts/12760 ft) - Tapovan (4463 mts / 14640 ft)

    After breakfast trek to Gomukh (3890mt), the source of the Ganges.

    Explore the area and trek to Tapovan,vone of the finest high altitude alpine meadows in the area.

    The trek from Gomukh to Tapovan is steep, and as one climbs, the view of the surrounding peaks becomes clearer.

    Have dinner and enjoy the camp stay at Tapovan.

  • Day 4 - Tapovan - Bhojwassa (4340 mts/14235/Trek 4-5 hrs)

    Today you will be trekking to Bhojwassa where you will get enough time to explore the beautiful surroundings and meander through the stunning pathways.

    Post dinner, retire for the night in your tents.

  • Day 5 - Bhojwassa  - Gangotri  (4880 m/16000 ft) Trek (6 kms / 4-5 hrs).

    Post breakfast in the morning, trek down to Gangotri and the downhill trek for 5 to 6 hours will let you reach the hotel at Gangotri.

    Spend the night here.

  • Day 6 - Gangotri – Rishikesh  

    Post breakfast, get a drive to Rishikesh and wind up the six day trek beautifully and with plenty of good memories.

    1. When is the best time for Gomukh Tapovan Trek?

      The best time to do Gomukh trek is during the month of May - June and Aug – Oct. The weather will be mostly sunny during the day and colder at night. During this time the daytime temperatures remain 20-24° C if sunny and 14-15° C if cloudy. During the night time, the temperature will range from 5-7°C and can drop to -2–3°C at Tapovan. You might find snow in May, especially at Tapovan.

      The Gaumukh Tapovan trek is not recommended for first timers. There are tricky glacier sections to be crossed in addition to steep climbs. Irrespective of your prior experience, it is essential that you be very fit and well prepared for the trek.

    4. What kind of shoes I should have?

      You don’t need special snow shoes. A good trekking shoe is sufficient for the trek. We recommend something that is water resistant. When there is snow, we provide micro spikes and gaiters. In case you need to buy new trekking shoes, this video will help you choose the right pair.

    5. What will be the facility of food and water during Gomukh Tapovan Trek?

      There are proper meals with subsequent nutritional values planned for the people coming in for the trek. From dinner on Day 1 to Breakfast on Day 13, all meals will be provided. This would include nutritional vegetarian meals, a total of 6 in a day, with the addition of tea and coffee during breaks.

    6. What all medicines I should carry? Can I take diamox?

      Carrying medicines is important while trekking anywhere in the world. Your first-aid should have anti-diarrhea medicine such as loperamide but make sure that you don't take it unless getting to a toilet isn't an option. During the trekking you may not have access to pharmacies. So it’s better to have medications ready. Yes, you can carry diamox and can be taken too if having sickness/nausea.

    7. Will there be mobile connectivity?

      Indian mobile networks do not work for most part of this trek. BSNL network will be available at Gangotri. Make sure you inform anxious family members about poor connectivity on the trek. Electricity charging points will be present at the guest house in Gangotri. However, its use depends on power supply in Gangotri.

    8. What will be the temparature like?

      The average temperature in the day time will be about 12°C-17°C and in the night time, it can be as low as 2°C-7°C and can drop to -2°C - 3°C at Tapovan.

    9. Will there be snow on this trek on Gomukh Tapovan Trek?

      Depending on the amount of snowfall that occurs in the preceding winter, you might find snow in May, especially at Tapovan. Snow is unlikely in September.

    10. What will we do if it rains?

      If it starts raining while you’re trekking, we will continue on the trail as planned. Your poncho should protect you from the rain. Carry a backpack cover for extra protection from rain for your belongings. When it rains at the campsite, we usually get together in the dining tent and play games. The tents that you will be staying in, the dining tent, kitchen and toilet tents are all water proof, so you will stay dry inside.
