About the trip:-Famous for a beautifully erected Ashokan Pillar, Lauriya Nandangarh is a small town situated approx. 28 km. north of Bettiah. The village derives its name from a pillar (Laur) of Mauryan Emperor Ashoka and a stupa mound Nandangarh which is just 2 km southwest of the pillar. Located on the banks of the Burhi Gandak River, a tributary of Ganga, the town was once a part of the great Mauryan Empire.- Initially, there were forty pillars built by Emperor Ashoka but today only one remains in its complete form at its initial position in Lauriya Nandangarh.- The height of the pillar is more than 12 meters and even after so many years, the Mauryan polish used on the pillar maintains its radiance and sheen.- The pillar is inscribed with the edicts of Ashoka and is crowned with a lion on the top.- Another one of the main tourist attractions of Lauriya Nandangarh is a large stupa, which is believed to be one of the biggest stupas in India.- The massive stupa is 24 m in height and has a circumference of almost 457 m.
