    Gaumukh Tapovan Trek

    The main source and root of the holy river Ganga, Gaumukh is set on the Gangotri glacier, where many peaks are there.

    According to Hindu mythology, Gaumukh is one of the holiest destinations for Hindu pilgrims.

    This trek brings you to the main root of Ganga that is Gaumukh.

    Gaumukh is appeared like a cow mouth, but nowadays it doesnt appear like that.

    The gorgeous glacier of Gaumukh is the main root of river Bhagirathi.

    Thousands of devotees take dip into this river.

    Take a trail to Bhojbasa, where there is a tourist bungalow.

    Around 14 km further, there is another holy place called Gangotri.

    Move with beaten track which brings you to Chirbasa.

    Chirbasa is set on a tree line from where clear vistas of the peak Bhagirathi can be observed.

    Another adventurous track to Tapovan is set on elevation of 4463 km.

    The base camp of Shivling peak, Tapovan offers nice sight of Bhagirathi peaks.

    Gaumukh: Gaumukh is the holy land of waters of Ganga which flows from the glaciers. Gau means cow and much means mouth.

    From distance it looks like a cows mouth.

    The short trail takes you to Chirbasa.

    From here you can take a glance of the peak called Bhagirathi.

    This sacred place is the most visited by thousands of visitors.

    How to get there

    By Air: Located at 24 km from Rishikesh, Jolly Grant is the closest airport.

    Though, taking a flight to this place is not advisable.

    By Road: Reach the town of Gangotri by bus or taxi from Uttarkashi.

    Uttarkashi can be traveled to by bus from Haridwar.

    Haridwar in turn is connected to many cities of India.

    By Rail: Rishikesh is linked to all the chief towns and cities of India.

    Some of the links are accessible only from Haridwar.

    Around 5 km from Chirbasa, Bhojbasa is a glacial grey village.

    Uttarakashi: The captivating town of Uttaranchal is basically a temple town.

    It comprises of many temples including Lord Shiva and others.

    Around 32 temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva.

    The town of temples, Uttarkashi has spiritual and religious importance.

    Thousands of devotees visit this holy place.

    You will find several ashrams and home to many saints and ascetics.

Gaumukh Tapovan Trek

Being a source of the Bhagirathi River, the River Gaumukh is considered as the true source of the River Ganga. A trek of 18 kms from Gangotri takes you to Gaumukh, the surreal and peaceful area that provides the panoramic views of Bhagirathi peaks.

Tapovan 4300 meters is situated beyond Gaumukh and consists of the magnificent meadows situated at the foot of mount Shivling. The trekking trail is usually gentle, but gets perilously steep at places. The trek is a combined experience of trekking, bouldering, rock climbing and glacier traversing.

On reaching Tapovan, you get to see the mesmerising view of the beautiful snow capped peaks swathed in sunlight. Another attraction of this trekking trail is the sight of Akash Ganga, the actual river Ganga that flows from the Jata of Lord Shiva according to popular belief, bathing the Shiva Linga. The surrounding beauty and tranquility of Tapovan will mesmerize, ease and calm your mind.
