Know Before You Go

  • ID proof is mandatory for each individual guest at the time of booking, and also upon arrival. PAN card will not be considered as a valid address proof.
  • Respect the local communities and their traditions. Meghalaya is home to the Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo tribes, each with unique customs. Always ask before photographing people, rituals, or private property to avoid unintentionally offending anyone.
  • Carry comfortable walking shoes, as many attractions like waterfalls, caves, and root bridges involve uneven trails and long walks. The terrain can be slippery during rains, so sturdy footwear is essential.
  • Pack a light jacket or raincoat, even in the dry season, since Meghalaya is known for sudden showers and cool evenings. Umbrellas and ponchos also come in handy.
  • Avoid single-use plastics. Meghalaya has strict eco-conscious practices, and many towns have banned plastic bottles and bags. Carry your own refillable bottle and eco-friendly tote bag.
  • Start your day early. Attractions in Shillong and nearby towns close by evening, and most markets wind down after sunset. Planning ahead ensures you don’t miss out.
  • Public drinking or intoxication is discouraged and can attract fines or unwanted attention. If you do consume alcohol, keep it private and low-key.
  • Keep noise levels down at natural sites like waterfalls, caves, or forests. Many of these are considered sacred by locals, and loud behaviour can disturb the environment as well as other travellers.
  • Dispose of waste responsibly. Carry a small bag for your trash if bins aren’t available and avoid littering, especially in remote or eco-sensitive areas.
  • Follow safety guidelines strictly. Wear life jackets during boating at Dawki River, avoid swimming in unfamiliar waters, and never cross safety barricades near waterfalls or cliffs.
  • Stick to marked trails when exploring caves, forests, or treks. Venturing into restricted or unmarked areas can be both unsafe and disrespectful to local regulations.
  • Dress modestly when visiting temples or sacred groves, and remove shoes if required. Being mindful of dress and behaviour shows respect to local spiritual practices.
  • Mobile networks may be weak in certain remote areas, so inform someone of your itinerary when heading out for treks or long drives. Carry some cash as ATMs are limited in smaller towns.
