Know Before You Go

  • Images are for representation purpose only.
  • Many parts of Route 66 are well-paved, but some sections, especially near Amboy and the Mojave Desert, can be rough or unmaintained.
  • Gas stations can be sparse in remote areas, particularly between Barstow and Needles. Always fill up your tank before long stretches of open road.
  • GPS may not always be reliable in the desert or rural areas. Carry a detailed Route 66 map or download offline maps to avoid getting lost.
  • Expect limited or no signal in remote areas like Mojave National Preserve and Amboy Crater. Inform someone about your travel plans before heading out.
  • Desert areas can be extremely hot during the day and chilly at night. Wear layers, use sunscreen, and stay hydrated.
  • Some attractions, like the Original McDonald's Museum and Elmer’s Bottle Tree Ranch, may have limited hours. Check opening times in advance to avoid disappointment.
  • Many stops, including Amboy Crater and Mojave National Preserve, are protected areas. Stay on marked trails, pack out your trash, and avoid disturbing wildlife.
