Know Before You Go

  • The local currency is the Jordanian Dinar (JOD). Credit cards are widely accepted in cities, but carry cash for small towns and markets.
  • Jordan has a desert climate; pack light, breathable clothing for the day and warm layers for cool evenings, especially in Wadi Rum.
  • Modest clothing is recommended, especially when visiting religious sites. Women may need a scarf to cover their heads in mosques.
  • Stay hydrated, especially in desert areas like Wadi Rum and Petra. Carry a reusable water bottle and wear sunscreen.
  • Jordanians are hospitable; a simple "Shukran" (thank you) is appreciated. Avoid public displays of affection and ask permission before taking photos of locals.
  • Arabic is the official language, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas. Learning a few Arabic phrases can be helpful.
  • Tipping (baksheesh) is customary in restaurants, hotels, and for guides and drivers. Around 10% is standard.
  • Jordan uses Type C, D, F, G, and J plugs, with a standard voltage of 230V. Carry a universal adapter if needed.
