Know Before You Go
- Peru involves high-altitude travel, especially in Cusco (3,400 m) and Machu Picchu region. Spend time acclimatising in the Sacred Valley first, drink plenty of water and avoid heavy meals/alcohol on arrival.
- Mild symptoms like headache, fatigue or breathlessness are common at altitude. Coca tea, slow walking and proper rest usually help.
- Carry your original passport at all times, especially for Machu Picchu entry and train boarding. Details must match booking exactly.
- Weather in the Andes changes quickly, pack layered clothing, rain protection, sunblock and comfortable walking shoes.
- Machu Picchu has strict entry time slots and fixed visitor circuits. Late arrivals may lead to denied entry without refund. Also, large backpacks, drones, tripods and food items are restricted at Machu Picchu. Only small daypacks are permitted.
- Walking tours in Cusco involve cobblestone streets, steps and uneven terrain, so good footwear is essential.
- Cash in Peruvian Soles is useful for local markets, small restaurants and tips in Sacred Valley and Cusco. Brazilian currency is the Brazilian Real. Thus, small cash is helpful for kiosks, tips and local purchases.
- Lima is generally safe in Miraflores and Barranco areas, but travellers should avoid isolated streets late at night and use registered taxis or app-based rides.
- Rio de Janeiro is vibrant but requires basic safety awareness. Thus, avoid carrying valuables on beaches, use Uber/taxis at night and stay in main tourist zones like Copacabana or Ipanema.
- Favela walking tours must be done only with licensed local guides. Independent visits are not recommended.
- Iguazu Falls visits involve border crossing between Brazil and Argentina. Therefore, carry your passport and follow guide instructions for immigration procedures.
- Expect to get wet at Iguazu Falls. Bring waterproof covers, quick-dry clothing and spare footwear.
- Tropical weather means strong sun and humidity. Hence, hydration, sunscreen and hats are strongly advised, especially in Rio.
