SUN YAT SEN Overview

Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall is a two-storeyed villa that has now been transformed into a museum. The villa was built in the honor of Dr. Sun Yat Sen, who visited Singapore nine times in the period of 1900 to 1911. Dr. Sun was a revolutionist who helped in removing the Qing Dynasty and is also considered an important figure in Chinese history as well as Southeast Asian history. 

Sun yat sen Nanyang memorial hall is a villa that is of two floors, which is now converted into a museum in the honor of Dr. Sun Yat Sen. Dr. Sun was the leader of a revolution that resulted in the fall of the Qing Dynasty. Dr. Sun had many supporters including Teo Eng Hock, Tan Chor Lam etc. The villa was originally bought by Wan Qing Yan for his mother to live in after her retirement and later it was given to Dr. Sun to carry out his revolutionary activities. Teo Eng Hock bought it completely for Dr. Sun.

The villa was declared a national monument and in 1996 the villa was renovated. The villa was then opened to the public in 2001. There are 5 galleries that showcase photos, letters, and multimedia that show Dr. Sun’s relationship with other revolutionists during that era. The other galleries display holograms that display the daily activities of Dr. Sun in the villa. How To Reach

  • Valid identification must be provided if requested. 
  • The free volunteer service timings vary from English to Mandarin. So, it is advised to time your schedule according to your preferences.
  • It is requested to have all food and drinks outside the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall. Food and drinks are not allowed into the hall as they may attract ants and other pests.

  • The villa is very old hence the cupboards and showcases. So, it is requested to not lean on any of them as they might crack and you might get injured.
  • No running around is allowed in the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall.
  •  Touching any of the artifacts or displays is prohibited because the natural oil from your fingers might destroy the age-old documents and exhibits.
  • It is requested to click pictures without flash. The light from the flash might destroy papers or textiles as they are very old. This is the reason why some of the galleries are dimly lit.

The guided tours are available in two languages in the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall. They are English and Mandarin. The English tours for permanent galleries from Wednesday to Friday start from 2 pm and on Saturdays and Sundays, they start from 3 pm. For the special exhibition, the English tour on Fridays starts from 10:30 am and on Saturdays, they start from 1:30 pm. The mandarin tours for permanent galleries on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday start from 2:30 pm and for special exhibitions on Saturdays, they start from 10:30 am. Each guided tour lasts for 45 to 60 minutes.
