Gangtey Monastery also known as the Gangtey Gompa is one of the major religious places of the Nyingma school of Buddhism. The history of the place can be traced as far back as the 17th century. The beautiful building is a sight to behold with colorful frescos adorning the walls and hundreds of carved pillars supporting the structure.
The complex has five temples which surround the central tower, all of which follow the traditional Tibetan architectural style. The region offers many Gangtey treks where you get to walk through tiny hamlets and villages and take in the dramatic scenery of the region before stopping at this historic building.
This is an excellent place to visit in Bhutan in December as you can witness the spectacle of black-necked cranes, who come to Bhutan to roost and circle the monastery three times on arrival and also before returning to Tibet.
