Formerly known as the Victoria and Albert Museum, Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum happens to be the earliest museum built in the Indian city of Mumbai. Established back in the year 1855, the structure was first used as a storehouse of industrial and decorative arts. However, in the year 1975, it was renamed in honor and memory of the great scholar, Dr. Bhau Daji Lad. The museum was opened for public visits in the year 2008.Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum displays the early craftsmanship and art of the early residents of Bombay. The museum manifests the rich cultural heritage of Mumbai through decorative and fine art. Some important primitive objects that visitors can see in the museum include small clay models, costumes, copper and silverware, lithographs, maps, photographs, dioramas, and rare books that highlight important tidbits about life in the city from the eighteenth to the early twentieth centuries. The museum also has a manuscript of the well-known Arab poet Hatim Tai, which dates back to the seventeenth century. You can also find the historic Kala Ghoda figurine placed inside the museum. Just outside the building, a monolithic elephant sculpture discovered from the water body originating from Elephanta Island has been installed.Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum is frequently visited by history buffs, experience seekers, photographers, and education enthusiasts.
