Spanning 105 Km long, the Chadar trek has its own magic that you need to unveil. While experiencing the adrenaline rush like never before, you will also face a lot of difficulties on the way that might shake your courage from time to time. Let water and enthusiasm fuel your will and befriend the gumboots and trekking poles, so that the following difficulties do not become the hurdles you cannot cross.
AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness): Acute Mountain Sickness is your biggest foe during this trek. Though it is quite common in the mountainous region, it is in abundance in chadar Trek due to the extreme negative temperatures. Make sure you acclimatize a week prior so as to get your body acquainted with the low temperature and reduce the chances of getting AMS.
Hypothermia: Hypothermia is a condition when your body loses heat a higher rate than it can produce. It is better to avoid any alcohol consumption as it will definitely make you the victim of hypothermia by increasing the adrenaline rate, making you feel warmer but actually lowering the temperature of your body.
Broken Trail: Due to the fluctuations in temperature, the ice sheet or as the locals call it chadar freezes and unfreezes from time to time. This counts as a major difficulty while you are walking over the frozen Zanskar because there are times when you can’t really make out if the ice underneath is solid or not. Make sure you watch out for the same and focus where the ice sheet crackles, where it becomes shifty, and where it is slippery.
Dehydration: While you do not feel the need to consume water due the bone-chilling weather, you body demands adequate amount of water so as to sustain the tiring expedition. The water level of the body regulates the basic functioning adding up to your immunity and persistence. Ensure that you drink the required amount of water and stay hydrated.
Injuries: Cuts, bruises, and small injuries are unavoidable in during the trek as you will definitely slip over the ice, trip over the ice boulders, and definitely get the painful rewards (yes you will! ). Though the seriousness of the injuries can vary, people who are prone to fractures due to prior surgeries should be more cautious. Make sure you keep a first-aid kit handy and inform the team leader in case you get any severe injury as it will take around 24 hours to get you any medical assistance. Keep that in mind.
