Goa is the smallest state in India and is known for its natural beauty, vibrant culture and as one of the most visited places in India. Goa has recently been in limelight for its growing environmental challenge of plastic and textile waste. In 2019-2020 Goa ranked at first position in the country for producing plastic waste. Centre of Sustainability in Goa has taken a conscious step towards reducing plastic waste in the state. The centre is working towards upcycling textile waste by reducing the usage of non-recyclable plastic bags and encouraging usage of cloth bags. A campaign #MakaNakaPlastic has been launched for this initiative. “Maka naka plastic” means “I don’t want plastic” in Konkani, Goa’s official language.
