Catacombs of St. Callixtus Rome

The Catacombs of St. Callixtus in Rome used to be the official burial ground of the Roman church in the 3rd century AD. The reason why it is home to the tombstones of more than half a million Christians, including 16 popes and many bishops.

The Little Vatican’ is the most important part of this cemetery as it served as the official burial place of as many as nine popes. There’s also a marble slab placed in this area, on which one can easily read renowned verses of Pope Damasus.

The whole cemetery is dotted with archaic Christian symbols. Get a local guide who will run you through all the symbols as symbolism was an integral part of Christianity in that era.
