If you are in search of spiritual bliss in a countryside setting, venture out to Ponda, the “cultural city of Goa”. Located 29 km from Panaji, Ponda is famous for its temples. Located at an elevation of 42 metres (138 ft), you can reach it from Panaji, Margao, Dharwad, Hubli and Belgaum by bus. Margao is the nearest railway station and Konkani is the most commonly used language here.
Ponda was a refuge for Hindus during the time of the Portuguese invasion and many temples were relocated here from other places. Devotees and architecture lovers would love exploring temples in scenic villages, nearby and on the route between Ponda and Margao.
While at Ponda, check out the beautiful pillars of the famous Mangueshi temple dedicated to Shiva or the beautiful brass bell of the Mahalasa Narayani temple. Take some time out to be enamored of the magnificent lamp tower of the popular Shanta Durga temple. Another temple known for its architecture is the Vijaya Durga temple near Satode. Ramnath and Ramnathi, Mahalakshmi, Laxmi Narasimha and Nav Durga temples are some of the other well known temples here. The attractive unifying feature here is the unique architecture amidst rustic scenes.
Ponda is also a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. You should definitely visit Bondla wildlife sanctuary, which is 26 km from Panaji, and the impressive Dudhsagar waterfalls. For the botanically inclined, there are spice farms located close to the town as well.
