Marayur also known as Marayoor, is located in the Idukki district of Kerala and is just 40 km away from the well known region of Munnar. The exact location of Marayur can be described as a hidden spot between the Kannan Devan Tea Plantation which is situated in Idukki district and the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary. The entire region of Marayur is surrounded by the presence of the Western Ghats.
There is an intriguing aspect about this location. Although the village of Marayur is located in Kerala, but its topography is quite different and distinct from the other cities which lies within the boundaries of Kerala. The presence of a distinct type of sandalwood and sugarcane plantations in this region makes the character of this region different.
An intriguing feature in this region is the stone coffins, also called Muniyaras, which are the graveyards of the ancient saints. The Thengasinatha Temple is also a major attraction which is believed to have been built by the Pandavas. The Thoovanam Waterfalls encourage adventure blended tourism which includes trekking and mountaineering. The rocky hills, rivers, brooks and hill locks pave the way for thrill and adventure for the tourists. There is a children’s park which is built under the canopy of Banyan Tree, where the famous Neelakurinji flowers blooms once in 12 years.
The region has an exotic wildlife to its credit. This is a heaven for the wildlife enthusiasts, as the grasslands boast carnivores such as leopard and tiger. The other jungle denizens of this region include bison, monkeys, wild bears, bison and languors. The birds which can be easily seen in this location are mynas, wild parrots and red horned sparrows.
The place can be accessed by roads from both Munnar and Tamil Nadu. There is a well established system of National Highways.
