There are plenty of places around Bangalore that are suitable for quick getaways. Manchinbele dam, located on the banks of the Manchinbele lake, built across the Arkavathy river is one such scenic location. This is an artificial dam built by the government for irrigation purposes, and to provide drinking water, under the “Thore Saalu” project.
The dam, designed by Sir M. Vishweshwaraiah, is not an architectural wonder. However, its beauty lies in the backwaters, which is surrounded by the Savandurga hills and the reserve forests. This makes it an ideal location for family picnics, corporate outings and quick getaways. The ideal time to visit Manchinbele is between February and September.
Reaching the place is also quite easy.If one is driving or riding from Bangalore, travelling along the Mysore road and taking the right turn to reach the Big Banyan Tree, helps cover one half of the journey. After the Big Banyan Tree, if one heads further, the village of Byalalu can be seen. Heading further will take the person to the destination. If one does not want to ride or drive, there are plenty of buses from Bangalore to Manchinbele, which makes reaching the place easy.
Manchinbele is famous for bird watching and sunset watching. However, apart from spending a quiet day here, one can also indulge in adventurous activities like Kayaking, shooting, rappelling, trekking, high rope traversing and raft building.
Apart from the attractions at Manchinbele, one can also trek the Savandurga hills, which is Asia’s largest monolithic rock. The Nandi on the summit and the Lakshmi Narasimha temple at the base are worth a visit. The 400 year old Big Banyan Tree, which is on the way is also a tourist attraction. So, if you are looking at a quick getaway and not much travelling, Manchinbele has its arms wide open to receive you.
