Ladakh is popularly known to be one of the oldest abodes of the many Buddhist monasteries and Gompas in India. Ladakh was one of the premiers places to set the chronicles of Buddhism in India. Some of the popular monasteries are Hemis, Thiksey, Stok, and Lamayuru including one Buddhist Stupa which is an eye-catcher called the Shanti Stupa.
