Is it safe to travel to Leh Ladakh
Although thousands of tourists visit Leh Ladakh every year, it is understandable if you are still apprehensive about travelling to the place. The high altitude, unavailability of modern facilities, winding roads, harsh weather conditions, rough terrain, and conflict in parts of Jammu and Kashmir - all of these factors contribute to the uncertainty people feel when planning a trip to this region.

To clear the air in one word -- yes, Ladakh is completely safe to visit. A more detailed response will depend on what aspect you are most worried about.

1. Rough Terrain

Leh Ladakh is perfectly safe for travelling, as long as you take care of some safety measures. Follow the aforementioned precautions and plan your vacation today. It will be one of the most unparalleled experiences of your life. Choose a vehicle, preferably an SUV, which not just provides space and comfort but also keeps moving on bumpy roads.

The winding roads with broken and bad conditions often scare drivers from visiting the stunning location altogether. The dry and cold weather, along with rough and rocky terrain only tend to add to the fear.

While all that is not invalid, the spectacular natural splendor of the valley certainly makes up for it. You can hire a taxi if you are unsure about your own driving skills, and you can undergo training that will help you thrive and survive in Leh Ladakh. It is natural to worry about these things, but thousands of people undertake the trip every year and while the terrain may not exactly be unsafe, it is certainly difficult.

2. Altitude Problems

The highway to Leh Ladakh from Srinagar and Manali allows for a gradual increase in altitude, so as long as you do not exert yourself, your body will be able to adjust to the change on its own. Acute mountain sickness, which causes headache, dizziness and nausea at high altitudes, is only a risk when there is a sudden change in altitude. Still, it would be precautionary to take some emergency medication with you and avoid drinking and smoking on your way. If you take basic precautions and keep yourself hydrated, your journey will get a lot enjoyable.

3. Turmoil in Kashmir

Kashmir has witnessed disturbance over the last few years, and it may cause apprehension among some people, but you may go via Sonmarg which is 3 hours away from Srinagar.
Although the people welcome tourists, it is advisable to not wander around or go to unknown places. To ease your woes, make sure you have a local contact in case of an emergency. Rallies in Kashmir rarely have any impact on Ladakh, so you should be safe on your trip to Ladakh.

4. Safety in Ladakh

The people of Ladakh are warm and welcoming. The peace-loving hosts will ensure that despite the low mobile connectivity and remoteness of the place, you will not feel homesick or unsafe, even if you are a solo traveller or a female traveller. If you get stuck anywhere due to non-availability of resources like fuel and food, do not worry! Apart from the helpful locals, you will meet many tourists who will flock on the same roads on Ladakh as you, and you can always bank on them to rescue you in case of an emergency.

5. Chinese Intrusions

The problem of intrusions by Chinese soldiers is only relevant in places that are close to the Indo-Chinese border. Most of the border adjacent villages are quite far away from tourist destinations on your way. You will not witness any army presence or security issues as long as you stay on your path.

So, what are you waiting for? Pack your bags already, because the mountains are calling!
