Located 49 kms away from the sacred Yamunotri Dham, Barkot is situated at an altitude of 1,220 meters above sea level. Tourists are greeted to the splendid view of the Himalayan peaks along with the Bandarpoonch peak which is named so for its resemblance to a monkey’s tail. It is a destination worth visiting for both pilgrims as well as trekkers.
Barkot is a lovely place for anyone who intends to visit Yamunotri or even go on a trek as it has modern facilities for a comfortable stay. April to November is the ideal time to visit this place as road blocks due to landslides are quite common during monsoons.
Some of the major tourist attractions here include: the Yamunotri Temple which is one of the Char Dhams and the Veda camp known for its adventure sports and located at an altitude of 2,118 metres. Surya Kund is a thermal spring where the pilgrims cook potatoes and rice in which is served as the ‘prasad’.
Barkot can be easily reached by bus from nearby places like Uttarkashi, Dehradun and Rishikesh. Delhi is about 395 kms away and can be reached by road. About 161 kms away is the Jolly Grant airport from where one can hire taxis to reach Barkot. The nearest train stations are Dehradun and Rishikesh from where they can reach Barkot by bus or private taxis.
