Aritar is the dreamland of Sikkim with dense forests and lush green paddy fields along with a spectacular view of Mount Kanchendzonga. One of the oldest natural lake here is Lampokhari which is commonly used for boating by the locals. It is located at 4600 ft above sea level and the only lake in Sikkim with boating facilities. It is the premises which was home to Sikkim’s first treasury and first outpost for Sikkim Police.
Aritar Gumpa is a monastery of the Kagyuapa order. Considered a holy place among buddhists in the region, it draws a large number of visitors. The culture of this place is reflected in the traditional architecture of the place, the painted murals, carvings and treasure of manuscripts and icons. The pilgrimage site of Parbateyswar Shivalaya Mandir is visited by thousands of devotees to seek blessings. A sip of sacred water from a sacred vessel in the month of Sawan is considered to be the blessing of God.
Mankhim, the temple of Rai of Nepali origin with the elephant footprints on the rock and Nirmal Dham, the abode of Nirmal Guruji with his miraculous healing power are two places which draw a large number of tourists.
Shrouded in the mist, Aritar and its surroundings have many places ideal for trekking. Also one can visit the Nathu La Pass, Jelep La Pass. Nathu La Pass is about 29 kms away from here which is a picture perfect tourist destination.
Bagdogra of Siliguri which is about 130 kms from Aritar town is the nearest airport. One has to take a bus or private transport to the town of Aritar which is about four hours drive from here. The nearest railway station is at Jalpaiguri which has good connectivity to most parts of India. For those who wish to travel by road, it is 111 kms from Darjeeling, 130 kms from Siliguri and 135 kms from Gangtok.
