Parang La Trek Overview

About the Parang La Trek:

Parang La trek takes you through the verdant beauty of Spiti Valley. Here is a nine-day long adventure expedition to Parang La from Kaza, the beautiful starting point which is really suitable for a perfect commencement of such an expedition. In the first lap of the trek, Kibber at an altitude of 14000 feet and centuries old Ki monastery will be the ideal place to explore and after crossing many narrow river gorges you will reach Dumla. The quite tough and demanding phase of the trek comes when you move from Thaltak Meadow to Jagtha and from there to Bomgrojen.

The fourth day of the trek sees the main stretches of this exciting adventure when you prepare to climb the summit up. From the top, you may find the impressive beauty of Spiti Valley highly influential on your self. From the top, with the glimpses of the verdant valley, walk down to the famous Pare Chu River and from there, you will move enthusiastically toward Dak Karzong. As you continue the trek, you will come to conquer the flat paths reaching up to Racholamo Valley and from then onward, there will be easy downhill ways to reach Norbu Sumdo. You will get to cross a river beyond Norbu Sumdo to reach Chumik Shilde.

Tso Moriri Lake and a walk across the banks of it would be the most extravagant highlight of this trek. Then you will visit the beautiful old, Korzok Monastery too before you wind up the undeniable trails of Parang La. About the Parang La Pass:

The Parang La Pass Trek that passes to the scenic valleys of Ladakh, is one of the most popular trekking trails in the Ladakh-Spiti valley. Offering astounding views of the towering mountains and the snow-clad peaks. Though scenic all the ways, the Parang La trek originates from the Kara hamlet and continues till Karkoza. It starts gaining altitude as it makes its way through Spiti Valley and finally takes the trekkers to the Tso Moriri Lake. 

This amazing trek takes you through the journey of some of the most amazing sights. Pass through the high altitude village popular for spotting of the highly enigmatic and elusive snow leopard and then slowly take some steep turns. Start on your exciting adventure, from the enigmatic village of Kibber, which is famed for its elusive snow leopard population.

Parang La Trek Itinerary

Day 1
Kaza to Ki | Ki to Dumla (18 km approx./ 4 hours)
  • Arrive in Kaza, make yourself comfortable by exploring the town and get acclimatized. Kaza is the administrative centre of the Spiti Valley.
  • After getting used to the conditions, begin the experience by first driving from Kaza to the small village of Kibber.
  • Kibber is situated at a great height of about 14000 feet above sea level, and it is among the highest human settlements in the world.
  • Near the village is the famous Ki Monastery – a 11th century Buddhist site – famous for its architecture, wall paintings and images of Lord Buddha.
  • Later, commence the first phase of the Parang La trek and move towards Dumla.
  • It is a short hike but you need to be cautious due to the slightly rough terrain of the Lahaul and Spiti region.
  • Cross several deep and narrow river gorges on the way to Dumla, and on reaching your destination travel to the campsite for an overnight stay.
Day 2
Dumla to Thaltak Meadow (14990 feet approx./ 3-4 hours)
  • Walk down the mountainous slopes while completing this stretch of the Parang La trekking expedition and reach the base portion of a narrow gorge.
  • After completing the descent, conquer the climbs towards the meadow of Thaltak.
  • As you reach the altitude, pitch your tents and enjoy a peaceful camping.
Day 3
Thaltak Meadow to Jagtha | Jagtha to Bongrojen (16780 feet approx./ 7 hours)
  • In the morning, start off with the long and demanding phase of the trek to Parang La by walking for around 8 km towards Jagtha and then further towards Bongrojen.
  • On the way, come down the slopes towards the floor of a river and then follow it upstream.
  • En route Bongrojen, walk through hordes of small and big rocks, scattered on the track.
  • On arrival in Bongrojen, transfer to the campsite for a night stay.
Day 4
Bongrojen to Parang La (18290 feet) | Parang La to Dak Karzong (16200 feet approx./ 5 hours)
  • One of the main stretches of Parang La will take you to the summit of the mountain pass itself.
  • Have a hot cup of tea and breakfast before you start the trek.
  • Gain elevation gradually while ascending to the top of the pass.
  • On reaching the pass summit, look at the bewitching views of the Spiti Valley, and then start descending towards the Pare Chu River.
  • Post the successful completion of the trails, tread on flat plains on the way to Dak Karzong.
  • It is a small, flat and barren valley surrounded by high mountains on all sides.
  • Upon reaching the site, travel to the camp and rest.
Day 5
Dak Karzong to Datang Yongma (15500 feet approx./ 5 hours)
  • Head upstream along the Pare Chu River, and walk through numerous minor mountain rivers.
  • On reaching Datang Yongma, set up camps and retire for the day.
Day 6
Datang Yongma to Chumik Shilde (14869 feet approx./ 5-6 hours)
  • As you proceed with the Parang La trek, you would be hiking early morning along the easy and almost-flat path up to the Racholamo Valley.
  • From here, the track comes downhill considerably, passing by the grounds of Norbu Sumdo, which used to be the meeting place of Ladakhi monarchs.
  • Cross a river beyond Norbu Sumdo on the way to Chumik Shilde.
  • On reaching the destination, travel to the camps for an overnight stay.
Day 7
Chumik Shilde to Tso Moriri (15075 feet approx./ 5 hours)
  • This section of the Parang La trekking would be there in your heart forever due to the presence of extremely beautiful scenery on the way.
  • Tread on flat and vast plains to reach Tso Moriri – a mesmerising glacial lake at an altitude of approximately 15075 feet.
  • On the way, if you are lucky, you will spot some Tibetan wild asses and around the lake, hordes of migratory birds.
  • Upon arriving at this heavenly place, take a look around and plunge into the cold water if you dare!
  • Click loads of photographs and walk around the lake to explore the area more. Later, transfer the camps for an overnight stay.
Day 8
Tso Moriri to Korzok (14850 feet/ 6-7 hours)
  • Begin the wonderful part of the Parang La trek by walking along the shores of Tso Moriri.
  • It is a widely accepted spot to click hundreds of pictures of the snow-clad peaks of the Ladakh Mountain Range.
  • As you reach the Korzok Village, avail an optional visit to Korzok Monastery, which houses statues and intricate wall paintings of numerous Buddhist deities.
  • Following which, you will be transferred to your lodging to rest at night.
Day 9
Korzok to Leh (211 km approx./ 5 hours)
  • Travel from Korzok to Leh by road in order to end the trek to Parang La.
  • Choose to explore the town or travel further to Srinagar or Manali to board a flight to Delhi.

Know Before You Go for Parang La Trek

  • Climatic conditions in the high altitudes vary from the plains; take adequate time to get acclimatized to high altitudes.
  • The management reserves all the right to modify the trek during any emergencies or natural calamities.
  • Consult a physician before undertaking the trek. Carry basic medications and a first-aid kit during the trek.
  • Pay heed to the trek guides and instructors in order to enjoy a safe and sound trek.
  • The trek takes place through an eco-friendly zone; do not encourage littering the local sites or campsites. Travelers littering may be fined.
  • Water is very precious, so conservation is appreciated.
  • Do not encourage trekking during the night unless it is a part of the itinerary and a guide is with you; this might lead to unforeseen mishaps.
  • Avoid using earphones during the trek; this might hinder your audibility.
  • Avoid using plastic bags and maintain the ecological balance of the destinations.
  • In case, the trek needs to be canceled, the authorities should be informed beforehand.

  • Camping is very basic in nature. One must not expect luxuries. Electricity may be available only at a few locations.
  • Mobile & laptop charging points may/may not be available on campsites at a common point.
  • Any personal expenses, items of personal nature, meals not mentioned, etc. will not be in part of the package.
  • Carry dry snacks/food from home (you will save a lot of money). Carry water bottles with you, so that you can refill.
  • Keep your luggage minimum; the more you carry, the more you hassle.
  • It is recommended to carry enough warm clothes and the right kind of shoes for the Parang La trek.
  • Children below the age of 7 years are not recommended for the trek.
