How to reach Kathgodam:

Kathgodam is well-connected to tourist destinations in Uttarakhand. It’s about 24 km from Nainital and can be reached by air, road, and rail.

Air: Kathgodam does not have its own airport. However, Pantnagar Airport is located just 32 km away. Flights are available from Delhi.

Road: Bus services are available from major cities of the country to Kathgodam. However, the easiest way to get here by road is to catch a bus from Delhi. It takes approximately 5 hours and 40 minutes via NH9.

Rail: Kathgodam has its own railway station known as Kathgodam Railway Station. It’s connected to cities like Dehradun, Delhi, Lucknow, Kolkata, and Kanpur.

Nanda Devi Trek Itinerary

Day 1
Drive from Kathgodam to Munsiyari (2,290m) (277km – 8 Hours by Road)
  • Highlights: Kumaon Countryside, Chaukori Tea Gardens, Acclimatization
  • Details: After your arrival at Kathgodam railway station, take a drive through the country roads and the stunning Kumaon Himalayas.
  • Pass through the lovely township of Almora and obtain necessary permits for the Nanda Devi East Base Camp Trek.
  • Drive to Chaukori, a small hamlet famous for its tea gardens established by the British.
  • From here the spectacular 175 deg view of the snow-clad Nanda Devi, Trishul, Panchchuli, Nandakot, and Maiktoli peaks are phenomenal.
  • Reach Munsiyari after a short halt at Chaukori and check-in into a guesthouse.
  • The rest of the day will be vested to get acclimatized to the high altitude climate; overnight stay in the guesthouse.
Day 2
Trek from Munsiyari to Milam Village (1,850m)
  • Highlights: 7km Trek, Local Life in Milam
  • Details: After breakfast in the guesthouse, prepare for your first trekking episode in the region!
  • Pass through the bustling marketplace as the trail leads onto an open path.
  • A fairly easy walk for about 4-5hrs with steady descent takes you to Milam, the winter home of the local villagers.
  • Spend the day learning about the traditional migration of the villagers during summer months, their cultures, traditions, and cuisine; overnight stay will be in Milam.
Day 3
Trek from Milam to Bogudiar (2,609m)
  • Highlights: 12km Trek, Confluence of Poting & Gori Ganga Rivers
  • Details: Although a long-distance one, today’s trail will take you through a dense forest of Utis trees, which is common to the sub-tropical Himalayas.
  • Stop by at the meeting point of the Ralam rivulet and the Gori Ganga. Follow a steep uphill ascent to reach Bogudiar village as the sun almost sets.
  • The confluence of Poting and Gori Ganga Rivers at this location is the Day highlight; overnight stay at Bogudiar.
Day 4
Trek from Bogudiar to Railkot (3,130m)
  • Highlights: 12km Trek, Stunning Trans Himalayas, Nanda Kot Glacier, Railkot Ruins
  • Details: Today’s 12km trek takes you through the true panorama of the Trans Himalayan region.
  • Experience the natural beauty of this landscape as the route takes a detour around Laspa Village.
  • Further north is the popular trekking trail to Pindari Glacier lying between the Nanda Devi and the Nanda Kot ranges.
  • Arrive at Railkot Village situated above the Alaknanda River and get into the tents by the riverside.
  • Spend the daylight hours exploring ruins around Railkot and return back to the tents for an overnight stay.
Day 5
Trek from Railkot to Ghanghar (3,300m)
  • Highlights: 13km Trek, Pachu Valley, Alpine meadows, Jauhar houses
  • Details: Begin the day with a delicious breakfast and follow the typical landscape of the Trans Himalayan region.
  • Walk through sunny meadows as the crisp mountain air accompany you all the way to the ancient Ghanghar village.
  • Enter the Pachu Valley territory that will lead to the final destination of Nanda Devi Base Camp in the Ghanghar village; situated at an altitude of 3,300m, this exciting village is where the Johar tribe set up their winter homes.
  • You can also embark on a short local exploration tour and spend overnight in the hamlet.
Day 6
Trek from Ghanghar to Pachu Glacier (4,000m)
  • Highlights: 7km Trek, Stunning Nanda Devi, Rhododendron Forests, Pachu Glacier
  • Details: After breakfast in the Ghanghar camp, begin on a trail that will take around 5 hours and will take you to the Pachu Glacier.
  • The highlight of today is the stunning view of the Nanda Devi peak, which keeps getting clearer and stronger with every step you take towards the Pachu Glacier.
  • Pass through rolling high-altitude forests of rhododendrons along the way.
  • Coupled with fresh green birch forests, pink and white exotic flowers, this stretch of the trek is truly magnificent; overnight stays will be in tents.
Day 7
Exploration day at Nanda Devi Base Camp
  • Highlights: Nanda Devi Peak, Scenic Beauty, Local Exploration
  • Details: Waking up in the morning, get refreshed and energized with a breakfast.
  • Today will be dedicated to exploring the vicinity and getting close to the fascinating Nanda Devi Peak.
  • Spend the entire day exploring and discovering the magical beauty around and call it a day before you settle down in the camp.
Day 8
Trek to Pachu Glacier to Martoli
  • Highlights: 17km Trek, Ancient Indo-Tibetan Trade Route, Village Life
  • Details: Begin the day with a down trek towards the ancient trade route along the Indo-Tibet border.
  • Following the trail, arrive in Martoli, a scenic village jotted with rustic houses with exquisite wooden carvings.
  • Enjoy the fascinating views of Nanda Devi and Nanda Kot from the village followed by an overnight stay in one of the local houses.
Day 9
Trek from Martoli to Rargari
  • Highlights: 20km Trek, Easy & Downhill Trek
  • Details: Today’s downhill trek will be an easier one and on the way, you can enjoy the pristine nature and the surreal beauty of the pictorial valleys and mountains.
  • Arriving in Rargari, check in into a local hut and retire for the day.
Day 10
Trek from Rargari to Munsyari
  • Highlights: 14km Trek, Jeep Ride
  • Details: Starting with today’s trek, you will arrive at Chaukori after traversing around 14km.
  • From Chaukori, an enthralling jeep ride will take you further to Munsyari, where you will be spending overnight in a guesthouse/tent.
Day 11
Drive from Munsyari to Kathgodam (296km – 10 Hours by Road)
  • Highlights: Jeep Ride, Tour Ends Here
  • Details: Today morning, after having breakfast in the guesthouse/tent, pack your bags and get ready to depart Munsyari.
  • Here onwards, a jeep ride through the captivating mountains, picturesque valleys, and winding terrains will take you to Kathgodam.
  • Arriving at the destination, take an overnight train to Delhi and mark the end of this amazing Nanda Devi East Base Camp Trek.
