Well, its difficult for a first timer considering both the skiing and trek. I loved the trekking more than skiing, no doubt skiing is fun but I think for a first timer it is kinds tough to balance. Trekking through snow blanket was something that made my day.

What a place is Kedarkantha. I was surprised to watch the place and the serenity. It was snow everywhere and saw many people doing skiing there. I was not prepared to do that much adventure. Hence tried the trekking trip to the top of the snow-covered peaks. It was overwhelming. We started the trip from Delhi in a tempo traveler. I and my family, my cousins, and three friends were in the group. Everyone was really excited. From Dehradun, the tour provider was also there with us. Food was from the hotels and shops we saw on the roads and accommodation was in the hotels which the tour organizer had business with. At two places we did camping. That was the best camping experience. The snow cover was thick but the tents were of good quality so that the chilling atmosphere was away from entering the tents. Blankets, extra bed sheets, jackets and sweaters. Oh my god, we looked like Eskimo. Skking was something really amazing to watch. A lot of people were there doing skiing on the thick cover of snow. We were not prepared for the activity. Still we had the heart to do that adventure. But we kept it for some other time. Yamuna and Tons Rivers were seen in the beginning of the trip towards Sankri. Those rivers were flowing so beautifully as the pine forests on their shores were standing as the protectors. All the mountains peaks we reached were standing tall with their heads high and the views from the top were amazing. We waited for a long time to see sunrise. But due to the heavy fog in the morning, sunrise was not so good to watch. But sunrise from the riverside was really amazing. It was the best photograph among the photos I clicked. A picture perfect place is Kedarkantha and I think everyone should plan at least a short trip to this marvelous site.

One of the most beautiful treks I have ever done is Kedarkantha trek in Uttarakhand. I went there with a group of 4 people. My cousins and I. That was the best time I had. The camping we have done during the trekking trip was the major factor which made the trip extremely adventurous. The serenity and the beauty of the place were unimaginable. Most of the routes were going through forest ranges and some of them were filled with bushes and tall trees. Small villages came up in between with small huts and some kids playing in front of their houses. That was an eye catching visual. The whole trip was delayed for hours because of the rain happened at regular intervals. I was getting frustrated then. But when we reached the Kedarkantha, I was really stunned. The tall mountain peaks were arranging some amazing sights for us and we saw the Yamunotri and Gangotri ranges. Very peaceful location. The organizers arranged beautiful camp sets at the base points. The tents were of good quality and the sleeping beds were also of good quality. Since it was raining, the cold atmosphere was there all the time. But it did not kill the fun of the trip. Campfire was not there since every evening, it was drizzling. We missed the fun hidden in that. Otherwise, the trek and the walking around the place was admirable. I am not exaggerating but telling the truth. Kedarkantha is a joyous place for family trips and adventure special activities. I want to try skiing on the snow next time.

You can also take a shared cab or a jeep which leaves at 8 AM. The ticket costs Rs. 600 for this ride and you can find them opposite the Grand Hotel near Prince Chowk, at the taxi stand. Another way is to hire a Sumo car which can be arranged for about Rs. 6000.

    10. What is the temperature like during Kedarkantha Trek?

The temperature during the Kedarnath trek depends upon the time when you visit it. The best time to visit is from May to October and the temperature varies this way – • May: Weather stays moderately cold. The minimum temperature is 5 degrees and the maximum is 14 degrees usually at this time. The roads are clear during this month and pilgrims as well as trekkers visit. • June-July: The temperature varies between 18 (max) to 10 (min) degrees Celsius. June is partly clouded while July has mild showers. Jul y is the warmest month but is also dangerous because of monsoon and landslides. • September-October: This is yet another favorable time period. The temperature stays between 15 degrees Celsius (max) and 8 degrees Celsius (min) at this time. But sometimes in October, the roads are closed due to snowfall. Rainfall is uncommon during September and the natural flora and fauna flourish during this time.

    11. How much distance will we cover each day?

There are new trek routes to Kedarnath. First of all, you will have to come from Dehradun to Sankri which takes about 7 to 8 hours and is 2000m. On the second day you will go from Sankri to Judaa Ka Talaab (2700m) and from there to Shepherd Camp – another 200m. The third day you go from 2900 m to 3400 m (Kedarnath Base camp). On the fourth day, you trek from the Base camp to Kedarnath – another 400m. On day five you come back from the base camp to Sankri – 2000. So, on the entirety, you are climbing down the most on the fifth day. Right from 3800m to 2000m. On the other days, you are only traveling 300m on an average.

    12. What medicines should I carry?

If you require medicines then you should carry medicines. This means that if you are on prescribed medicines then only you need to carry additional medicines. In the travel package, you will have first aid kid. But you should carry one, just for safety. You should consider taking sunscreen, topical antibiotic creams, bandages and blister kits. Carry an Ibuprofen or Advil for acting as anti-inflammatory agents. Afrin is important to carry because those who are prone to bronchitis might have a clogged nose in the higher altitudes.

    13. What sort of fitness is expected from trekkers?

Trekkers should, in general, be physically fit. This means that patients of lung problems and asthma are not allowed to trek. Also, if you have a bleeding ulcer, then trekking is prohibited by doctors. But many people overlook the dental checkup before going to trek. An abscessed tooth can put an end to the journey. In general, do not over train just before the trekking expedition. Take your training to the peak only 2 to 3 weeks before. After that, just maintain the fitness level. If you try to strain yourself at the last minute you will encounter fatigue. It is dangerous because it can lead to injury.

    14. What type of vehicles will be used for transportation?

You might have to ride on mules when you reach at the higher altitude – close to your destination. From Dehradun, you can ask for a pickup ride at an extra cost and usually, a personal cab is provided to you for this ride. While coming down you are coming down on a ski ride. So there is not much of a vehicular use but you will have to go with the mountaineering habits. Later you can again take a cab or a jeep ride back home from Sankri.

    15. I am the only girl in the trek. Is it safe for me?

If you doubt whether you are safe in the trek ride then you have nothing to worry about. 30% of Indian trekkers are women and most of them come hiking alone. A tip for women travelers is to always use public transport instead of cabs and personal jeeps. If economy hotels or lodges seem dingy, you can opt for youth hostels nearby. There is a trek leader and some guides to accompany you throughout the journey. Therefore it is a lot more secure than traveling alone.

    16. What all things can we see along our way?

First of all, you will come across the Yamuna River while on your way to Sankri. At Juda Ka Talaab you will come across a small lake. This lake turns ice cold during the winters. You have to pass through a forest to reach till here. While traveling from Shepherd Camp to Kedarnath base you will come across vast snowy mountains – with green patches on them. You will find snow covered pine trees which will follow you all the way to Kinnar Kailash in the Gangotri range. Of course, the Kedarnath itself is a sight for sore eyes.
