About University of Salamanca

The University of Salamanca, founded in 1218, is Spain's oldest university and one of the oldest in Europe. Located in the historic city of Salamanca in western Spain, it was established by King Alfonso IX of León and received the royal charter of foundation in 1254 from King Alfonso X.

During the Spanish Golden Age (16th-17th centuries), the university flourished as a center of academic excellence, particularly in humanities, law, and theology. It attracted renowned scholars like Fray Luis de León and Francisco de Vitoria, who helped develop early theories of international law and human rights.

The university's architectural heritage is remarkable, featuring the ornate Plateresque façade of its main building, adorned with intricate carvings including the famous frog on a skull that students traditionally search for as a symbol of good luck. The historic Library houses over 160,000 volumes, including rare manuscripts dating back to the 11th century.

Today, the University of Salamanca remains a prestigious institution with approximately 30,000 students across eight campuses. It offers degrees in numerous disciplines and is especially renowned for its Spanish language programs that attract international students worldwide.

The university continues to balance its rich traditions with modern academic pursuits. Its influence extends beyond academics into the cultural life of Salamanca, a UNESCO World Heritage city. The university's anniversary celebrations in 2018 marked 800 years of continuous education, cementing its place as a cornerstone of European higher education and Spanish cultural identity.
