Located in the southwest, and at an elevation of 904 meters, the Jabal Ayr is one of the most historic places to visit in Medina. Mount Ayr is Medina’s second-largest mountain after Uhud and marks Medina's southern boundary. The prophet described Jabal Ayr as the Mountain of Hell.

According to the Prophet, Uhud was the mountain that loved everyone and was loved by people hence it became the “Heaven Gate”. But, Ayr was a place that hated everyone and was hated by everyone hence it became the “Hell Gate”.

The meaning of the word “Ayr” is wild ass whereas Uhud derived from the word Ahad means “one” These very names as per Muslim sages make it evident that even Men of Al Madinah belonged to two different parties, one that was friendly to the Prophet while the other that was hostile to him, hence these two separate mountains.
