Chandrashila Trek Overview
With mesmerizing summit views of Kedar, Chaukhamba, and the Himalayas, the Chandrashila trek, at an altitude of 12,083 ft. is one of the most suitable treks for beginners. A visit to the holy Tugnath temple, famous for being the highest Shiva temple in the world offers you a vantage point in the trek.
The journey to the trek takes you through Rishikesh, Sari, and Chopta, and the way is surrounded by vivacious patches of pine, oaks, and rhododendron. When here you can also indulge in bird-watching activities and lakeside picnics. Do not miss watching, the golden-breasted eagles that are a mesmerizing sight from the summit.
About the trekking experience:
- Starting from Haridwar, the journey will take you through the famous Har ki Pauri, Chopta, and Sari along with the numerous tiny hamlets as you ascend to the top.
- On your way, onlook the beauty of Kedar, Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, Bandarpunch and also the Deoria Tal lake. While on the trek, you can also meditate at the famous Tugnath temple.
- The entire distance of around 10 KM, will be covered in 4 days. An experienced guide will accompany you throughout the trek.
- You can enjoy the beautiful views of the peaks from your stay in the high-quality alpine tents or guesthouses.
- Hearty breakfast, lunch and dinner (vegetarian) are all included in the package. If you like exploring different cuisines then you try out the local Garhwali and Kumaoni delicacies in this region.
- Ensure that you stay covered with thermals and enough jackets to withstand the temperature that is between 8°C to 15°C during the day and -5°C to 3°C in the night.

How to Reach:
The Chandrashila trek starts from the base camp of Chopta in Uttarakhand. In order to reach Chopta, you need to get to the cities of Dehradun, Haridwar, or Rishikesh. From these destinations, you can get to Chopta by bus, car, and taxi.
By Air- The nearest major airport to Chopta is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun. It takes around 4-8 hours to reach Dehradun by air from most metropolitan cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Jaipur and Mumbai. The total time taken is dependent upon the distance between the two destinations, as well as the number and duration of layovers. From Dehradun you can reach Chopta by car or taxi, covering around 198 kilometres in 6 hours.
By Train- Reaching Chopta by rail is easy, you can get a direct train to Haridwar from all major cities like Lucknow, Kolkata, Jaipur, and Amritsar. The major trains that take you to Haridwar are Yoga Express, Doon Express, Jan Shatabdi Express, and Upasana Express. It takes around 5.5 hours to reach Chopta from Haridwar, covering approximately 187 kilometres easily via a taxi or a car.
By Bus- You can reach Rishikesh via a bus from Delhi, Jaipur, Saharanpur, Amritsar, and other nearby cities. Himachal Road Transportation Corporation and Uttarakhand Transport Corporation offer daily buses to these destinations alongside private bus services. Upon reaching Rishikesh, you can take a direct cab or hire a taxi to reach Chopta, covering 161 kilometres in 5 hours.
By Road- It is very feasible to reach Chopta directly via car from all nearby cities. You can marvel at the beauty of Uttarakhand en-route, and have a great road trip curving your way up the mountains. The major highways that you can avail of are NH 58 and NH 72A.

Know Before You Go for Chandrashila Trek
- Persons travelling from the states namely; Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab. Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Rajasthan by road, air and train to Uttarakhand are advised to carry negative RT-PCR test reports (test should be done 72 hours prior to the time of arrival to Uttarakhand state).
- Climatic conditions in the high altitudes vary from the plains; take adequate time to get acclimatized to high altitudes.
- The management reserves all the right to modify the trek during any emergencies or natural calamities.
- Consult a physician before undertaking the trek. Carry basic medications and a first-aid kit during the trek.
- It is recommended to carry enough warm clothes and the right kind of shoes for the trek.
- Pay heed to the trek guides and instructors in order to enjoy a safe and sound trek.
- Avoid consumption of alcohol or any other intoxicants during the trek.
- The trek takes place through an eco-friendly zone; do not encourage littering the local sites or campsites. Travelers littering may be fined.
- Water is very precious, so conservation is appreciated.
- Do not encourage trekking during the night unless it is a part of the itinerary and a guide is with you; this might lead to unforeseen mishaps.
- Avoid using earphones during the trek; this might hinder your audibility.
- Avoid using plastic bags and maintain the ecological balance of the destinations.
- Guidelines issued by the State-Government are to be followed. Social distancing to be maintained. Frequent hand sanitization and use of mask is recommended.

- Carry dry snacks/food from home (you will save a lot of money). Carry water bottles with you, so that you can refill.
- Keep your luggage minimum; the more you carry, the more you hassle.
- Children below the age of 7 years are not recommended for this trek.
