Framed by mountains on all its sides the tiny village of Leh is a gem nestled in the laps of the mighty Himalayas. A land of extremes, the land boasts of a rich cultural heritage blessed by the lamas and yet hides in its arms, landscapes that are almost untouched in their wilderness.

Considered as one the most challenging cycling trails in the world, the Manali Leh cycling trip is truly a call for adrenaline junkies! Endowed in stunning treasures of nature, this route makes for an extreme adventure quest for the cyclists.

The Manali to Leh cycling tour takes you through the lush alpine forests of Manali, picturesque villages of Lahaul, past the vast planes of Sarchu and into the colourful and rich Leh. On the way you, challenge yourself to cross the treacherous 21 zigzag Gata Loops up the canyon wall. You will overcome the mighty Khardung La Pass, the highest motorable pass in the world that rises up to 5,600m. From the pass, enjoy panoramic views of the Indus Valley Civilisation in the south to Zanskar Valley in the north right up the enormous slopes of Saser Massif.

Itinerary

  • Day 1 -

    Arrive in Manali.

    Arrive in Manali and take in all its beautiful and idyllic locales on a local sightseeing tour. Let the lush forests and the towering mountains of the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal ranges awe you with their beauty and take in the snowy peaks that you will soon conquer on your bikes. Overnight stay in Manali.

  • Day 2 -

    Manali – Marhi

    As you begin with the first leg of this cycling journey today, warm up by pedaling out of Manali through its meadows towards the gushing waterfalls of the valley. Fill your gaze with the unique apple orchards and quaint and colorful hamlets on the way. Thereafter, you will witness many hairpin curves and switchbacks of undulating roads towards the Rohtang Pass; also called the pass of soul, for an overnight stay.

  • Day 3 -

    Marhi – Sissu

    Continuing your ascent over the Rohtang Pass for 12km at 3,900m you can see awesome views of snowy peaks. Thereafter, you will be descending towards Gramphu to meet the roaring currents of the Chandra River at Khoksar. Cycling for the day ends at the Sissu campsite. After some rejuvenating cups of chai and hot pakoras in the evening, you can take a leisure walk towards to picturesque Sissu Falls followed by an overnight stay.

  • Day 4 -

    Sissu – Jispa

    Today, you will be setting off on a short ride to Gondla. Passing through the natural mountain streams that flow through the region, you will reach the rough terrains of Keylong Pass. You will slowly start noticing that as you go along, the terrains start becoming drearier; the trail for the day ends in Jispa with an overnight stay.

  • Day 5 -

    Jispa - Zing Zing Bar

    After leaving Jispa through a gorge, ride downhill towards the Darcha settlement, which is a small hamlet nestled at the confluence point of Barai Nulla and Bhaga rivers. Hereafter, ascend towards Patseo, where you start getting a sense of the remoteness of the area with just few settlements dotting the landscapes. Finally, you will enter the ‘Land of the Lamas’ and experience the dry and windswept climate of the region. Going onwards, park your bikes and selves at the Zing Zing Bar which is the base of Baralacha La Pass followed by an overnight stay.

  • Day 6 -

    Padseo – Sarchu

    A relatively tough day of riding awaits you as you begin our ascent over the Baralacha La Pass standing at a staggering 4,810m. However, your efforts are rewarded in full and some more with the sight of the unadulterated raw wilderness of the barren Trans Himalayan region. After a short stop for tea at Bharatpur, you will cross the mountains to reach Sarchu, the destination for the day. Witness the magnificent vista of the sunset from campsite, where you will be staying for the night.

  • Day 7 -

    Sarchu – Whiskey Nulla

    Initiating the day with some easy cycling, you will soon reach the challenging terrains of the 21 loops of Gata. Hot chai and pakoras await as you finish the easy downhill descent towards Whiskey Nullah. On the way, you may witness the rare blue sheep of the region grazing at Nakeela Pass; overnight stay in tents at Whiskey Nullah.

  • Day 8 -

    Whiskey Nulla – Tso Kar Lake

    Today you can commend yourselves as you conquer the highest motorable pass on the Manali-Leh Highway known as the Lachalang La at 5,050m. The rough roads with gravel and lack of tarmac require the toughest of manoeuvres to travel. Hereafter, you will be descending towards Pang and then go on to 8km switchback climb to reach the flat Moray Plains. The region is mostly uninhabited save for the Nomadic Changpas who dot the landscape with their makeshift settlements. The day ends at the shores of the Tso Kar salt lake with an overnight camping.

    Total distance covered is 75 kms.

  • Day 9 -

    Tso Kar Lake – Lato

    From highest to the second highest, you traverse the challenges posed by the Tanglang La Pass (5,260m). After a tough day of cycling, you will feel a sense of accomplishment once you reach your destination on the top. Feel the wind in your hair as you begin your descent of 1,200m to reach the village of Rumetse. Small settlements crop up hereon and the air gets significantly warmer as you reach the end of your trail for the day at Lato.

    Total distance covered is 68 kms.

  • Day 10 -

    Lato – Leh

    The trail for the day looks much easier as compared to the trails traversed the past two days. You will witness an almost sea change in the scenery while approaching the ancient and fertile plains of the Indus Valley civilization. Witness the grand Stupas and other marvels of this idyllic destination. The mountains surrounding you on this valley are lush and their palette is rich with multiple hues. On the way, you will be passing the Shey Palace, from where the road improves to a great extent. Witness the famous Thiksey Monastery and feel blessed in its divinity before you end the day in Leh, which is the penultimate destination of this journey.

  • Day 11 -

    In Leh

    Today, give yourselves the much needed rest by spending the day getting soaked in the wonders of this beautiful city. Being a popular destination, Leh has a number of cafes, book and souvenir shops. Blessed with a rich culture and history, Leh gives you the chance to marvel at the Leh Palace, the Sakar Gompa monastery and the Shanti Stupa.

  • Day 12 -

    Leh – Khardungla and return to Leh.

    As you set off on your journey today, you will test the limits of your own endurance and energy while conquering the giant Khardung La pass that stands at a menacing height of 5,600m! Upon reaching the top, marvel at magnificent views of the nature that stretches from the Indus Valley in the south right up to the massive mountains of the Zanskar Range to awe inspiring slopes of Saser Massif in the north. Applaud yourself on this massive achievement as you will be beginning your descent back to Leh and mark the end of this exciting Manali to Leh cycling tour.
