This was an ultimate experience for me so far. Trust me, you can encounter the nature at its best form in this trek. As per the trek difficulties are concerned, they were not so tough and was easily manageable. A good and ideal trek to take.

The feel of the Chopta Tungnath Chandrashila trek was really amazing. We were a group of few beginners and the trek got completed in an exciting way. We as beginners did faced a bit of challenges but I think, if you already have experience in trekking this is the trek you should go for.

Overview

About the Destination:

The excitement and allurement of the Chopta Tungnath Chandrashila Trek starts right from the beginning. The occasionally steep climbs will not feel like uphill tasks as you walk through jungle trails surrounded by oak and birch trees, or, through verdant meadows filled with rhododendrons. The placid beauty of the place is punctuated by the chirping of birds, the soft laughter of a brook as it rolls over stones on the way and the whispering wind. The view of snow-capped mountain peaks against the backdrop of the beautiful Devariyatal or the breathtaking Chopta valley is an excellent ingredient for a perfect trekking experience. A walk through nature gives you ample opportunities to soak in the different moods of nature as they unravel at every step.

About the Departure:

A perfect blend of excitement, allurement, amazement culminating in ultimate admiration is what summarises the Chopta Tungnath Chandrashila trek. The first part of the trek is through a jungle of conifer trees, rhododendrons and ferns. The tall pine trees give you glimpses of snow capped peaks which can be clearly viewed from the emerald lake of Devariyatal. The forest gradually recedes and opens up to the spectacular Chopta valley. Explore the place before proceeding towards a tryst with another divine experience at Tungnath and Chandrashilla Top. The Top offers an all round view of some well-known peaks and many not so known that blend in layers of blue ranges. The trek is rough at times but not difficult at all. Enjoy the camping experience as you stay amidst nature experiencing its smell, sights and sounds to the fullest.

Temperature Range: March to May: 100 – 300C, November to March: 150C.

Itinerary

  • Day 1 -

Drive from Rishikesh to Sari (7-8 Hours), Trek from Sari to Devariyatal (2,400m)

The journey begins with an early evening drive from Rishikesh to Sari, a small village which serves as a base of this trek. The road till here leads through Rudraprayag where River Alakananda meets River Mandakini; enjoy packed lunch on the way. On reaching Sari, you start on an uphill trail that takes you through forests to Devariyatal. Arriving at the campsite, settle down in a camp by the lakeside. The tranquil beauty of the lake that reflects the Chaukhamba peak will wash away the travel fatigue.

  • Day 2 -

Trek from Devariyatal to Chopta (3,000m)

Start on the trek through dense forest of oak, pine and birch frequently punctuated by bright red rhododendron flowers. The trail goes along a ridge to Tali from where the track goes downhill across streams and brooks to reach Chopta.

Nestled in the lap of a lush green valley Chopta is called ‘mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand’ for no wrong reason. With its pristine natural beauty still unspoilt, the place offers amazing view of the mighty Himalaya. Settle down in the camp and freshen up; you can go on short cycle trips to explore the place; overnight stay in the camp.

  • Day 3 -

Chopta To Tungnath Trek (3,680m) – Chandrashilla Top (4,130m) – Chopta

After an early breakfast, start with Chopta to Tungnath trek. Throughout the trail you will find iron fences for support that are a blessing during winter treks. While the initial trek is a little steep, the last part of the trek will be relatively flat. Arriving at the Tungnath Temple, witness and explore the sacredness of it and continue trekking towards Chandrashilla Top.

Here onwards, the ascend will be a steeper one and will take around 1 horu. The peak offers a 360-degree view of the mountain peaks like Trishul, Chaukhamba and Kedar peak. Enjoy the magical views from the top and start trekking back Chopta.

  • Day 4 -

Trek from Chopta to Pothibasa, Drive from Pothibasa to Haridwar (180km – 4 Hours by Road)

Start the day early as you advance towards Pothibasa; trek back through the lovely meadows and oak forests for about 6km. Hereafter, this amazing Chopta Tungnath Chandrashila trekking tour will come to an end with your transfer from Pothibasa to Haridwar.

Nothing can be more pleasant than walking on tiny trails in hills, trust me guys, even 4-5 hours of walk is just nothing when you are getting so much in return.

Throughout my trip to Chopta Tungnath Chandrashila, I was reminded of the nature poems that I read in schools. There is a huge difference in watching these hills on a computer screen and watching through your eyes…I’m lucky I not only saw them but lived every moment of my trip.

It’s good that some places are inaccessible to humans…coz that’s what adds more to its beauty.
