About Volcano Hekla

It has erupted over 20 times in the past 1000 years since 874 and last erupted for 11 days in the year 2000. The volcano is a part of the mountain ridge which is around 40 km long and 1491 m above sea level. It resembles an overturned boat and has a 5.5 km long fissure called Heklugjá.

By Bus: Take a bus to Þjóðskjalasafnið station which is 258 m away from the destination. You can reach the location from the bus station with a 4-minute walk.

By Foot: You can take a hike to Mount Hekla from the nearest accessible point and it will take you 3-4 hours, depending on the trail you choose and the point you start from.

Volcano Hekla is truly a year-round Icelandic destination, and you can choose to visit at any time of the year. However, the best time to experience this remarkable site is during the summer months from June to August, when the weather is milder and the days are longer, making it more comfortable for hiking. Additionally, visiting on weekdays, from Monday to Friday, is advisable, as the area tends to be less crowded during these days. Furthermore, early morning or late afternoon are often the best times of day to visit Mount Hekla, allowing for a more serene experience.
