Kushalgarh Fort Trek Overview

Trip Location: Indore

Location: Indore, Madhya Pradesh

Kushalgarh Fort Trek is about 50 km from Indore and is situated on the hill opposite Kalakund village on the Mhow Khandwa railway line. The main gate and surrounding walls of the fort spread across eight acres are still standing somewhat intact but the magnificent Darbar hall and other halls have almost turned into a heap of stones. Piles of stone slabs, limestone, boulders, and other material are strewn everywhere in the fort, and workers of the Bhopal based firm that have been given the contract for the renovation are working towards its complete restoration.

The parapet wall of the fort has mostly been repaired and now the staircases all around are being repaired. The entrance gate and the outer walls near it were also badly damaged and they have also been repaired. SN Raj, an ASI official said the inner walls and roof will also be repaired and flower saplings will be planted in the lawn as it used to be when it was functional under Ahilya Bai Holkar rule.

The fort is unique as it has one entrance and is surrounded by bastions on all four sides. The guards had to take care of only two sides as there is a very deep valley on one side while Dhajara hill (considered to be the highest mountain in Malwa area) is on the other side. Tourists can reach the fort via two routes. One is through the side of the Choral dam on Badi Jaam road while the other is Kodariya- Patalpani road.

NOTE: Variant 2 is available on weekends only or if you want to avail variant 2 on weekdays you have to book a minimum for 15 pax.

Kushalgarh Fort Trek Itinerary

  • Day 1 - Kushalgarh Fort Trek

    You will be reporting at the mardana bhicholi R9 horse riding club in Indore for a short briefing about the trek.

    The transport will then begin driving you towards the Kalakund.

    The tour will stop at a small restaurant for breakfast and tea before proceeding further.

    You will keep driving until you reach the base of the trek. After a small session of roll calls and a briefing on the Do's and Dont's of the trek, the downhill trek will begin.

    You will arrive at the Kalakund Kushalgarh fort and take in the scenic views of the land gifted by the beauty of a stream flowing through crevices in rocks covered in greenery. Take a moment to pose for some of the most amazing pictures ever before taking your lunch and beginning the return trek.

    Trek uphill to reach the vehicle and begin the ride back home.

    Take a small tea break at a restaurant on the way.

    The experience comes to an end as you arrive back in Indore at the beginning point.
